RIPOFF, RIPOFF, RIPOFF PS I have provided a link below which should take you to photos, and a couple of videos, of the $3800 “job” Bluegrass Carpentry did for/on me. This was the single biggest ripoff I have experienced in my 68-year-old life. I paid $3800 for the proprietor and his son-in-law to spend a total of 12 hours on site, spread over two days, supplying a minimum amount of material, probably around $200 or so. (If the links work, you can look at the pictures and judge for yourself.) Of course they had to load scaffolding and ladders on their truck; they had to drive 12 miles out of town to my farm; and they had to get out of bed in the morning, get dressed, and brush their teeth. Even if you add 5 hours for loading and driving, this works out to over $200 an hour, divided between two people. $2500 was for replacing broken and badly cracked batten and nailing down loose batten strips. I expected to get a lot more work for that than I did. Only about five batten strips were replaced completely, and another 20-25 pieces ranging from 1 to 3 ft. in length were supplied. The existing rough-cut oak was replaced with pressure-treated pine; I now know it wouldn’t have been that difficult to obtain oak strips that would have gone better with what was already there. Even that work was sometimes done sloppily. If you are able to look at the pictures (and two short videos), you will see one piece of new batten that isn’t even nailed down good, and another old piece of batten that should definitely have been replaced. And I haven’t even gotten on ladders yet to go around the whole house. My house was built without a dryer vent to the outside; I had been using a water trap for the lint. So he gave me an estimate of $500 for installing some sort of vent to the outside. What he ended up doing was installing a piece of CFC across the basement window and putting a vent through that. He did supply a new dryer hose, wow! My deck has major problems; I probably need a completely new deck. Because lumber was so expensive, I had expected to wait, but he convinced me the deck would blow down if he didn’t supply some bracing. You can see what little I got for the $800. The $800 and $2500 are probably a complete waste; I will probably end up replacing the deck altogether and probably end up getting someone else to redo his batten job. The first time we used Bluegrass Carpentry was for major structural repair and floor leveling. ($30,000.00) We found this company to be honest and VERY professional. It was completed without us having to close our Day Care, and safety was a crucial detail. We used them at least twice since. We have been more than satisfied with their performance.
