Our problems with Phoenix Specialties: *VERY poor initial ?contract? or estimate; did not give itemized details of what is included, which lead to some discrepancies in budget later on. *Tendency for the contractors to do things according to their interpretation of the plan rather than asking for our opinion or clarification. *Would just not show up for days at a time and would not call to detail why. *Not responsive to phone calls or emails. *There was a 7 month lapse between the project being 95% and 100% completed. During the 7 month gap, we called and emailed numerous times. They even agreed to dates to come and did not show nor call. We had to hound them to get a response. **Poor attention to detail in: *Drywalling- We ended up with taping lines, cracks, poorly matched ceiling to wall portions. *Tile work-We had travertine tile in the bathroom, which to be expected, is a natural stone and is going to have some variance in thickness?there was one piece that was ?? higher than the others surrounding it, right in front of the vanity and was a safety hazard. Their solution was to file it down on the raised corner, which looks absolutely horrible and we have to hire someone else to fix their work *Countertop installation There was a 1/8? gap between the countertop and splash board that developed 6 months later. Their solution was to squirt a bunch of putty into the space, plus the edging they put on the countertop does not fit the shape correctly. The bathroom wall between the vanity and shower is not level which meant the solid surface countertop of the measurement they asked, pulled away from the wall 6 months later. Their solution again was to squirt more caulking into the enlarged area. *Painting Many places had ?rings? visible around the outlets and vents. Ceilings had wall color on them in parts. *Framing They put where they thought walls should be rather than what our plans said. When confronted, they acted annoyed that the walls needed to be moved. We were charged for these changes, although they were not changes, but rather adherence to the original plans. They did agree to remove the change fee. *Doors We were not asked what type/quality of door would be installed and they selected doors that had particle board insides. Unfortunately, they never sanded the edges of the doors, so we now snag our clothes on them. **Positives of Phoenix Specialties: *They likely do good handyman work for small projects. *Relatively reasonable prices (but you get what you pay for)
Description of Work: The project was to finish our basement. The basement was unfinished before the project started, containing only a furnace and water heater, so they were starting from scratch. The plan was to create a workout room, a bathroom, storage room, bedroom, entertainment area and a homebrewing room. The services as part of this effort included dry walling, insulating, plumbing, electrical work, tiling, painting, installing the flooring, prefab cabinet installation.
