The wait time was probably between 10-15 minute. My cat doesn't like going to the veterinarians so they have to wear gloves. They seem to really care and are very patient. They are really caring with the animals, I see it with how they treat others as well just not my own.
Being that my guinea pig needed care and I didn't want to take him to a vet that "doesn't specialize" in small animals, I searched the Internet for an area provider. Erlanger Veterinary Hospital was the only one certified by the AEMV (Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians) and yes, a guinea pig is an exotic pet.
The initial visit and examination was $81, but I was surprised by the in depth level of the exam. Dr. Schumann attempted less invasive means, an aspiration and a lance, during the initial visit, but my piggy needed surgery. Dr. Schumann thoroughly explained the pros and cons of the surgery and didn't pressure me into the decision.
On the day of surgery, the staff was kind to me on my numerous "worried momma" calls and Dr. Schumann called me himself when the surgery was completed and Baxter was in recovery.
My final bill, which included the initial exams and treatments, surgery, anesthesia, an prescription pain medicines, was a lot less than bills I've had for cats and dogs at other vets.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Schumann, his staff, and the cleanliness of the facility. I wouldn't hesitate to take either of my piggies back to him or recommend him to others. By the way, they do dogs and cats too.
A few months later, I ordered our 2 dogs flea/heartworm medicine from 1-800 Petmeds. Something I have done for years now and had no problem with at our previous vet. After not recieving the medicine for weeks, I call 1-800 petmeds and ask what's up. They tell me that our vet would not authorize this medicine. So of course, I call Erlanger Vet and ask what's going on. They then informed me that they do not do business with 1-800 petmeds. Furious, that no one had informed me of this prior to the order (even though I mentioned it at the appointment) I ask the gentleman on the phone if there is any way they can approve the order. He kept insisting that they do a Price Match for whatever we paid on Petmeds website. I informed him numerous times that I have already paid 1800 petmeds for the medicine. He continued to say that they do not do business with them.
So now, not only do I have to find a new vet practice because I will NEVER take my animals back there again. I also, have to get 1800 Petmeds to refund my money so that I can go up to Petsmart and buy the medicine OTC from Banfield.
For the money they charge you to see your pets, they should take their customers time and happiness in to consideration.
Just because they want you to use their pharmacy and buy the medicine, from them doesn't mean they should inconvenience their customers.
Erlanger Veterinary Hospital should have caught the cancer sooner is my point.
"We know how painful is is to lose a beloved pet and we are sorry you lost Dallas. We saw Dallas 7/5/2011. After his examination, a CBC, a chemistry profile and a chest x-ray were completed. Dr. Vecchione explained that Dallas had a very serious problem and the only differentials were a fungal pneumonia or metastatic lung cancer. We sent out a test for the fungal disease and since Dallas was eating and drinking we sent him home with antibiotics to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. The next day we spoke to you and Dallas was still coughing so we sent a bronchodialator to help with the cough. On 7/7/2011 you picked up your records because you were moving to Michigan. Dr. Vecchione spoke to you and relayed the results of the fungal screen as being negative and suggested you follow up at Michigan State for further diagnostics of the lung cancer. On 7/8/2012 we received a report from Michigan State confirming the metastatic cancer and you elected to euthanize Dallas. In reviewing what we did for Dallas I cannot see anything we could have done better or faster for him. We suspected the lung cancer from the chest x-ray the first day we examined him and did the diagnostics to confirm his condition was not treatable. All of this took place in 3 days, during which you moved 2 states away. Although I do understand your pain, I do not understand why you hold us responsible for losing your dog. You have a record of everything we did and if you would like to discuss this or if you need another copy to refresh your memory, please call us. Again, I am sorry you had to lose Dallas."
