Buying or owning an old house comes with "surprises", and it is important to select a contractor that understands the idiosyncrasies that come along with working on one. Mike and the contractors he works with know about old houses and how to make them new again.
As new homeowners that wanted to be involved in the process, Mike even took the time to provide some helpful tips and advice to put our own touches.
We are exceptionally pleased with the ease of which we moved through what can be a complicated process. I think we owe this mostly to Mike and his talents as a general contractor.
As to those curious about pricing, I know a handful of people in construction who looked at our work, and got several estimates. Mitchell's pricing was very reasonable, and the savings on headaches and having to stand over someone's shoulder was priceless.
Highly recommended.
Our shower nightmare ended the first day Mitchell Construction showed up to work at our house. We'd dealt with a leaky shower that we couldn't use at all since we moved in to our house in late 2008. We live almost exactly halfway between Lexington and Louisville, and had difficult time finding contractors who would even follow through with giving us an estimate. Mike Mitchell arrived to do our estimate within just a few days of our initial call and was extremely professional and friendly. We received our proposal a few days later, and he answered follow up questions and provided clarifications promptly and clearly. Their proposed cost was actually the highest one we got, but not by much, and we definitely felt the most comfortable with the customer service and professionalism we got from Mitchell Construction.
On the first day of work, Mike walked in with David Noble, and introduced him to me as the person who would be working on our house. At first, it made me a little nervous to work with Mike for the initial part of the process and then to be handed off to another person, but these fears were quickly put to rest. David was extremely easy to work with, communicated clearly, and did high quality work. He spent about 2.5 weeks in our home, during which we were at home during the day only two days. He cleaned up and locked up each day, and we definitely felt our home was secure and treated as if it were his own.
The proposal indicated a two week time frame for the project, with a projected start date 4-6 weeks from the date of our signed contract. This was remarkably accurate. The work took just a couple days more than the two weeks, but the start date was on the earlier end of that projected--almost exactly 4 weeks from the date we signed. One reason the time frame went beyond two weeks was that David skipped a day so that he would need to be back on the day the glass company was available to measure for the shower door. That made it so neither my husband nor I needed to take a day off work to meet them, so we greatly appreciated that.
We changed the shower from 33 inches wide and 6 feet deep (think tunnel of shower) to 33 inches wide and about 4 feet deep. The remaining two feet became a closet in our laundry room, so one wall was demolished to open up the back of the shower to the laundry room, and another wall was built to create the new back of the shower. We wanted our shower niche to span the entire back of the shower, which David had not done before, but he did a beautiful job with it. David's specialties are tile and carpentry, and it really showed in the way the shower turned out (beautiful!) and in the shelving in the closet. It's obvious that he takes a great deal of pride in his work.
We had an issue a couple weeks after work was complete with some of the caulking in the corner of the shower shrinking up. I e-mailed David about it at 9:00 pm the night I discovered it, and he responded within the hour than he'd be out the next day to re-caulk it!
I would wholeheartedly recommend Mitchell Construction to anyone. When our next home improvement project that is beyond our skills comes up, Mitchell Construction will likely be our only phone call.
The project started on time and workers arrived at the times and dates they stated. The bathroom and steam shower turned out great. The tile work was better than expected and Mr Noble was very helpful in making our design happen including installing a pocket door to make the space more efficient. The vent work and fan keeps the steam moving out and is so quiet they put it on a timer so we wouldn't forget and leave the fan on.
They installed a raised subfloor throughout the rest of the basement which is great. Highly recommend that if you're finishing a basement.
The media room turned out quite fantastic. The focal point at one end is the stone fireplace with granite hearth, the feel of which is continued at the wet bar which helps to divide the long room. The bar back splash is also stone with a matching granite counter top. We couldn't really afford to do wood ceilings in a traditional way, but we stained bead board which MCM installed. It is perfect with a circular design around the ceiling fan and no seams visible.
In the craft room, they cut out a window opening in the concrete wall to install an egress window. Mike Mitchell was very careful to make certain that all was "to code" so that this room is now qualified to be listed as another bedroom if we should ever want to sell our home.
In the game room, they built an arched ceiling at one end which gave the room an interesting focal point. Attention to detail is something they always seemed to strive for.
The project did run a bit over on time, but some of it was due to our own addition of work. The end result was worth the wait though. We have no reservations in recommending Mitchell Construction.
