Auto Service
$7,129
Our vehicle was towed to Gardner Auto body on October 7, 2011.  At that time we were told that it would take 2 weeks to replace the motor.  At this time we explained to Gardner Auto body that we had to make an emergency trip to North Carolina to pick up our daughter and help transport her and her things to California.  We were assured that when the vehicle was returned to us that it would be ready for the trip, however, when the vehicle was returned to us, the vehicle needed additional repairs and in fact it was not safe to drive.

The cost of a replacement motor was $1,890.00/  The labor cost was $1,778.00.  That is a total of $3,668.00.  The total cost for all parts and work done was $7,129.51.  This is a difference of $3,461.51.

This is due to parts replaced and labor done that was not requested.  It is also due to the fact that the parts we were charged for had roughly a 55% mark up.

When we picked up our vehicle on Friday, November 4, 2011, in supposedly drivable condition and checked the final invoice, we discovered that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and needed additional work.  In effect, it needed work on the front suspension, the drive shaft, as well as the brakes were not working properly, and all 4 shocks were worn and in need of replacement.

Upon receiving final receipt for work done, we discovered that the driver's outside mirror had been broken, glued back together, and installed without our knowledge.  At this time we felt we could no longer trust Gardner Auto Body, and therefore, went to a different shop to have the additional work done.

A list of parts and labor not requested by us will be listed below per Gardner Auto body's invoice:
1.  Wiper blades.
2.  New compressor and  clutch kit
3.  Custom tailored resistor ignition wire set.
4.  Autolite double platinum spark plugs.
5.  Neutral safety switch.
6.  Fuel tank removed and replaced.
7.  Fuel tank drained and refilled.
8.  Distributor assembly.
9.  Gas Cap.
10.  AC compressor pig-tail replaced.
11.  Trouble shooting of front turn signals, but not repaired due to electrical problems.

Other things found wrong with the vehicle:
1.  When checked- the motor oil was 1 1/2 quarts low.
2.  Blower motor housing was cracked and broken.

Gardner Auto Body also suggested that the front turn signals were not working due to an electrical problem.  The problem was solved by replacing a light bulb.  We were told that the vehicle was safe to drive for our emergency trip to North Carolina, yet minor work was done unrelated to the motor replacement and necessary repairs were omitted by Gardner Auto Body.  The cost of repairs exceeded our expectations by $3,461.00 and the vehicle was still unsafe to drive.
Response from GARDNER AUTO BODY
"Member called Gardner Auto Body to get a price on a used motor for a 1997 Chevy Blazer. She was debating if she wanted to purchase this vehicle or not. The customer requested the vehicle to be towed into our shop on Oct 7, 2011 at 2:40 pm. The vehicle had been sitting for a long period of time. The customer knew that the repairs to this vehicle would be unknown until it was in running condition. Which meant putting an engine in first and then finding out what else the car may need. The Member knew the re-man engine with a 3 year warranty would be $1890.00 and the labor would be $1778.00 to install the engine plus any additional parts and labor needed to get the vehicle running. The customer paid $2000.00 on her credit card for the order of the engine on 10/12/11. She then paid another $2000.00 on 10/17/11 for the labor. On 10/18/2011 she paid $1500.00 for the extra parts and labor needed as of that day. She paid the remaining balance of $1629.51 the day they picked up the vehicle. The customer was aware of the suspension parts, brake parts and tires needed to bring this vehicle up to road worthy. The customer choose not to replace those items due to the money needed to fix them, which is understandable.. She had already spent so much trying to get it running. But, we can not be held liable for items the car needs. It is not our vehicle. The mirror was our fault and we explained that to the customer. The customer provided 2 junkyard mirrors to replace the mirrors on the car. One of them was dropped during installation and cracked. We replaced the one mirror they brought and glued the other one and put it on for free. The customer was not satisfied with that. We bought them a brand new mirror and the customer refused free installation. The mirror they brought to us was used. We purchased a new mirror for the customer. The customer provided us with wiper arms for the vehicle but they were missing the blades, so the blades were replaced and put on so the vehicle could have working wipers. The a/c compressor and clutch kit was locked up on the blazer and the customer was aware these items needed replaced. New wires and plugs were installed which is common on any reman or used engine and the customer was aware of that. The fuel tank had to be removed drained and replaced with new fuel due to the vehicle sitting for so long and the customer knew that as well. The distributor was missing completely from the blazer and had to be replaced. A/C pigtail needed to be replaced to match the superseded new switch. We tried to diagnose the turn signals but the customer was running out of money and could not afford the tracing of the wiring. When the vehicle left here it was full of oil. The blower motor was not cracked due to us. If the customer was so dissatisfied with the repairs why have they waited 2 months to say anything and never once said anything to us. The customer was fully aware of all the charges. The customer paid in 4 different installments to take care of the extra parts and labor needed. 3-year warranty on the reman engine, which is stated on their invoice. We have been in business for over 30 years and have always stood behind our work and always will."
