The workers came in and installed the counter tops and tile in a timely manner. There was a bit of dust afterwords which I think is to be expected for a remodel of this sort but when all was said and done, it looks great.
I will point out that originally we ordered a contrast color for the island (different from the counters). On the first day they brought the Island counter tops in the same color as the counters. This was only a slight inconvenience. They immediately owned the problem and made it right by expediting the new island counter tops and installing them on the following morning. They definetly made it right in a very short time.
All in all, my wife and I are very happy with the new countertops and back splash and would definitely recommend KGM to our friends and family.
The tear-out guy became impatient when removing the old tile backsplash, and he ended up tearing out most of the sheetrock with it. We had considered removing the old backsplash ourselves, but we thought the pros would do a better job of doing it without damaging the wall. NOT. I walked into the kitchen and was shocked to see huge holes, and one wall was almost entirely gone. He said the tile guy would install new sheetrock and fix everything.
The countertops and sink looked good, and the tile guy came right after the countertop installers were finished. He replaced some of the sheetrock, but there were still some large holes that he didn't bother to fix. He just stuffed a bunch of drywall mud in the holes and stuck some mesh over it, and then put the tile right over that, before it was dry enough to be stable. We didn't know he was doing this at the time. That night, we noticed that the tile didn't look flat...it was sinking back into the wall. So we pulled off a few tiles, and that drywall mud in the hole was still wet (it was way too thick) and the mesh and tile were sinking into it. We repaired the wall ourselves with a new piece of sheetrock and mud, and stuck the tile back on when it was dry. The tile guy was coming back the next day to do the grout, but at this point we didn't trust his workmanship enough to ask him to fix the wall, so we did it ourselves. It seemed he thought that we wouldn't notice his shoddy workmanship if he covered it all up with the tile. He also removed his spacers before the adhesive was dry, and several of the tiles slid down and became crooked. We also fixed those ourselves. We've done enough home improvements that we know we can't expect absolute perfection, but this was really bad. He did an ok job of grouting, but all the caulk had cracks along the bottom edge of the tile where it meets the countertop. It's probably because the granite countertops are so heavy that they settled a little bit in the next few days after they were installed. They should have expected that, and should have waited to put in the caulk, or just left it for us to do. They were in too much of a hurry to finish everything. We tried putting another bead of caulk over it and smoothed it in, but the cracks just spread into the new caulk. We'll have to scrape it all out and do it over. It is not something we feel we should have to do, but at this point we don't want their tile guy to come back and do us any more favors.
Overall, I would say the granite installers did a good job. The semi-bullnose edges and sink cutouts were nicely done, and the one seam is almost invisible. However, the tile installer was rushed, sloppy and unprofessional. I'd use Kansas Granite Mart again, but not for tile. You'd be better off to get that somewhere else. You also need to watch them very carefully when they figure up the bill, compared to the quote. The granite prices were good, but they made up for it with other charges and overpriced tile installation.
Now the bad: This is not a no-hassle buying experience. You can get a great price, but you've really got to watch these guys. They are incredibly disorganized, their salespeople are, frankly, idiots, and they're rude and try to make you feel unreasonable when you insist that they honor their bargain.
The estimator had to make a second trip out because they mis-measured the first time. Then, the quote was constantly in flux. We were quoted a price of 39.99 on two different occasions, but the revised quote showed 45.99. Had to rework the quote several times because they couldn't seem to get their act together.
They told me I'd be able to pick out our slab, but they never scheduled a time, so I had to take the initiative to do that. Then, when we went to pick out our slab, they tried to limit us to arranging our pieces on the upper half of one slab because the bottom half was already sold. Ridiculous. We weren't quoted remnant pricing, and they were essentially trying to sell us a remnant by limiting us to the upper half. We didn't expect to cut from all different areas of the slab and create a bunch of waste - you've got to minimize waste - but we did expect to be able to choose our area from a complete slab. We finally got them to back down on that.
Then, they tried to jack the price up again by adding a half-bullnose edge, even though it was already listed on the quote, and even though I had already put down a 50% deposit on the previously-quoted price. I insisted on them honoring the quoted total price, which was already a bit higher than expected due to the change from 39.99 to 45.99.
In summary, I would consider buying from KGM again just because the price is so good and I'm happy with the end result, but it took real work to hold them to their bargain. This is not a stress-free buying experience, so be warned, and good luck!
