I took the next day off, and about an hour and a half past the time I was told they would be there, a guy pulls into my driveway hauling a bobcat on a trailer. He gets out of the truck unsteadily, and tells me he had an accident loading the bobcat on the trailer - He had done a full split on the ice on the back of the trailer and now he could barely walk due to a groin injury. I felt really bad for him, and told him he should go see a doctor right away. The guy could hardly stand.
I told him I didn't want them using a bobcat on my lawn since the ground was so wet and saturated, and he said and quot;Oh no, Ma'am, we would never use that on a residential propertyand quot; which left me wondering which job he had been preparing to go to that day. In any case, he walked, doubled over, around the property as we discussed the details of the fence job. After that, he called in for back-up and they sent over a Mexican guy who spoke no English. The two men conferred, the hurt guy left for the emergency room, I went into work, and the Mexican guy took over.
Things went ok for a couple of days, - they set the fence posts in the rain, but said they had to cure for a couple of days because it was so cold and wet. After four days they were a no-show, no-call and I was wondering what was going on. I called their office, and started to tell them the situation. I was interrupted, asked my regional location and was brusquely informed that I would only be able to speak to the salesman, Mike, who was not in the office, as this was his area. This was a pattern that repeated over the next week - apparently nobody in the office can discuss a job other than the person who's turf it was. Mike finally called and told me that they had been taking the last two days off as my rolling driveway gate was being custom built. I thought this was odd, as it seemed you would have done that on the rainy days, and hung the fence on the good days...but anyway... they showed up the next day and I pointed out that they had forgotten to cut out and set the posts for a garden gate I had wanted installed on the front of the house. When I purchased the house, there was a wooden fence piece that blocked my access to the hose bib for the front of the house, and I wanted them to install a door in the area. When I came home that evening, I saw a 4and quot; x 4and quot; metal pre-fabbed frame for a gate that screws into wood slats leaning up against the house in that area. I asked they guy if that was for the gate, he said and quot;yesand quot; and I told him that was not what I wanted. I explained I wanted a and quot;garden gateand quot; - just some black hinges and a latch I could padlock to keep that back alley secure. This is a house in the Historic District and looks matter. He said he understood exactly what I wanted and would pick up some hinges and a latch tomorrow. When I came home the next night they had set the posts (no cure time needed this time?), hung the prefabbed gate, which by the way was 5and quot; thick and did not close flush. In fact, it just pushed up against the other post leaving a 5and quot; differential between the gate and the fence it was leaned against. I immediately called Mike and told him I wanted it removed. The thing weighed 200 lbs and was an eyesore, let alone that you could never attach a padlock to a door that was 5and quot; thick and didn't close flush. They came in the next day and removed it. Mike told me that that was the only kind of fence they would hang...no other. I have no idea why they hung it against my wishes, other than that they wanted the $800 they charged me for that gate. I had never said I wasn't going to pay them, that was not my intention, it was just obvious to me that these guys had never done real residential work and I didn't want them to touch that at that point...Still, I was angry that they had done sub-par work against my wishes and I really didn't want anything to do with them at that point. I paid in full. No comment made.
Now for the latest... my front gate is not functional. They mis-measured the opening for the gate that leads to my front door. Instead of leaving the recommended space between the latch and the post, they installed the latch flush with the post. It was hard to operate for the first few months, but if you lifted up on the gate it could work. I wasn't happy with it, but I could live with it. I had hoped it would get better... now the gate is fully non-functional. The mailman, if he can open it, can't close it and has been leaving it open. It doesn't matter how high you manually lift the gate, there is no clearance. Please see pics. I called their office, got the same brush-off about who's territory it is, left a message on Mike's voice mail, but no response... I will let you know if the situation has been righted, but really, aren't measurements very important in doing fence work? This should have been done right the first time.
How would I describe them? Amateurish at best and I would never recommend them for residential work.
companies. They had everything ready to be picked up when I needed it and loaded everything onto pallets and then forklifted it onto my truck. Couldn't have gone smoother.
It was actually done faster than we were told. They set the poles on Thursday and had the gates built and installed on Friday -- which was originally scheduled for the following Monday. I came home from work and was pleasantly suprised that it was done.
The installer that came out was very nice and professional and did a great job.
Even though they came in far lower than the rest -- the quality didn't suffer at all. Would use them again and again and recommend to anyone.
"thank you for the opportunity to install your fence. we are glad you like the fence."
