"I'm sorry, but I don't recognize your name or address as a customer of ours. Perhaps you could give more details on the job in question."
I want to start by saying that I really didn't want to have to give Mr. Bates a bad review, he is a good guy and I hate that it has come to this.
We had Mr. Bates and his guys paint our ceiling that is wood joists with exposed ductwork and mechanical equipment (wiring, plumbing, ect.) and they did a fine job on that. No real complaints there, the ductwork ran some, but that was cause it was so hot and the duct was sweating. I don't think there is much that could have been done about that without shutting the AC down, which was not really an option for us.
We also had Mr. Bates and his guys mud and tape the new walls that I had installed as well as paint the existing block walls and stain our concrete floor. This is where the problems began to pile up, and these are the reasons for the bad review.
First we will talk about the walls. There are multiple spots where the seams and corners are terrible, I cant even begin to explain how bad they look. I have pictures but I cannot figure out how to put them on here. It really bothers me because I know I could have done a better job myself, and I am not by any means a professional in that department. The reason I paid to have this done is because I wanted a better quality job than what I could have done myself and we did not get anywhere close to the quality we expected with the mudding and taping. In fact, I am currently looking for someone else to come over and fix the walls. The painting they did looks ok, but with the walls looking so terrible, it really doesn't matter how the paint looks.
The floor was what we were most upset about (until I started looking closely at the walls that is). Mr. Bates stated the floor on July 3rd and had it completely stained by the end of the day. He left for the day and I went down there to check on the floor later on to find that it was running pretty badly towards the drain. The floor has some good slope to the drain, so this is to be expected. I called Mr. Bates to let him know that this was happening and he told me he could fix it so I told him not to worry about it until the following Monday cause I didn't want him to have to come over on the 4th. There was a table down there that I told him I could help him get out, but he told me it was fine and he just put it on some paint cans and stained around it. He wasn't able to fix the runs and where the paint cans were are rings and runs coming off of them as well. The floor was our biggest worry, we really wanted it to be great and everything else would have been fine, but it too looks terrible and I am going to have someone fix it as well. When we originally started the project he told me that he had stained concrete floors before, and even during the staining process he told me that this was the hardest one he had ever done because it was so humid. Later, during a phone discussion I had with him he told me that it was the first time he had ever done it. I really wish he would have just been honest and up front with me and I would have had someone else stain the floor and it would have never been an issue.
We had originally agreed to pay Mr. Bates $2500 for all of the work, but when the floor came out the way it did I told him that we would not be able to pay him the entire amount because we now had to have someone else come in and fix it. After some lengthy discussion, we agreed to take $500 off and he would paint some doors in our hallway upstairs. In total we paid him $2000 and now we will have to spend more money to fix the floor and walls and we will have to wait even longer for our basement to be completely finished.
Again, I really hate that this review is not a great one. I would love nothing more than to have everything done and be thrilled with the work and quality, but I am not.
Overall I gave a D because I like Mr. Bates personally and they did a good job on the painting.
I gave a C for price not because I think he was expensive, but I think the quality didn't match the price paid.
I gave an F for quality for the reasons listed above.
I gave a B for responsiveness because he always responded to my calls quickly and was easy to get on the phone.
I gave a D for punctuality because even though the job got done by the date we had said it needed to be done by, I felt like we were given the impression that it would be done much sooner and in the end we were hurrying to get it ready for our party because it wasn't done sooner.
I gave a B for professionalism because even though things didn't go the way we wanted, Mr. Bates was very professional about how he handled everything. Even when I told him we would not be paying him the entire $2500, there was some arguing, but it was all handled very professionally.
I truly hope this review doesn't hurt Mr. Bates future employability and I would say that if you wanted a painter he would probably be a great hire. I just don't think it would be right for me to not write this review and not be honest with my review. A site like this only works if we are honest, no matter if we think the contractor is a good person or not.
"I would like to start off saying I'm sorry that you are dissatisfied with the job, we strive for 100% customer satisfaction. I had no idea that the drywall cured out so rough. It was only after reading this review that I became aware. As you stated, humidity in the basement was a huge factor in the finished outcome of the job, to which I previously recommended a dehumidifier. I have since offered to repair the drywall and repaint the areas in question at no charge, but you have respectfully declined my offer. The staining of the basement floor was, as you noted, not perfect due to the steep drain angle as well as the humidity problem in the basement. I did however explain that I had previously painted concrete floors, but not stained in this manner, I apologize if you assumed differently though not an excuse. I also thought that this matter had been equally agreed upon: in which you deducted $500 from the original price along with me completing additional painting work at no charge (valued at $300) to compensate you for the basement floor staining that you were dissatisfied with. Once again, I am very sorry that you were unhappy with our work and our ability to bring this matter to a favorable close for everyone."
Mr Bates and his crew arrived at the designated time, and worked efficiently and cleaned up when they were done. They gave me a summary of what they had done that day, and what was still yet to be done.
I truly liked Mr Bates, I felt that his number one priority was that we were satisfied...and we were!
Work was to be done at the location, pressure washing and painting; I was even willing to add more work to the proposal as we went along and willing to pay for the extra work.
The pressure washing was rushed and done sloppy, there was no ladder to reach high places, very rushed. When I brought its to the provider attention he said that he was not going to charge me for it and that pressure washing was overrated.
He tried to convince me that they would still scrape before painting, my thought were "if the pressure washing is rush, the paint will also be done in a half done manner;" after a long verbal disagreement, and speaking to my family, I inform the provider that we would not be using his services, he explained there was a personal matter going on, (and I do understand that) but that shouldn't get in the way of performing your job and running a business.
Our conversation stopped abruptly, with the provider hanging the phone up on me.
More could be said, but I won't.
"I am very sorry to read this review. The job in question consisted of cleaning, scraping & painting the rough stucco concrete in the gables of the home, this type of material requires hand washing, wire brushing, & scraping prior to painting. The day in question, I had been pressuring washing at another job and decided to stop by and lightly pressure wash some of the surface dirt. The job had been verbally agreed upon, but no contract signed as yet. I lightly pressured washed and as a bonus at no charge to the customer, lightly pressured washed the aluminum siding on the home. The customer inquired about a taller ladder to reach the areas, I explained the proper procedures for prepping the areas to be painted as hand washing, wire brushing, & scraping and that the proper equipment would be brought in when the contract was signed and the job date set. The customer questioned our ability to properly prep & paint due to the fact that a larger ladder was not used to pressure wash, even after repeated explanations by me that all proper equipment would be brought in once the job began and the fact that hand washing was best for this type of job and the materials and areas to be painted. Argumentative and questionable customer conversations continued. The personal problem mentioned in the review consisted of the loss of a beloved family pet of 18 years in the days before. I will admit this loss did have an impact on my lack of willingness to be argumentative, but in no way did it interfere in the running of my business of nearly 25 years. In the end communication failed, the contract was never signed, and no monies were ever exchanged. It's never pleasing for a job to end before it starts, but there are times when all communication fails and it's best for each party to go their separate ways. Trust and Reputation are extemely valuable in business, but most importantly in life!"
Like most contractors, it's always good to talk to the guy in charge then talk to the guys doing the work. There were a few miscommunications that added to delays, but everything was promptly resolved within a day.
In the end, we took our dilapidated looking building and made it look brand new with a new roof - siding, windows and trim - with the new paint color pulling it all together. They did an especially nice job on the interior trim & caulking job.
