I was quoted $324 for "standard" installation. The plumber added an additional $161 for installing a pan which retails for around $20 and shortening the water inlet and outlet lines along with a new shutoff valve because the new water heater was 1.5 inches taller. The retail price of best shutoff valve is around $15. I asked him if both changes are not covered by the "standard" installation he said no. He could not tell me what the "standard" installation includes! Anxious to get my hot water back on. I agreed to these outrageous overcharges. I later complained to Home Depot installation department about these additional outrageous charges and they told they will look into it and get back to me. So far, it has been over 5 days and have not heard from them. It appears to me that the installation team of Home Depot is on this to take their own cut out of these outrageous overcharges. I have no issues with Home Depot store but with their plumbing installation department. Hope Home Depot needs to investigate this department. This department is a bad reflection on Home Depot.
I purchased the hot water heater from Lowes. When the plumber arrived with the hot water heater he discovered there were additional issues which raised the price a couple of hundred BUT I am thankful he discovered the source of the problem. I had had another plumber here a couple of weeks ago who could not figure out what was causing some issues in my basement plumbing--- now I know there was a serious pressure issue building up which eventually caused the failure of my hot water heaters etc.
I was impressed with his knowledge, thorough explanation of the problem, cost, etc., and his professionalism.
They quickly went to the local Home Depot (the home warranty company contracted through Home Depot to KW) and got the replacement.
The plumber was actually a licensed plumber (not just working under someone else's license) and did a beautiful job. He took pride in his craftsmanship.
They also did a few extra hook ups on the water line for my humidifier that needed to be done for a small extra fee. It all works and looks great!
During installation, the contractor from K W Mechanical added $197.75 more for what turned out to be $53 worth of parts, taking the cost up to $1,003.75 (plus $40 county inspection fee.)
* $87.75 for a NIBCO S-FP600A shut-off valve (that retails for $14.76,)
* $70 for an Oatey 26and quot; drip pan(that retails for $28.99,) and
* $40 for a 3' drain pipe (worth about $4.)
(He did not even bother to check to find out if the shut-off valve worked properly or not. If it was simply a question of a $14.76 shut-off valve, anyone would replace it without thinking twice, but to be charged $87.75 to replace a valve that was in working order is abusive. The installer from KW Mechanical said it had to be replaced because it would not pass inspection due to some surface corrosion.)
The water heater installation was inspected on 1/16/2014 by a technician of the plumbing division of the Hamilton County, OH Health Dept. He told me that is familiar with K.W. Mechanical, having received previous complaints about them from residents of Hamilton County, including 3 within the month. He was not surprised by K.W. Mechanical's $87.75 charge for a shut-off valve that he personally knew has an installed value of $20 to $25. (He was told by other compainants of their being charged $90 and amp; $110 by K.W. Mechanical.) I can only surmise that my overcharge was less because I am a male with work tools openly visible in my basement, and per the inspector, a little elderly lady was charged $110.)
The inspector confirmed that the replacement of my shut-off valve was unnecessary if it was in good working order and did not leak,and the presence any green surface corrosion did not justify K.W. Mechanical telling me it required replacement. (He then telephoned K.W. Mechanical right there on the spot and advised them to cease and desist in the practice of wrongly telling water heater installation customers they needed non-leaking functioning valves replaced.)
If he has this kind of experience with K.W. Mechanical, it stands to reason that if you multiply his received complaints by the entire staff of the Hamilton Co. plumbing inspectors, then K.W. Mechanical is inflicting a great deal of damage upon the reputation of Home Depot in the Greater Cincinnati area. Having bought a prior water heater through Home Depot in 2000, and having shopped there regularly through the years, I know that Home Depot does not deserve this kind of bad publicity.
Home Depot issued me a store gift certificate and coaxed KW to send me a partial refund for their overcharge.
The lesson to be learned from this is to know beforehand, who is going to do the installation of a home improvement purchase.
Within a day or so KW Mechanical contacted me and agreed to come to my house within 30 minutes of the call. They arrived promptly and gave me a price of $279 for the installation, plus $40 for a plumbing permit. The gentleman from KW also told me that since I was purchasing the hot water heater myself with the 10% off coupon, I should also purchase a drip pan (code in Hamilton County) and a 2-gallon expansion tank. He told me that it would cost much less than what they would have to charge me for those two additional components. I greatly appreciated his honesty.
I had quotes from other plumbers that wanted to charge $65 for the plumbing permit (Hamilton County actually charges $40 for the permit), $85 for the expansion tank (I paid $40 at HD), and $50 for the drip pan (I paid $18 at HD).
I purchased the water heater, drip pan and expansion tank and scheduled the installation for a week later (this was not an emergency simply, a replacement for a 21 year old water heater that was living on borrowed time).
KW showed up on time, completed the installation in a little over an hour and removed the old water heater.
I wrote two checks, one for $279 to HD for the installation and one for $40 to KW Mechanical for the plumbing permit.
Even if you don't have a 10% off coupon, purchasing the water heater and installation through HD is a good deal since HD stands behind the installer. In addition, HD provides a 2-year in-home material/labor replacement. All other plumbers only provided a 1-year material/labor replacement.
I would definitely use HD/KW Mechanical again.
