"Dave and Dave Jr and their guys explained the project accurately and completely during the planning phase. When the materials arrived, I was fully prepped for what would take place. When work began, the guys worked tirelessly in extreme heat but never stopped until the project was completed. The care for the 1650sf of patio pavers was explained and they even followed up with suggestions and education to make our patio better than we ever envisioned. Additionally, Elite built us a beautiful outdoor grill area, tiki torch towers and a gas fire pit we enjoy at sundown. Weâ ve had Elite Hardscapes back to do another project (paver steps and landings and lots of low-voltage landscape accent lighting) and are equally happy as we were on the first big project. We are already discussing the next project they will do for usâ ¦theyâ re really the best and my wife and I highly recommend them without any reservation."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

In most cases, buying plants from a local greenhouse or nursery is well worth the investment, even though they tend to be a bit more expensive than those at a home improvement store. Employees at nurseries are usually well-versed in gardening and understand how the climate in your area affects different plants. They can help you make selections based on your skill level and time commitment to your landscaping, and they can provide detailed care instructions and advice to help keep your plants alive and diagnose and treat issues like pest infestation and illness.

Plant privet hedges at least 1 foot apart in a trench about 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep. It’s important to space privet hedges relatively far apart due to how quickly they grow to significant sizes and heights. You don’t want to crowd privet plants, or they could overcrowd each other, causing unwanted damage.

If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.

Since the nature of the landscaping project can heavily influence the overall cost, it helps to understand what different types of landscaping projects cost on average. For example:

  • Plant a tree: $100–$2,000

  • Build a retaining wall: $3,250–$9,200

  • Reseed a lawn: $450–$1,700

  • Install a water fountain: $950–$4,800

  • Install a paver patio: $2,400–$7,000

  • Install a concrete walkway: $1,200–$2,400

  • Install a flower bed: $800–$3,000

  • Landscape lighting: $2,000–$6,000

The average cost for landscaping is around $3,500, but prices can range from as low as $200 for simple DIY projects to $14,000 or more for extensive work. Several factors influence the final price, including your geographic location, yard size, project scope, chosen materials, site preparation, and the type of landscaping involved. Professional landscaper labor costs typically range from $50 to $100 per hour.

For a smaller budget, you can focus on softscaping projects like adding mulch, flowers, and shrubs, which might only cost a few hundred dollars if you do the work yourself. A budget of around $5,000 could cover projects like a simple patio, new plants and tree trimming, or a water feature. More extensive hardscaping projects, such as pergolas, patios, and walkways, can push the budget to $14,000 or more. For example, a flower bed installation averages between $800 and $3,000, while landscape lighting installation can cost from $2,000 to $6,000.
