"Store Owner states that no customer by this name has done business within Big O Tires for over 6 years. Any and all searches by store owner does not show a customer existing on March 13th either on or around this dollar amount either. Would love to have the opportunity to speak with customer - please contact Dutch Tryon at Big O Tires. Thanks!"
"My name is Dutch Tryon, store owner of Big O Tires. This customer has made complete false statements. First of all the repairs in question was on 07/19/2010, Secondly, the repairs to address the coolant leak was $285.27 and the remainder was for valve cover gaskets and a timing belt kit - NON RELATED TO THE COOLANT LEAK. The customer returned on 08/17/2010 a month later with a small coolant leak - it was a molded radiator tube, the repair cost $89.51 to fix. As always, we do not repair or qoute anything that we cannot prove. When a system is pressure tested and there is a large leak, you must fix it first. After the initial repair we retested and the system held pressure, then a month later it leaked from another area. [member name removed] falsely stated the time of service in 2011 and falsely stated the amounts and the facts! We take pride in what we do and will not over sell to anybody. We cannot control future leaks, however if it is directly related to our repairs then we cover under warranty. Thank You...Dutch Tryon - Store Owner"
My tire wouldn't hold air....discovered a nail embedded. Big O told me that due to federal regulations, they (or any other service center) wouldn't be able to repair the tire since it was within 1" of the sidewall. Further, because I have an all-wheel drive, I would need all four tires replaced. The tires had over 45K miles on them, so I had anticipated needing to replace them and was prepared to do that.
The problems began when we set up an appointment the following day to install the tires. BY PHONE (our first mistake!), Tim Drinkard, "tire/service specialist," quoted a total (tire and labor) or $138.95 per tire. We agreed to that price and set up the appointment for 8:00 the following morning.
When I arrived, I made my 2nd mistake: not verifying the price quoted before they took the car back to the work area. Instead, I took them at their word. They took the car back and told me it would take approximately 45 minutes. He then asked if I wanted the car aligned for an additional $70; I agreed since I ate some pretty sizable potholes last winter. He said that would take another 30 minutes.
I sat down to wait. After an hour and a half, Tim came out and said there was a problem with the right front camber bolt and that it really needed to be replaced if I was going to the trouble of new tires and alignment. Third mistake: I agreed, again because of the abuse the car had taken last winter. Tim assured me it wouldn't take long.
Forty-five minutes later, I finally found Tim and asked how much longer. "Those camber bolts are tough to put it." I waited 20 minutes longer until he finally came out and said we could take care of the paperwork while the mechanic was taking the car out for a test drive.
And now the shocker: rather than the $139 per tire we'd been quoted, the invoice indicated the price (excluding the alignment and camber bolt part/labor) as $165 per tire. When I balked, Tim said he'd discount $10 per tire. When I stated the quote he'd originally given, he stated that he would never make such a quote and that I was "wrong" (his word). Although I had the notes taken from the previous phone conversation, he stated that they had not been written accurately......even though my husband had verified them via phone the previous night.
Huge difference in price? Not huge, but considerable. But there is no doubt in my mind that there was lack of integrity and honesty on Big O's part and that there may have been some bait-and-switch tactics thrown in for good measure. The time promised was not the time taken, and interim communication was minimal.
I expressed my displeasure, but paid the bill in full. (perhaps that was another mistake, but at that point, I was 20 minutes late for an appointment and needed to move on.)
I am not without fault: I should have had them email/fax me the quote (even though I am completely confident the numbers written down were the numbers quoted, and Tim agreed when we read them back to him). Lesson learned. But having said that, this is not a business which operates entirely on the up-and-up........no doubt in my mind about that either. We won't return, and I cannot in good consciousness ever recommend them. We'll go elsewhere in the future.
"Customer did contact the store owner, Dutch Tryon advising him of the price qoute difference. Mr. Tryon in goodwill did issue refund to the customer for the price difference. Due to the alignment needing an additional part it did require additonal time to conduct the proper alignment. This time was re-established. We take a lot of pride in our service and made it right with the customer"
