Lowe's Home Improvement

Hardware & Home Improvement Stores, Doors, Appliance Sales and Installation,

About us

Lowe’s has been helping our customers improve the places they call home for more than 60 years. Founded in 1946, Lowe’s has grown from a small hardware store to the second-largest home improvement retailer worldwide. Our story began in North Carolina, when Carl Buchan, part owner of the North Wilkesboro Hardware Company, envisioned creating a chain of hardware stores. He purchased the company from his brother-in-law and partner and had the foresight to anticipate a post-World War II building boom. By eliminating wholesalers and dealing directly with manufacturers, Lowe’s established a lasting reputation for low prices. Sales grew over time and we expanded all across the country and now operate stores not only in the United States, but also in Canada and Mexico. Although times have changed since Lowe’s first opened its doors in 1946, Lowe’s values have not— the company remains committed to offering high-quality home improvement products at everyday low prices, while delivering superior customer service. $5,400
I placed an order online for more than $5,000 worth of kitchen remodeling supplies, which might be chump change to Lowe's but certainly isn't to me. The total was more than my bank would authorize without permission from me, so once I got it, Lowe's was supposed to debit the account THAT DAY. Did they? No, they waited a few days and the transaction got declined again. So what did they do? They CANCELED THE ORDER without even trying to contact me. I spent innumerable occasions on the phone at the store and on the 800 line, neither of which ever get answered by human beings and both of which involve interminable hold times and annoying recorded messages about how IMPORTANT your call is to them. Then their logistics people only brought me HALF of the order, although they charged me for all of it, of course. More time on the phone. Trying to split the order in half so it would go through my bank without permission. Trying to get the half they hadn't brought delivered with what was left. This involved GOING TO THE STORE IN PERSON to re-order the canceled items. Then they failed to show up three days in a row. Fortunately I'm working from home, but that doesn't make a difference to me. I'm sitting here right now, having received a text from logistics telling me they were one minute away ... twenty minutes ago ... and just before receiving the text I saw the truck DRIVE PAST MY HOUSE. Apparently reading street addresses isn't on the list of required vocational skills for their drivers. I'm on hold with the logistics call center, which is neither a toll free number NOR answered by a human being, with insipid piano music and intermittent assurances of how IMPORTANT my call is to them, even though they've left me on hold for more than ten minutes. Suffice it to say that once this order is finally delivered, Lowe's will never see another dime from me, ever, even on things I can carry out of their store myself. They obviously don't care enough about their customers to be worth bothering with.

The pre-installation came out higher than I expected so Mike helped me pick out a cheaper dishwasher (but the same quality) than I had chosen.

When I went to return unused deck materials, the return process was horrible, later I figured out part of the reason.
These crooks substituted a much cheaper spindle when they delivered the deck materials, but charged me the higher price.
At $.39 a spindle, they made an extra $65 off me.
update - they did refund the price difference, but I am stuck with the wrong spindles on my deck.

First day of construction or I should say and quot;destructionand quot; began on October 17, 2011. Total destruction of the kitchen, hauling off all the old stuff and leaving the kitchen bare, ceiling gone and old tile floor ripped out. This was done in one day and the debris was cleaned up beautifully. Lowe's uses several contracting companies and the one serving us was Jim's Home Repair. Of note, Lowe's completely guarantees his work product. Next day was the reworking of the electrical and rerouting of some of the plumbing as needed. We found that we had a weak subfloor and needed reinforcing and replacement. That involved an additional cost but reasonable so. We have cabinets installed, walls painted, electrical working, etc. Awaiting now for the countertop people to come out and measure and then install the next week. We were most impressed with the counter top installers-TopMaster used by this Lowes store. Very professional people and went the extra mile to fit the new faucets to the new sink we selected.
The countertops, sink, and all appliances were installed as per our plans. Of special note is commenting on the construction company that Lowe's engaged in this renovation., Jim's Home Repair. Fairly well adhered to his initial estimate submitted and his work product was acceptable, however, this contractor can be described as a minimalist. As an an example, the transition oak molding affixed to both doorways did finish off the surface from a tiled floor to the adjacent wooden floors, but they were left in an untreated (read raw oak) condition, it was left up to the homeowner to apply a protective finish to the transition moldings. Our tile backsplash on the countertop designed to butt up to the flat countertop should have had a silicone bead applied to the 90 degree angle to prevent moisture wickup into the grout, although promised was not installed. This will be another owner controlled project. The kitchen window surround molding was replaced and should have had a final coat of paint on the molding, over the pre-primed molding purchased from Lowe's, but the final coat of paint was applied later by the owner. Interior painting of the kitchen especially adjacent to the white cabinets was not crisp defining the breaking line of color--appears the owner will have to correct that. We purchased a new refrigerator from Lowe's that was 36and quot; wide. On the buildout of the cabinets a space was left for the installation of the refrigerator. When Lowe's appliance folks came to install the frig, they had a devil of a time placing the frig in the hole. Kudos to Lorenzo for his efforts he did get it installed but mentioned that the floor in that inset didn't appear to be correct. Our friends have commented about the uneven gap between the sides of the refrigerator to the cabinet sides. It is noticeable but it is serviceable. Of special note is the final touches to complete the renovation. That being the installation of the crown moldings around the cabinet tops. Jim indicated he thought that we were sent the wrong moldings, I advised him to contact our design expert at Lowes, Kevin Payton. Amazing in that it took an additional three weeks for Jim and his crew to return to install the moldings and finish the job. At the end of the day the moldings were correct and could have been installed three weeks earlier when Jim was there. All that was needed was to confirm with Lowes that we had the correct moldings. Even Lowes had problems in getting Jim's Home Repair to return phone calls on this item. Finally three weeks later our kitchen is complete. There were other small items of which I won't go into, but overall the work done by Jim's Home Repair was adequate. The term and quot;minimalistand quot; is the description of Jim's Home Repair. Funny thing, we were never given a phone number for Jim's, hence we directed our inquiries to Lowes.

Overall, the experiece with Lowes was very pleasurable and they did what they said they would do. They went above and beyond to provide a renovation over anything they had control over. I would recommend Lowes and especially Kevin Payton as your kitchen design expert. We think if we were going to have another renovation through Lowes we would ask for another contractor other than Jim's Home Repair. Seems like Jim just couldn't wait to get out of my kitchen and begin another project somewhere else.

Plumbing
We drove to Lowes to get the toilet, bought it and brought it back to the house. When he got to the house the handle on the toilet was broken. They told us to bring the handle in and they would replace it. They told the plumber to take a handle off another toilet in a different box. They were different style handles and the plumber questioned whether it would work with our toilet or not. She assured him that it would work. After we got back home, we discovered the handle would not fit to the toilet we purchased. The plumber ended up having to take the whole toilet tank back and exchange it. It was no cost to Lowe's, but I am paying this plumber by the hour and it has ended up being unnecessarily excessive due to their poor service. It ends up being over a five hour cost to me for a job that should have taken under two hours.

Doors
It was obvious after calling back that Theresa could have simply asked another associate about availability of their installation crew- instead of pretending that she was going to call me back. As trivial as it may seem, I believe my initial experience with them would set the foreground of the frustration to come, only worse- because they would have already had my credit card number. Another point- while we were still in the store and chose the door we wanted- there were 2 or 3 associates in the area by the storm doors when my husband and I started to carry the door. 2 of the associates were busy helping another customer look through a design book (!) to realize that we needed help. Finally as we were nearing the front of the store- I saw 3 associates exiting an aisle and called for their attention. 2 of those 3 kept walking away but one of them stopped to help us and brought us a cart! I certainly would not recommend Lowes to anybody.

They were very friendly and helpful. They even helped us load the mower in the car, by taking it out of the box. We had them install two screen doors for us. The first time, they did a great job and there were some difficulties, but it ended up working out OK.

This was the first time we had used their services. It went pretty well. The guy who gave the estimate was very helpful. They had delivered the playground on Sunday and assembled it on Monday. Any issues that came up they took care of. A screw came out on the door and they came back out and repaired it.

We used to always shop at the Home Depot on Metcalf, but since the new Lowe's opened in Roeland Park, we have started shopping there. The store is cleaner, has better lighting and most importantly, you can find the employees! We've actually been able to find someone and ask questions, which has not been our experience lately at Home Depot. Lowe's has my vote for best big home improvement store.
