The crew was apologetic but should have paid closer attention to what they were doing to prevent this from ever occurring in the first place. Their machine operator destroyed our sprinkler system and damaged our water main. The incident occurred in the late afternoon and it was soon dark, so any chance of repairing it that night was out of the question. I spent the night without water and had a plumber come first thing in the morning (fortunately I have a service agreement with the plumber, so got immediate attention). The plumber spent several hours repairing the water main, replacing the damaged regulator and pressure valve. By afternoon the next day, water was again reaching the house. In the meantime, the excavation crew had placed a "concrete blanket" over the large hole (almost 5' deep and near as long across) to prevent the pipes from freezing in the cold weather that is forecast. Update The crew came by the following day and did a reasonably good job filling in the hole and covering it. The company also made good on their promise to reimburse me for my out-of-pocket expenses for the plumbing repairs. They took responsibility for their work and I feel like I was treated fairly.
