When last minute changes were requested, he and his team were nothing but receptive. Additionally, Nick went the extra mile by discussing these changes in detail to ensure all items/scenarios were accounted for.
Overall, my wife and I were extremely pleased with the quality of work they completed. We won't have to bother looking around for contractors for any future projects after our experience with KC Home Solutions, LLC! Highly recommended!
It went extremely well and in a mostly timely manner. The entrance stairs in particular were designed for a grand entrance. I could not be more pleased.
Their subcontractors did excellent work. They offered good suggestions along the way, and made adjustments as needed. The only cost overruns were in materials because, in some cases, we opted for the nicer stuff. The tile work was particularly challenging, and included heated tile floors and a tiled shower ceiling. They must have been pleased as well. Pictures of the finished project appeared on their website.
All of their workers were punctual and neat, "closing up shop" at the end of the day with work spaces in good order. On Friday afternoons they went above and beyond to straighten things up, going so far as to hose off the walkway and driveway and even sweep the street of drywall and ceiling texture droppings!! During the renovation process, if project manager Nick saw something amiss he called workers to return to fix it to his satisfaction! They finished close to the estimated schedule. The final task, the shower glass installation, was held up for a few days because of a delay in a hardware shipment.
Since my husband is very handy and capable, we RARELY "hire it done" having done so only once before and it did not turn out to our satisfaction. We were wary of hiring out another bathroom renovation but we've been beyond pleased with the result, and have shared the name of KC Home Solutions with so many people without reservation!!
By the way, no hulking industrial-sized dumpster was left onsite during the demolition process. They parked a trailer in the driveway for a couple of days, then drove it away with the stuff!
Nick Shepherd, the owner, communicates every step of the project and explains different solutions and then lets the homeowner decide what to do. He believes in the art of the possible rather than telling you how it HAS to be done. He wants the end product to be one that you are proud of and one that you can enjoy for many years to come.
His company did EVERYTHING for us. New windows, doors, bathrooms, finished basement, hardwood floors and refinished kitchen cabinets, counter-top and backsplash. We went on the HOUZZ website and chose designs that appealed to us. KC Home Solutions made it happen.
One VERY common experience is being "nickeled and dimed" to death. It is impossible to know everything that will come up in a renovation and when the unexpected comes up - Nick figures out a way to fix the problem and contain costs.
Have you ever had workers in your home that made you feel like you should not be around them? NOT ONE TIME did any of Nick's guys behave this way but rather always greeted us and welcomed our comments and suggestions.
During the renovation, our furnace broke and had to be fixed. Rather than complaining - they jumped in and fixed it at a reasonable cost.
Nick is a PRINCE of a fellow and surrounds himself with people like him. You will not be disappointed with their workmanship, craftsmanship and "can-do attitude." I have never gone through such a pleasant contracting experience in 60 years!
Working with KC Home Solutions and owner Nick Shepard was a great experience. I had used them previously for work on rental properties, and for "handyman" services on my home, so I was expecting things to go well. But they went even better than I expected in transforming my bathroom that was stuck in the 90's. Here are some of the details:
1. Schedule -- Work was scheduled to start on Feb 7 (which it did), and run thru Feb 25. Virtually all the work was completed in this time frame -- and all except the installation of our new shower door was completed by Feb 28. I was expecting more slippage than this, but was very happy. Shower door is scheduled for March 6.
2. "I'm Not Sure What I Want..." -- I had gotten some design ideas from Houzz and Pinterest, and knew I wanted a granite vanity, new tile floor, shower and tub surround, but making selections seemed like a daunting task. And then there were the ideas that I wasn't sure were practical -- like building a cabinet with doors under a recessed nook, a recessed shelf in the shower, euro shower door, and heated tile floor. Nick was very helpful in determining what was feasible and gave my husband and I realistic budget estimates so we could decide. In terms of deciding among all the different granite and tile choices, he has a terrific granite vendor that showed us several possibilities and the choice was pretty easy. With the granite selected, we then moved on to tile at Premier Tile in Lenexa. They were good at listening to my ideas and coming up with possibilities that kept our budget in mind. Nick also provided his thoughts on what looked good together.
3. Quality -- The KC Home Solutions crew handled the 1-day demo, and also all the plumbing and finishing touches at the end (such as new pulls, new electrical switches, touch up painting and grouting, new vent covers, and clean up). Sub-contractors were used for the granite countertop, tile setting for the floor, tub surround and shower, painting, and electrical. Nick acted as the project manager throughout, and he was in frequent communication with the subs as well as me by phone and text. I always knew who was coming and when. All of the crews were very professional, punctual and friendly. I am so impressed with the tile-setting -- it looks amazing. And the painters spent a lot of time on prep (the way painters used to do) and I am so pleased with the results.
4. Budget -- Before the project started, I was hoping to spend about $10k, and ended up spending about $14k to get what I wanted, and that includes the updated fireplace in our family room, and painting of master bedroom and master walk-in closet. A few years ago, we updated our kitchen, and to this day I regret not spending the extra money for granite countertops. Nick's estimate gave me several options where I could have saved (no built-in cabinet, no heated floor, sliding shower doors instead of the "euro" design) but I chose to have no regrets this time. We won't live in this house forever, but we're going to enjoy it now!
5. Customer Service -- I touched on this above, but everyone I worked with during this process was doing their best to ensure a happy customer. From dealing with our overly friendly dog, to cleaning up each day (the master bedroom was usable every night), to laying protective plastic/paper on our carpet and stairs, every single person was a pleasure to deal with and a master of his craft.
They told me it would take about 4-5 weeks to complete and they were in complete about a week early. Each day they were very receptive to our schedule and the fact that we were still living in the home while they were working on the basement. Also, they left the job site very clean and picked up each day they left so we could walk down to see the progress. I got weekly updates of the following weeks plans and progress as well as my biggest concern of staying on budget and on time. After everything was done we did stay on budget and were complete early. The best part is that all the work matches the upstairs areas that were built the previous year so you would not know the difference of when this work was done. I would highly recommend them for any home remodeling project.
Derrick was the painter and he did outstanding work. There was absolutely no mess to clean up and the edges are so clean. He also covered my entire space (6-7 rooms + hallways) in less than 3 days. He worked quickly but definitely did not sacrifice quality.
I could not be happier with my decision to use this company. I have hired other painters to do work on my house in the past and I expected similar service. KC Home Solutions blew me out of the water. They truly go above and beyond for their customers. They were happy to work outside of my normal office hours, on a holiday weekend, so I would not lose any work days due to the job being done. Trent was great at communicating before, during and after the job and was available 24/7 to answer questions.
For this particular job, KC Home Solutions was the most affordable quote I received. However, I would 100% recommend them to others even if they were not the "cheapest." The company prides themselves on doing great work and great customer service and that can be hard to find.
I have since hired KC Home Solutions to do work at my home as well.
This was actually my third experience with KC Home Solutions. I had worked with them in 2012 after purchasing a couple of single family homes to rent. The purchase inspections had turned up a host of issues, but I also used them to improve the properties by installing a tile floor in a master bath, new ceiling fans, bathroom vanity lights, knobs and pulls, a new fence, window well cover, and 2" window blinds. The quality of their work and been great and they are very good communicators -- I always knew where things stood as far as timing and budget. Their prices are reasonable, and I will use them again.
