I purchased my 2006 Sedona brand new, at Shawnee Mission Kia, back in August of 2006. On 30 May of this year, I took the car in to get a nasty vibration noise taken care of. The car is still under the 100,000 mile power train warranty from Kia, and extended warranty as well. The vibration was covered under warranty.
Jim Moore called me after a few hours and told me everything that needed done. I told him that the $750.00 quote was fine, and to get it taken care of. He called me and told me to pick the car up. On 1 June, I picked it up, paid for the service and drove out of the lot. The engine sounded a little loud to me on acceleration, but I figured the new Flex Plate may be causing the sound. I didn't think much of it. I wasn't a BAD sound really.
When I stopped for gas, I checked the fluids. I ALWAYS do this. It's a habit from my long military career, and I'll do it for the rest of my life! Anyway, when I checked the motor oil, there was NOTHING on the dip-stick! Not a single drop. How can a dealership let a car out of the shop, after all of that work, AND a 20 point inspection, without re-filling the oil? In fact, I have to question why they ever drained the oil. There was absolutely NO REASON to drain any oil from the engine.
The car developed a flashing Check Engine light. I took the car back, and told Jim about the issue, AND about the oil problem that I'd noticed the previous day. He assured me that he'd take care of me. A few days later, Jim called me back and explained that my engine was sludged up and the warranty would not cover the repair to the damaged engine. The engine, by the way, IS SEIZED UP now. If the engine was badly sludged, it should have been reported to me when the valve covers were pulled from the engine, and BEFORE I spent $750.00 on unnecessary repairs (especially new spark plugs on a sludged motor???) Yet, not a word was said to me when I picked up the car the first time.
I've taken the valve covers off, and looked for myself. It had some minor sludge from all of the start and stop driving we do in Kansas City, but nothing that would come close to seizing the engine. This catastrophic engine failure was due to driving the car without oil. The car has never been driven without oil until a professional mechanic from Shawnee Mission Kia sent my car out of the shop with a nearly empty crank case.
Jim recommended I trade the car in...Go Figure!
I am having a new engine installed next week, by another (actually reputable) shop here in the KC area. I am also seeking legal counsel regarding this matter. I strongly recommend you take your Kia to a different dealership to have it serviced. I do want to mention that Jim Moore is a very nice guy. His loyalty is, however, to his company, and that company is the problem.
