Don’t trust these money grabbing sickos. My dog was attacked while we were out of town and he spent 3 or 4 hours in their office with a gaping piece of his flesh tore off. They gave him pain meds. They didn’t give him any antibiotics. They didn’t suture the wound or even bandage it. They left him in there waiting for me to make a decision and they scared me that he was dying. They said he needed to be put into an oxygen tank of some sort and tht he had brain damage and his eyes weren’t reacting. They made me think he had no chance. As soon as I saw him I knew that he was shaken but that he was doing fine and they were trying to scare me into a $2500 dollar plus bill where they did a ton of unnecessary things and made the biggest bang for their buck. They didn’t even have the decency to bandage him up until I asked them to before taking him home so he could see his vet. They charged us 600 dollar for an X-ray, Ultrasound, and one pain shot and didn’t even have the decency to bandage him. Sad people work here that do not care about animals. They care about money. His vet patched him up for 400 dollars and he’s running around the house right now the day after. The lady who discharged said he would likely go down fast in the middle of the night and to be prepared for him to need to come back. Really sad. I wouldn’t take any animal here, they would probably be better off just dying at home.

Emergency service is always expensive but I think the price is fair. They were extremely responsive. We called and told them that we had an animal in distress and they met us at the door and took her immediately back. I hope to never have to use them again, but if I had to, I would. The workers that I came into contact with were professional, extremely kind, sympathetic, and kept us informed when we weren't in the back with our cat as to what was going on. The vet that interacted with our cat was incredible. She was very gentle. When she knew what was going on, she made sure to take care of the pain that she was having and sedated her a little bit so she wasn't so anxious, because it is quite painful. She had already lost all her motor to her lower limbs to her tail and she was already getting cold to her back end because of where her blood clot landed. She [the vet] was very thorough with our options and very honest about the on-going treatment, should we elect to do any kind of treatment would be, and what percent recovery we had, which was basically 5%. It would not have been without a lot of compromise to the cat.

When we started to notice that our puppy was having pain sitting, climbing stairs, and jumping, we looked for answers. We received the diagnosis that our 2 year old lab mix puppy had MLP (medial luxating patella) grade 4 bilaterally in her hind legs. Dr. Sarah Daniel at Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists (BVS) was the surgeon that was recommended to us. We could not have been more pleased with the care that our dog received. Dr. Daniel was very good at explaining what her condition was and how we should go about with treatment/ surgery. We were able to set up a surgery date very quickly. Since BVS is a 24/7 hospital we were able to drop her off early (6am) before work on surgery day and pick her up late (10pm) the following night due to our unusually work schedules for no extra cost. Dr. Daniel personally called me before her surgery and after to give me an update. I was reassured that I could call anytime during the night to receive an update, and I did. The tech gave me a full report on her eating, pain control, and if she pottied. Dr. Daniel was still at BVS late at night when we picked her up and gave us our discharge instructions personally even though it was an unusually busy night with traumas. She also encouraged us to contact her via phone or email if any questions or concerns arose. After we took our puppy home, I became concerned about her incision site and sent Dr. Daniel photos in an email, she was very quick to respond with answers. The second surgery was 8 weeks after the first and Dr. Daniels was just as sweet, comforting, and informative as the first surgery. After this surgery, our puppy was not as cooperative and used her cone to break into the incision site causing it to bleed and leak fluid a lot! In a panic, I called and was able to see Dr. Daniels with in 30 mins of my call. During the time that my dog was in the back being cleaned and bandaged, Wendy at the desk kept me calm and allowed me to cry over the stress. The hospital cat "Picky" let me pet him and cuddle as I waited. During this second surgery recovery processes I was in and out of BVS multiple times. Each time they treated both me and my dog with respect and love. My puppy ended up having two different cast on her leg and each one Dr. Daniels took the time to make it extra special with either a heart or flower to make sure my girl "felt pretty." Major shout outs to the whole staff. I interacted with several, whether over the phone or in person, they were ALL great! Very loving, understanding, supportive and knowledgeable. Dr. Sarah Daniels, Wendy at the front desk, and Picky the cat will hold a special place in my heart for everything they did for both me and my puppy. As far as cost--- We did not have pet insurance so everything was out of pocket. They are wonderful with giving you a high and low possible cost for each surgery and sticking to it. For me, there were no hidden fees or cost. Her first surgery was just over $2,100. I can't remember exactly, but I believe you have to pay 80% up front and the remainder when you pick your dog up after surgery. Which for us was the next day. The second surgery was a little cheaper because they categorized certain things as "additional" which made it less expensive. We paid about $1,700 for the second surgery and an extra (unexpected) $150ish in repeat visits caused by my puppy being a naughty recovery patient. It was pricey but well worth our sweet girl not being in pain when she uses her legs.

In the worst of circumstances, we needed a vet after hours and contacted BVS (+ Animal Emergency).
Wendy was very kind and helpful on the phone, and agreed to work us in late on a Sunday evening.
We arrived around 8:30; our tech was Hannah.
She was also very kind, sensitive to the circumstance, and discussed the available options professionally.
We saw the doctor around 10 - the wait was a little long, but not unreasonable considering how busy they were and the obvious needs of other pets; and Theo was not in distress waiting.
Dr. Molly Hastings explained again what would happen, so that there was no unneeded confusion.
Thanks to all at BVS / + Animal Emergency for making a difficult time a little less difficult.

Took my 12 year old German Shepherd who was in considerable discomfort (retching , disoriented). When I arrived the technician wasted no time in getting him back for an x-ray. After 5-10 mins, Dr Molly Hastings entered the exam room and introduced herself and calmly explained to me the situation and options available. The surgeon was immediatley paged and within 30 mins had arrived. I was allowed to go back and see my dog or a few mins before the surgeon arrived and he was really miserable...I could tell he was very close to going into total shock. Dr Hastings and the staff did an excellent job in stabilizing him. Throughout the operation (~2hrs) Dr Hastings came out to give me updates. When it was over, Dr Sarah Daniel came out and gave me the best news possible. She was very helpful throughout his entire recovery process and even sent pictures of him during his 2 day hospital stay. The entire staff was very accomodating. When I say and quot;entire staffand quot;, I really mean the entire staff. I would like everyone who was working that night to know that they all performed admirably and should be indiviually recognized for a job very well done. Never once did I feel that my dog wasn't the most important patient to them. While I'm sure not every outcome is as good as mine was, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend BVS to any pet owner faced with the same situation.

Yes, I spent a large amount of money on the surgery. However they gave me an estimate in writing before-hand and even gave me suggestions on small things I could do to lessen the cost. The staff and especially Dr. Daniel were absolutely wonderful-with me and my dog. Dr. Daniel made herself available anytime during my dog's post-op time. Either via phone, or for weekend questions/concerns via email. She did a wonderful job on the surgery and I can definitely say it is worth the extra money ($200 or so as compared to equal service in the Lexington area) for the piece of mind of great care for my pet. There is someone there 24 hrs a day to provide care for the animals-not just into the evening. It is worth repeating the staff was wonderful and very caring.

They offer an after hours and quot;emergencyand quot; room also. Thankfully I have not had to utilize this service but I would not hesitate if I needed to.

Our dog started to have seizures on March 9th, 2012 about 10 PM. We took him to Bluegrass Veterinary Clinic which is now Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists ( Very suspicious the 2 different names)? Do they switch back and forth when there is a problem?
The Vet on staff that night was Molly Hastings. I should also add that this clinic is staffed mostly by relief vets since the main vet is off the majority of the time. Nicky's seizues stopped on their own but they failed to start him on blood pressure medicine which I would later find out is standard protocol for an animal in this situation. They recommended that he spend the night for observation.
Since I was at work my husband picked Nick up the next morning. He appeared to be normal but was home for no more than an hour before he started having seizures again. This time they paralyzed his rear legs and caused him to go blind we believe. He cried out in pain continually after that and we ultimately had to make the decison no owner EVER wants to make. I believe with all my heart he would still be here today had we been smart enough to go to the OTHER REAL specialty hospital on the other side of Lexington.
Please keep your previous belonging away from this place there is NO love of animals here. They have no voice it is only through us that they can receive the care that they deserve!
