It turned out really well and I am getting ready to use them again. They were there, pretty much, for six or seven months last year. We started off with a small amount of work and I worked really well with him. His prices were good. He showed up on time and did a great job on cleanup. He did everything he said he would. I did not have to call him back to do touch up because we did a walk-through when it was all done. I was just very happy with him. I work in insurance claims and I have an estimating program so I checked his pricing and he was right where he should be. He was very personable. Anytime I would text or call him I got an immediate response. I know a lot about construction so he and I did really well. He always treated me very professional.
"I'd like to point out that 'The kitchen turned out well' as stated by this customer. Not mentioned at all by the complaint is that the kitchen plan was altered by the addition of an 8'x8' walk-in pantry that was added after the plans came. It was a significant cost and time increase, as one should expect. I had to modify cabinets to fit things in as changes continued to be made. This is a more than 300 square foot kitchen we're talking about. They added more work to be done. It's impossible to stick to a schedule when changes are made that take significantly more time to accomplish. Also the original flooring they wanted became unavailable from the dealer so the process of finding what they wanted started all over again. Alternate flooring had to be ordered which took additional time. Same routine for the carpeted areas. Additional special-order carpet of a different selection takes time to get. One would come during the day and say one thing then the other at the end of the day and tell me something different. After a few experiences with that I would have to check with both about everything. Time consuming. Extras are due to be paid as the job progresses not at the end of the job. I wasn't paid the final amount due. There was always some miniscule reason why payment had to be put off. Yes you will get complaints from me after asking several times and being put off again and again. The floor I contracted to do was supposed to be a floating floor. That means unattached to the sub-floor. The customer insisted we fasten the floor down, which we did. Gluing is messy and time consuming, I will not use glue. We tried several methods to fasten the floor down. The recommended staples do not work well. Tiny brad nail were used instead. It is not good to use 2 different substrates to secure flooring to: We discovered a 4' wide 3" deep concrete slab that ran for approximately 30' which the tile had been laid on. After the tile was removed we realized the concrete could not be used as a support for the floor. We removed it and painstakingly installed new lumber supports to even the floor out and make it level again because the weight of the old concrete had caused a very noticeable dip in the floor. Afterward we could start with a smooth level surface to put the new flooring on, which is responsible remodeling. That cost was $1800. A reasonable price for 4 men for 2 days plus materials costs for which I was never paid. Unknown conditions or hidden damage is not covered by any contract by anyone. When extra costs are incurred they have to be paid for. I will not pay for your remodeling. There is nothing written anywhere that says I will complete your remodeling at all cost and personal expense or without being appropriately compensated. The floor was done in 2 patterns, both recommended by the manufacturer. As for the statement: "As of now we have another flooring company bidding us out on ripping up most of the flooring at a major cost to us. Despite having paid more than the original contract we will be forced to spend another 5-8 thousand dollars to have them redone." It's been almost a year. Not a word has been said to me about this. Not a call, not a letter, not an attorney, nothing. If I was out $8000 I'd seek damages in a courtroom. Still nothing. Some people don't want to pay, that's all there is to it."
When the work started he let us know what was going on and who would be in the house each day. At the end of the day he would make sure the work site was as clean and safe as could be expected. Right after the work started and the wall was removed, we decided we did not want to use the existing cabinets and wanted to redo the entire kitchen. We really liked IKEA cabinets but trying to find a installer that wanted to work with them was challenging for us. Fortunately Charlie likes building and installing IKEA kitchens, and has installed many prior.
He gave us a the price for the extra work (which was still a very fair price) and had no problem adding it onto the job. One of the best things about IKEA kitchens is the ability to make changes to get it just the way you want it. During the cabinet installation process we had a few changes that required work to be redone. Charlie was always understanding with the changes. He was very fair with the price and would let us know if a change would add to the cost. He also made suggestions when he thought something would look or function better.
At the end of the project we love our new space and the finished product looks amazing. Charlie did an excellent job and we will consider him for any future projects.
He did an awesome job fixing up our area and working around unexpected challenges. Accommodated changes during the project without a problem. Quality was top notch and he suggested improvements or solutions we hadn't thought of.
We will use Charlie again for future projects, he did an awesome job and is great person as well!
Probably the most important issue that he recognized and corrected was the shotty electrical work the previous owners had done.
Charlie does not necessarily finish the basement he gets everything ready for all of the finishes that you buy. This includes counter tops, appliances, lighting, tile, etc. That saved us a lot of money and allowed us to really personalize the space.
We are very happy with the way everything turned out and will recommend him to anyone.
In any remodeling project once you dig in there are things that one discovers that need to be taken care of that weren't anticipated. He was very reasonable in his charges for any of those extras. I highly recommend him.
"[remove member name], I wanted to thank you for nominating me to Angie's List. I didn't do anything with it for some time but than got more good reviews, now running an ad that I think will do well. I wouldn't have this ability were it not for your help. - Much appreciated. Charlie"
