The whole story:
The garage door broke late on a Friday night. It would only go up a couple of feet and then it stopped. Because my car was trapped inside and I knew I needed to get out on Saturday, I decided to see if I could leave a message or talk to an answering service at the office. I called Overhead Door, which I had used before, and was put on hold. After about two or three minutes, I hung up and tried Amzac, which several of my friends had used and been happy with. (I saw that both were highly rated on Angie's List too). It was now 11 p.m. A man who I learned later was likely the company's owner, answered the phone at home. He diagnosed the issue (broken spring) and offered to walk us through opening it manually to get my car out. I declined and asked if I could get service on Saturday. He said that it would cost more. I said how much more? There was a pause and he said and quot;about $150). I really wanted the door fixed, so I said OK.
The next morning, the owner's 19-year-old grandson arrived right on time. He was polite and seemed to know what he was doing. But he had only been on the job for a month, and appeared not to have been trained on how to fill out an invoice. He told me it was $320, but that figure and the fact that two springs had been replaced were the only two things on the receipt. As a result, I don't know how much was for parts, how much was labor and how much was extra for the weekend service. (You'd think there would be a flat dollar amount or percentage added for weekend service). He also mentioned a warranty but acknowledged that he didn't know the details of the warranty. Because it was a Saturday, and I just wanted the door fixed, I didn't pursue. But I think it's worth mentioning. I'd use them again, but would ask more questions on the front end.
Update 11/21/13: I did get this week in the mail a professional, detailed receipt.
We would definitely recommend Amzac, and would certainly use them again!
