The dog was clearly sick. She had a fever and a large lump under her chin. We called the vet for an appointment and were told to come right in. After a thorough examination, including taking some fluid from the swollen area, the vet told us the dog needed to be under hospital care. She said an exact diagnosis could take several days after sending tissue to a lab. We agreed that she should treat the symptoms of the illness, but not spend time or money on a complete diagnosis. The vet sedated the dog, inserted an IV needle and began to administer fluids and antibiotics. The dog stayed in the hospital over a weekend. The animals have constant care 7 days a week because a technician lives on the premises. After the dog returned home, we administered the prescribed medications. The vet even showed us how to give a pill to a dog. The dog seems to be back to normal, protecting our family from all the local wildlife. We live in the middle of 50 acres of woodlands, so there is a lot of wildlife. The veterinarian and the technicians were very gentle with an animal that was obviously in pain. We will definitely use this veterinary service again if we need it.
