The came out to the house and examined my chairs. They provided book samples for me to help choose fabric. The work was finished in a timely fashion.

They did a quality job and were professional. Pick up and delivery were free, or at least built in to the price. I solicited quotes from 4-5 upholsterers before I hired A1 and they were either on par or cheaper than other vendors. I would use them again.

We delivered a love seat that had been upholstered once before for about $400. The frame was in good shape and we were told that the prior stuffing had been done well, requiring no extra for this work. My wife picked out a fabric and was told to leave a deposit of $460 for the work. That seemed to be high for a deposit, given our last experience at another upholsterer, but we complied. I was told that they should deliver it instead of my picking it up to ensure that no damage occurs in the delivery process. They would charge us $75 for that delivery of a couple of miles. This is where we are to be faulted with some of the blame. We did not get an accurate estimate of the total project, relying on the last experience and some expected inflation to bring this in around $600-$700. The company promised that they would have this for us in about three weeks, and they met that deadline. When they called to explain that the bill would be $725, we assumed that would be the total cost. We did ask for that to be clarified. The person on the phone said they could not answer the question of cost breakdown and would have someone call us in a couple of days. That call was not forthcoming, so we placed another call and was told that they once again could not answer that question. Finally, a call back from A-1 revealed that it was an additional cost of $725 for labor and delivery. My wife explained that $1185 could buy a very expensive piece of furniture, and that this total cost was outrageous. They were obviously unmoved by her stated concerns or by her comments that we would never do business with them again, nor recommend them. It is one of the motivating reasons for listing our concerns here so that others do not get taken in by such high cost and that care be given to get a fair and accurate appraisal of the work before going forward.
