"[Member Info Removed], Thank you for taking the time to provide honest feedback on your experience with the company. While it does not change the situation, the Estimator/Technician that you worked with is no longer with the company. We are however using your feedback as a teaching tool for new employees. We value our customers and strive to provide the best customer service. Unfortunately, all roofing leaks cannot be diagnosed and subsequently repaired each and every time on the very first visit. Any roofing company will disclose this. While we did replace your roof and then charge for additional chimney repairs that were NOT part of the original scope of work, we provided non-billable repairs to fix your issue. The Louisville, KY area has to date had over 51 inches of rain and we are exceeding the record by over one foot. Since the repairs were completed May 6, 2015 and you are just now providing a review- the 6 months of steady rain has not caused additional issues. We look forward to maintaining your roof to the original warranty. Again we appreciate your candid review."
The Carlon Roofing team, and Jack Carlon specifically, where a pleasure to work with. This job, while small for him, was a challenging job to tackle. Other roofing companies looked at the scope, and wouldn't touch the project. Jack came in, brought some of the key members of his team, and came up with a solution that worked. In addition, there were some constraints around finances for this job, and once we had received our funds, Jack was able to get the job done in record time.
He definitely blew away my expectations in terms of time needed to complete the job, quality of work, returning the job site (our home and yard) back to a perfect condition, and value for what we paid. My wife and I are both architects, so we probably were demanding at times.
I would highly recommend and would absolutely hire Carlon Roofing again in the future.
They didn't disappoint. Even though they were overwhelmed with jobs due to hail damage, they kept me completely informed on the scheduling of my job throughout the process. The job also involved replacement of the Gutter Helmet product with Carolon's own equivalent gutter guard.
The sales rep, Trey, is completely honest, responsive, and trustworthy. Their crews worked in 100+-degree heat to get the job done. Quality is outstanding. I couldn't be happier
Due to the recent hailstorm, I contacted Carlon along with 2 other roofing companies to quote on my roof repair. The estimator was on time for the meeting and that is where things fell apart. The estimator was unwilling to provide an estimate and seemed put off by the fact that I would not simply sign the contract and "let them handle the negotiations with the insurance company". He then went on to inform me that I was going to get "screwed" by my insurance company regardless of what they were willing to pay. Additionally he stated that the only way I was going to get a "quality" roof was to use Carlon and not by getting quotes and repairs from "storm chasers". I mentioned that I had obtained quotes from 2 other long term Louisville based companies and he said they must be using inferior materials. When I kept probing on why he wouldn't write a quote, he told me that he didn't need to as they already had 1,000 jobs booked due to the hailstorm. I then proceeded to ask him if he would have written a quote if had come a week before the hailstorm and acknowledged that yes they were writing quotes prior to the storm. The ironic thing is that he never even bothered to take a look at the roof. All he was interested in was getting the contract signed.
As you will note from my review, I didn't rate price, quality or responsiveness as it never progressed beyond the sales call.
Bottom line, I can not do business with someone that will not even write a proposal or quote for a job and then expect me to sign off and let them negotiate on my behalf without knowing what they are charging.
Updated 1/2/13
I just wanted to update my initial review of Carlon Roofing. After my review, Jack Carlon contacted me and personally came out and wrote up a detailed estimate of the work to be completed and he took the time to review some upgrades to the existing roof that would be beneficial in the long run. He also assisted with the insurance company review of the required work and caught several items the adjustor had missed. He also appoligized for the negative experience I had with their sales person. All of my dealings with Jack have been very positive and my revised rating reflect his "damage control" efforts after the initial experience. The new roof looks great and everyting has been very positive. I ultimately rated the overall experience as a "B" which was upgraded from the initial "F". If it weren't for his sales person, Carlon Roofing would have recieved an "A".
When he made the estimate he placed a ladder up the side on my home and then covered my roof with a blue tarp (even though it wasn't raining). When my insurance adjuster came the next week we looked under the tarp and saw that portions of my existing copper roof had been ripped up and taken away using that ladder that Carlon left conveniently propped beside my home. I then went over in detail what was to be done on the standing seam copper roof and told him that the insurance company asked me to retain the rest of the scrap copper (worth assumedly about $5,000+) he told me that they took it off and placed it in my garage. I walked down with him immediately to my garage and it wasn't there - he then assured me that he would "get it back" and he never did. They took this without permission and failed to ever return it.
They then began work on the new roof and did an awful job - please see pics - then when they were finishing up on the main section and I saw them starting to pack things up - I reminded them that they still has other sections to do. The workers said they knew nothing about the rest of the metal work to be done even though it was in the contract to replace all copper. So when I called Eric Reader he tells me to keep quiet about it and that his boss doesn't know anything about the extra work but he was going to get it done "on the side." I told him that I never agreed to keep quiet about it and that the work needed to be done and asked him why my new roof had such incredibly bad workmanship. He said that he would check into it and get that corrected. Of course he never did.
I then got a call from the owner Jack Carlon demanding that we paid him the remainder of the $20,800 (we had paid an initial $8000 downpayment) for the job which was only about 60 done and done very badly - see Photos. At that time I again requested that the scrap copper be returned or at least the monies they received from the scrap be applied to my bill and he claimed that it belonged to them since they removed it - I guess it is like hiring a tow truck driver to move your car and now they own it since they moved it.
We then had a face to face meeting where Eric Reader changed into an entirely different person. He did not recall any conversations we had - of course I have emails and his employees to back it up. But in the conversation Jack Carlon, who I was told was the owner came out and began to tell me what Eric and I agreed to. Now understand that Jack Carlon would have no clue what we talked about but he was certain anyway. He told me that he would do the side roof which was only a part of what was left off if I were to pay them an additional $3,000 (this roof is a metal roof about 3 ft by 8 ft). After about an hour of his threatening I told him to make me a proposal and I would consider it.
The proposal came through as I was to pay an additional $3,000 and they would partially fix the small roof - repair only the roof on the front porch (which also should have been included) and that they would only do that if I agreed to give them the other two jobs of replacing the slate and carriage house. Well of course this initial job was horrendous and I would never want them to attempt anything with my property in any shape or form and so I told them absolutely not. No matter how detailed you think their estimate is - please understand that from my experience, they will change it to their own selfish interpretation. But moreover take the time to look at and consider their work product itself. Again I have photos and you are welcome to gather as much information from me as you want - All I can say is that I would stay as far away from this company as possible - I am in the process of positing a website complete with photos - phone conversations, emails, contracts it is called X and I would be aware that they just might try to change the company's name but be very aware of Jack Carlon and Eric Reader which it comes to any type of work on your home.
