The price kept us from utilizing them. They were $30,000-$40,000 more than other contract bids we solicited. They are a great outfit for the upper end homes, but found the price too high for recouping much of the cost should we sell.
Only small concern I had was the designer had to be reminded several times of detail we were looking for in the proposal. That was a bit disappointed.
Overall this is a high quality construction company who likes you to know in advance all of the details of the work they will do, which is very helpful when you undergo a project.
The whole ALH team was great to work with. Owner Allen clearly knows his stuff and is a perfectionist. Rob who handles scheduling and day-to-day project management was on top of the seemingly thousands of details. Our lead carpenter, Jim, was the best. Beyond being a great craftsman and also a bit of a perfectionist (in a good way), our two-year old really took to him. In a project this size, it does sometimes feel like the contractor moves in with you so having people you want to be in your house and around your family is more important than money.
ALH did a great job of managing a long list of sub-contractors and a few technical and design challenges -- this was the equivalent almost of building a new house (both in cost and size). ALH's ability to organize everything was a huge weight off of our shoulders. Moreover, their attention to detail meant that it was a rare case where we had to point out something we were unhappy about. In fact, more than once, we thought something was fine and ALH would re-do it or have the sub-contractor re-do it because it was not quite up to their standards.
ALH's attention to detail shows and we love the final result. They came in on time and very close to the original budget (not including all of the changes we kept making -- but that was our own fault!).
We have a couple of other somewhat large projects planned for the future and ALH is the only contractor we will consider.
My first meeting was with owner, Allen. He listened carefully, then made suggestions that were neither too plain nor too elaborate--pretty much the balance I told him I was seeking.
Once some general concepts were agreed upon, he took several days to prepare a very detailed proposal. It laid out exactly what he proposed to do and it showed cost by line item. The proposal not only detailed work that definitely would be done, it alerted me to potential areas of unexpected expense. For example, there was a hidden area that once exposed by tear-out might have revealed some suspected rot. Fortunately, there was no rot, nor any other surprises, but I appreciated the effort to warn me of potential unknowns.
Once Allen and I modified and agreed on the proposal, construction began right on time.
Most of the work was done by lead carpenter, Jim. He was considerate and dependable. If we'd agreed that he would start at 7am, he was in the driveway at 6:55 and ringing the doorbell at 7:03. He communicated very well about what would happen when, and he cleaned up fastidiously at the end of each day. He was extremely conscientious about the quality of his work, which was excellent.
Communication and organization was also excellent. In addition to the communication I received on-site, I regularly got emails and calls from Rob at ALH's office reminding me of any meetings and explaining any scheduling changes. Although there were two major snow storms during the project, Rob managed to juggle things around with his own crew and several vendors and very nearly kept to the original schedule. Never once did I have trouble getting a phone call returned or a question answered.
There were some problems on the project, although none of them were ALH's fault. But even though ALH hadn't caused any of the problems, they took the lead in getting them resolved. For example, I had bought a dishwasher that was defective out-of-the-box. It couldn't be installed as scheduled, potentially delaying some remaining work. Even though ALH played no part in my purchase of this dishwasher, they volunteered to call the seller and spent considerable time insisting on immediate warranty repairs.
ALH gave me good ideas, did very good work, caused no major surprises, and they were professional. I would use them again.
