Hiring KC Roofcare was a mistake. I do not speak Spanish and only one of the crew spoke some English and he was not always at my home when the work was being done. I was assured that plywood would be leaned against the house to cover my tender spring plants and instead, the crew threw tarps over them and broke off the new growth. When I objected and asked them to use the plywood that they brought along for that purpose, they threatened to leave. Looking back, how I wish now I had let them go! The roof was finished in early June. Then, on June 18 at 3 am, a storm came through and I heard a loud crash in my kitchen downstairs. Gallons of water were pouring through my light box, the screen shattered, falling on top of glass art objects on my kitchen island and they fell to the floor and broke. I was certain a section of the roof had blown off from the extent of the rain gushing in. I was alone in the house and tried as rapidly as I could to soak up the water from my wood floor. The next morning I called the roofer. It took TWELVE hours for them to come over and look at the roof, which was not missing any shingles after all. Several planks in my wood floor were water damaged and large brown water spots appeared on my ceiling. I was told that the crew did not caulk in the valley of the roof over my kitchen and this damage was due to their negligence. It was practically dark when they arrived to look at it and they used an ugly brown caulking that looked horrible. Then, they left it that way for weeks until I called back and complained. At that point, I was told it was only intended to be a temporary repair. Nice of them to let me know that and just leave me hanging, I thought. The crew felt 'badly' about the interior damage, so they gave KC Roofcare a $100 bill to give me to cover the materials. Of course, labor to repair the ceiling, replace the broken screen and glass objects, and repair several water-logged wood floor planks would be hundreds more dollars that they would not pay for. My insurance deductible was too high to cover the damage. Eventually, they returned to do the permanent repair. Then, on August 18, another overnight storm blew through. The flashing around the skylight in my bedroom was installed improperly and more water leaked through the roof & damaged my ceiling, leaving large, brown water spots on either side of the skylight. Again, I was not put on the top of their list for warranty repair. When they came to look at the skylight, again I was told that the crew did not use an approved flashing technique and their negligence was responsible for my damage. And, again, I am stuck with the repair cost. I was told that this was not the same crew that had installed the first roof on my home the year before and that they had come recommended to KC Roofcare, but that the company did not bother to inspect any of their work in person. Ironically, as part of the sales pitch, I was told repeatedly by KC Roofcare that "9 out of 10 roofs are installed incorrectly". Had I known KC Roofcare was not checking their (nomadic) crews' work prior to subbing to them, I would never have allowed them to install a 2nd roof. Nearly every time I called Richard Tooley with KC Roofcare, he did not answer the call. Most of the time he didn't even return my call and I had to e-mail him to get a response. Rarely was he "in town" and thus available to be on site to supervise the job. Avoid this company and instead choose someone on Angie's List with an A grade - someone who is responsive and can be trusted to perform quality work. I have little faith in the quality of the workmanship performed and worry that the two roof leaks I have had so far will turn into three, four, or five over time, and I do not relish the thought of having to deal with KC Roofcare for warranty service. My advice: ask your roofer who will actually perform the work, how long the roofer has known them/worked with them, and if the roofer has seen/inspected their work. Also ask if all crew members are fluent in English. Insist that the roofing job is inspected immediately by an experienced supervisor, ask who that supervisor will be, and if he/she will be in town and available to you as the customer.
Description of Work: I hired KC Roofcare to install a new roof in August 2010. After a hailstorm in April of 2011, I hired them again to replace the roof a 2nd time and to replace the gutters.
