The installation went quickly and smoothly and the installers returned several days later to clear up some small problems. Their goal was to please me which they did. I am very happy with my new countertop and I certainly would hire Canaan Stone Works again. Canaan should be proud of each of their employees.

2. I am in the owner's son's territory so he came and measured everything and later emailed me a quote. I was alarmed. Oh, the price was great but the details were so bad... a grossly wrong measurement for one section in the kitchen, he'd approved of me using several edges (styles) on my island (bad idea that was corrected later by another employee, thankfully), he'd included a sink we'd never discussed let alone ordered, he forgot the window ledge, he'd indicated a third wall on a corner bathroom sink, failed to specify that both the counter-tops removal was included in price (at bottom of page it said counter top removal was NOT included unless specified, so I had to double check that.), he indicated I would have a 3-hole faucet in the bathroom (wrong) and indicated no holes in the kitchen (later learned that the holes aren't drilled until after installation and have no bearing on price anyhow), etc. I was also not impressed that he didn't know if under-mounted porcelain cast iron sinks EXISTED. This is his area of expertise? Well, they do exist, and that's what we wanted, and so I ordered them myself, through Lowe's.
Anyhow, I got all the corrections made that I noticed, including taking the sink OFF and adding the very narrow, small window ledge, and the price went UP a lot on the re-quote? Well, based on other Angie's List good reviews, I figured this was just the quote not the actual work... so I nervously told him if he'd put the price back where it had been, we'd go ahead with the job.
3. the template guy did a fantastic job, everything fits beautifully. He's the one who told me not to have more than one edge style on my island, which was good advice. He caught all the errors from the quote that I hadn't.
4. The installation guy... well, he seemed in quite a hurry tearing stuff out, made me so nervous, like a demolition job. A couple chipped bathroom wall tiles that we had to work around later. But he sure knew what he was doing to get the sinks installed, and everything fits great, level, etc. He then measured for the back-splashes which I'd been told would be installed separately, later. That was OK by me.
5. The next day their independent plumber contractor guys came in, they were late, so they sent 2 guys to speed things up. The faucets were installed well but we did have water squirting all over at one short, frantic moment. (we have water lines to the frig, and an old filter that we don't use anymore, etc. so it was a little complicated.)
6. Several days later the back-splashes came, and there had been a miscommunication on the kitchen measurements so they had to be taken back and returned a couple days later for installation. The bathroom is where the tile was chipped (we'd talked about placing the back-splash OVER the tile which would have covered the chips, but my husband said no, we'd re-cut the tile on the wall and do it right. So we did that ourselves. It was good I was there to help lift the heavy long piece in the kitchen behind the faucet. Frankly, I think they should have gotten the back-splash installed BEFORE the plumbers came, to avoid risk of scratching the shiny new faucet! But this time it fit well. Very nice. They wanted to silicone both the lower joint (yes, please) and the top space between the grouted tile and the top of the back-splash - but we wanted grout. They don't do grout work (they say they can't carry all the colors of grout that are out there... I feel they should bring color sample charts for the owner to select from and offer grouting or colored caulking as an option... just include it in the quote price. But we will be doing that ourselves, eventually.
7. Then, the 1-year sealer they have on is HORRIBLE! I couldn't leave moisture on it for 15 seconds and it was soaking in, causing dark spots - they all dried eventually, but if that's chicken juice, or butter soaking in, that's NOT acceptable! So I gingerly worked in my kitchen, until at the last visit from a Canaan employee I was told that I should have been offered their manufacturer-guaranteed 15-year finish (I would have taken that in a heartbeat!). So I called and told them I needed that put on and I was immediately scheduled in one morning (just a 15-minute job) and whew, what a difference!!!! They did not charge me for the 15-yr finish. They just put it on, no questions asked.
Now I love my granite! It is beautiful, I feel free to use my kitchen freely without worry, etc. Note: the guy at Lowe's told me they couldn't even get the granite for the price that Canaan installed it. So for the price, and the end results I am very satisfied, but it was nerve-wracking and frustrating from the get-go. I had to clear my kitchen 6 times, total from quote measuring to final sealer.
I'd say do your homework well, and stay on top of every detail. I believe the company will stand by their work and they have some outstanding employees. However, I'm sure my husband would not use them again; he's the one who had to cut the bathroom tiles and still has grout work to do. But if we'd gone elsewhere I'm sure we'd have paid a whole lot more and the end results would be about the same. I may not have been able to afford granite after all? So, pick your battles.
The crew from Canaan Stone Works were professional and cleaned up after themselves. I was educated on taking care of the granite, what could be set on the stone and things I wanted to avoid. While I know they are there, you can hardly see where they had to put seams in the counter tops.
My new countertops look beautiful and Canaan Stone Works did such a great job that they will be the company I call when I am ready to redo my bathrooms.
Thanks Jerry, you're terrific!
