We noticed the next day (Friday) that the paint had bubbled up on our newly painted baseboard along 1, 6-inch section of wall (we'd painted it the week prior). They were aware of this because we told them & our paint supplies were still out. Our daughter had a birthday that week-end & we didn't call until the following week. I reasoned: Who comes out on a Saturday? And, frankly, we didn't have the time to wait to coordinate a visit with someone due to the activities of the week-end.
We had borrowed a dehumidifier to put in the basement (which is normally very dry because it's a walkout ) because our previous experience with carpet cleaning is that it leaves carpets very wet. From Thursday until Tuesday it pulled out over 5 GALLONS of water.
We had the party & had company that week-end. By Sunday night we noticed that the baseboards were turning yellow. By Sunday the carpet was drying in the middle of the basement, but we noticed that the baseboards along the two walls they'd sprayed seemed like they were warping and the bubbled paint section had grown to a 14-inch section. When we went back down on Monday, we noticed the carpets were still wet along the walls & the baseboards.
We'd had rain that week-end & thought maybe we'd had a leak. We reasoned why call Chem-Dry if our basement had a leak? When we pried them off we saw that the MDF board was disintegrating our sill plate and drywall were dry and concluded that this had been because the carpet had been soaked Tuesday and Thursday!
When we figured it was the carpet cleaning that was the cause, we called. It was Tuesday morning. We were told the owner would call us back. I called again on Wed. around 1:00 pm & was told he'd call when he got the chance. He called about an hour later and I explained the story just as I have here & asked they reimburse us for the cost of new baseboards (about $50 for 40 ft.) explaining we didn't call until things progressively worsened (yellowing & buckling of the baseboards which didn't occur until Sunday night).
Greg (the owner) was incredulous that that much water could have been used. He then starts grilling me as to why I didn't call when the carpets weren't dry in the 1-2 hour timeframe!! I told him that we'd NEVER experienced carpets dried in 1-2 hours even though that's the claim of every other carpet company and didn't think it unusual. I also explained that there were extraordinary circumstances that week-end. He asked why didn't we call them Saturday? I explained that I didn't know they were open Saturday & getting ready for the party I didn't have time to wait for someone to come that day. He said we shouldn't have taken off the baseboards. I said our walkout basement has never had a leak but when it rained that week-end & only the 2 outside walI's baseboards start buckling we wanted to take them off to make sure we didn't have a leak. I told him once we removed them we determined it was the carpet cleaning & we have the boards here for him to inspect and had not put any new ones up. I asked if he would come out and take a look.
He continued to chastise me first for NOT calling on Friday, (we didn't think anything was unusual & thought a little touch up paint in the area would do the trick) for NOT calling Saturday (didn't know they were open & we had a party and company all week-end), for NOT leaving the baseboards on the wall (we wanted to make sure we didn't have a leak), for NOT calling on Monday (no excuse. I thought my husband called, so I called Tuesday). He then lectures me about how he can clean an area rug on a hardwood floor without having to remove it from the floor & reiterates he still can't believe that much water was used on our basement carpet.
By now, I'm stunned that I'm getting grilled, lectured, & interrogated as to why we didn't drop all our plans to deal with carpets. I said, "It sounds like we're at an impasse. I am asking if you will come and look at our baseboards & reimburse us for the cost of them & the carpet still smells in the areas we applied the $109 PURT treatment." He then lectures me again that we didn't call...they could have come out & tested the carpet...now the baseboards are off & he can't believe that this happened.
I reiterated again that this was the first time we'd used them & since he wasn't willing to come out & look or to offer to replace the boards (about $50 worth) then there wasn't much else to say. He said, "I'm sorry I couldn't help you." and our call ended. (I was shocked when he said that.) We were trying to be cautious, had an unusually busy week-end, and instead were treated as if we were at fault. This company has lost our future business over $50 worth of baseboards. We will never use them again. I also am filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
