The two painters who did our job were punctual as well as cheerful, and the paint job was good, although not up to our rather picky standards. It's a good thing we were here for the work, as the wrong ceiling paint was brought, and we caught that error in time. After the job was completed, we had to clean paint drips and overspray off areas of baseboard where the drop cloths were not kept carefully in place. There were numerous areas to be redone: paint roller fuzz painted onto the walls that had to be picked off and touched up, a few nail pops missed or patched poorly, and several corners where cracks were repaired with too much patch and caulk and had to be redone to make a clean corner. Overall, the painted rooms look nice, but we felt the painters were in a bit of a hurry to leave on the last day.
The wallpaper stripping in the dining room was accomplished with a lot of water sloshed around, and I had to keep an eye on my furniture to make sure it was protected - I used clothes pins to secure the drop cloths after I saw the side of the china cabinet take a direct hit from the stripping solution. (Glad I was here to dry it off!) The furnace thermostat was not covered and was soaked with stripping solution, but luckily was not damaged.
On the last day, one of the painters collected the check. We were surprised that Mr. Power never called us to make sure the work was done to our satisfaction or gain feedback on the job. Also, we had discussed with him another remodeling task which he promised to get back with us on, but that did not happen.
Over all, it was a decent job and a good value.
On many levels we are happy with the work that was done. It was completed much faster than expected and overall, it looks good. They we able to do a few extra items for us also. The hall to our bedroom had been overlooked in the quote and we had two spots that needed caulk repair next to the ceiling. They were able to take care of that for us.
However, we have some issues with their behavior and their work. When I look at the job, what we paid equates to approximately $200/hour. The day started with a 3 man crew but quickly went to two when one of them took refuge in our upstairs bathroom because he was sick. I would rather him have stayed home than be sick in our home. It should also be noted that we had other bathrooms available (other than the one a crew member was staying in) and I would have preferred that they not urinate in the yard where the children would later be sledding.
While they were working, I had to clean mud and paint out of the carpet several times and after they left I found more paint on the carpet. There is also damage to one of our new leather chairs and we found paint on the leather chairs and the couch after they left. Our black granite counter tops were completely covered with tiny dots of paint splatter that we are still scraping up.
The edges of the baseboards and cabinets also have paint on them throughout the areas they painted. They pointed out places where the previous darker color paint was on the baseboard and I gave them the okay to paint over those areas but there are many more places where that wasn't the case.
Before the crew arrived, I took all the outlet and switch plate covers off except for one on the landing above the front door. They told me that would cut in around it but instead, they just painted over the entire outlet cover; which now needs to be replaced and cut in around properly.
When I think what things might have looked like had I not spent an hour taking all the outlet and switch plate covers off, I don't think I would have been very happy.
Overall, we're happy the job is done but at the rate we paid we feel that things could have been better.
Overall very satisfied with Tim and his crew. There were some quality issues, but all of them were addressed as I pointed them out . The team was very professional always on time and followed up on everything. The pricing was very reasonable compared to the 2 other estimates I got from other Angieslist vendors (Fresh Colors and Painting the town), although Tom underestimated the time required to do an excellent job and I did pay for an additional 12 hours @ $40/hr for the extra drywall work necessary to get it looking right.
The reason for the F on responsiveness is because Tom Powers had problems with communication in the beginning causing a delay in the start. He also did not respond timely to phone calls, emails or text messages. When I communicated with Tim (team leader) we had no issues at all.
Last point. I had Tom Powers come out to give me some estimates on additional work (deck, more ceiling repair, painting kitchen and outside gutters). I told him I was going on vacation and that he can send me the estimates in two weeks (mid May). I never received the estimates. I have called him and left messages 3 times over the last 2 weeks and not one has been returned. I have called at least 5 other times with no message left, different times of the day and only get the voice mail. I have no other phone numbers. I don't know why he or anybody else has not called back. I am searching for someone else to do the other work and hope all is OK with him and his people.
This is an update on the last point. I emailed Tom one last time to try and get someone to come out and look at the drywall work in the living room, because there were cracks at the seams, where his team put in a number of screws, did the mudding and painting. He finally responded, which was the 1st communication I received in the 6 weeks after the job was completed. I have copied his words in reference to the lack of response:
and quot;Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I've taken two vacations in the past six weeks. They were a little untimely to say the least, and I've been completely swamped with calls and work. I've had to let many jobs go because there were more calls than I could return. I'm sorry I couldn't handle your request.and quot;
Obviously my additional work he was going to send me estimates on were one of the jobs he had to let go.
Also, Tom and/or his crew felt that I was and quot;particularand quot; and and quot;difficultand quot; to work for. I guess that doing the job right and to the customer specifications is considered and quot;particularand quot;.
I used the same painter, Wheatley Painting, over the last 30 years until he retired. Maybe he spoiled me by his perfection in his work and I have come to expect that from other contractors.
So based on Tom Power's attitude and his lack of communication alone, I will not use him again nor recommend him to anyone else.
The 2 men came on time, but finished late. The room looks amazing. They covered everything that needed to be covered (floor, furniture, large mirrors that weren't coming down off the wall etc.). They started on the ceiling painting it white. Then moved on to the walls, a gray we picked out, giving it 2 coats. The back wall was being painted yellow, 2 coats also. We will have to touch up on the yellow, but it's not anyones fault. The walls just sucked up the color.
The men were very polite. One man left at around 4:30 and two men returned around 5:30 to finish up at around 8pm.
I think there were supposed to be 3 men working from the get go, but one may have been sick or whatever. This is something that can't be helped by most owners of companies.
All in all, we are both thrilled with the results. You walk in the house now and it feels like our home, not this dreary builders beige home that no one wants to live in. Yuck!
We would use them again when next we need the great room painted.
We met for original estimate, and had additional meetings for fixtures and countertops. One bathroom was finished right away, and the other one, because of an issue that had to be resolved, was completed a few days later.
Tom did a follow-up call to check on my satisfation with the work.Horrible from start to finish. Read my service performed for story.
I nearly caught him red-handed in my office (they were doing exterior work) trying to steal my phone. There was proof of some smeared paint from his hand right where my phone was sitting. My phone had pictures on it from when my daughter was born, so that felt like a double blow.
Tom Powers would never admit to this or tried to make the situation right. He could have apologized or admitted wrong doing and it would have been fine.
I advise you to be careful if you hire these guys and do not let them into your house.
