We called Jerry and Cyndia to refinish our golden oak kitchen cabinets. Jerry came to the house with sample doors and even told us we could go to a cabinet shop and pick out anything we liked and that they could duplicate it. We gave him the down payment and he told us to remove all the doors and drawers from the cabinets and he would come by and pick them up. He also told us that we didn't need to label the doors (first HUGE mistake). When he returned we showed him the sample of what we would like to do which he responded by telling us that it was impossible and that we could only go to a darker shade of what we had. Completely different story from his sales pitch. We went ahead with the darker shade since that is what we wanted anyways and Jerry began the job of refinishing the cabinet bases while Cyndia did the doors at their shop. When my wife and I got home from work the day Jerry began we were floored by the mess Jerry had made of of our kitchen cabinet bases and when we got to see the doors they were not much better. They apparently tried to smear some form of gel stain over top of the existing finish resulting in an uneven finish with brush strokes everywhere. It looked as if my two year old had found the black watercolors. The quality of work was so horrible and they were obviously going to be of no use so I made them the offer that if they just refunded my money I would clean up the mess and hire someone else to fix it. Jerry refused and threatened to sue us for breach of contract for not letting them finish the job. After much discussion I offered then the opportunity to correct the problem. After three weeks we unfortunately reached a point were they just wasn't much progress, it was apparent they weren't going to get it right, and my wife and I need our kitchen back. At this point we had no choice but to cut our losses and get them out of there. To their credit they did offer to paint our cabinets they ruined for us but unfortunately this was not what we were looking for and the sample they gave us looked like it had been sprayed from a can. We have began the process of hiring someone else to do the work and have been informed that the oak cabinets are indeed ruined and will have to be painted over. We are currently $4,000 in the hole and worse off then the day we started our kitchen remodel thanks to Kitchen & Cabinet Makeover (A.K.A Focal Point KC). Jerry has no shortage of ego and is the type to treat you as if your the idiot and everything is your fault. Do yourself a favor and just find someone else. After speaking with other contractors this seems to be their reputation and have even had to change their name from Focal Point KC to the current name Kitchen & Cabinet Makeover because of similar issues. I would be glad to send pictures of their work and samples of their paint or better yet, contact me at
[email protected] and come by and see it for yourself.
