Just as I had wanted and they answered by questions so that I could take care of one of the problems myself.

I have requested a refund from the owner Derek Brandt, and his secretary basically told me no refunds. Sounds like the new owner of 2 years is trying to run this business into the ground. Jim Russell would not be proud.

It's on a service contract. They're coming tomorrow. I think they left a piece off of the upstairs furnaces in the attic. They just disconnected the slew and didn't put it back on for some reason.

After almost thirteen years of service, our gas water heater was showing signs of "giving up the ghost".  Not wanting to wait until it was an emergency installation and having previously used this service provided for assorted plumbing, heating and air conditioning needs, I contacted their office on Wednesday 9/18 and requested a quote.  Jim Russell called the next morning, provided the quote and indicated that he could probably do the installation the next morning.
To my surprise, within three hours after our phone conversation Jim pulled up in my drive with the new Bradford White water heater.  (He explained that he was "going to Carmel to pick up some other equipment anyway".)  Within two hours, he and his assistant had removed the old water heater--not an easy task considering the tight location involved--and installed the new one. They not only clean up their own mess but left that area of my garage in better shape than it was in before they started their work.

Dan came and honestly told us that our toilets could be replaced for less money than to have them fixed and recommended what this company uses - Kohler! I love my new toilets and Dan is an exceptional employee and very, very kind. I really like this company and will use them forever!!!

Continuing from #14, I turned my A/C on on May 15th and had no air.  The unit outside was blowing cold air so I knew there was little coolant in the system. I called J.R. H&C and asked the receptionist if she would have Derrick, the new owner, call me about the problem.  She said, “Well, some of these units just have to be recharged every year!” She said she would have him contact me. After not receiving a call that day, I called back the next day and asked again if she would have him contact me. This was Friday, and again no call from anyone.  About 4 pm on Friday I called a third time and no one answered so I left a message on Jim Russell’s voice mail and explained the situation.  It is now mid-day on Tuesday, the 21st, and I have still not received a call back.  I finally contacted another repair service and they came to my home last night, found the leak, and made the proper repair and refill – cost $350. As a small business owner myself, I don’t understand this type of customer service. Zionsville is a relatively small community and word of this type of behavior will certainly get around.  How can you build a business, or maintain and existing business, with such deplorable customer service.

"I would first like to apologize to (removed member name) for the fact that he didn’t get a call back from me. We are a small company that is growing rapidly and I only have two A/C technicians, including myself. Our work load has nearly doubled since last year and we are working with the same amount of technicians. I wish I could get to every call that came into my office, but this year it simply hasn’t been possible. I am currently trying to purchase vans and hire technicians to help with the increased work load, but it is difficult to do from a service truck every day. However, I explained to (removed member name) last year that the leak I repaired might not be the only leak in the system as it had frozen in the past. As ice breaks up our roads it has an equal affect on copper/aluminum coils in a refrigeration system. There are a few leak test procedures we could try but they were more costly and the system was already 15 years old, thus the decision was made to charge it and see how long it would last. The system cooled for him for the remainder of the season with no problem. I feel his request is unfair as I cannot possibly warrant a fifteen year old system against leaks. Sincerely, Derek Brandt Jim Russell PHAC"

Our sump pump was not sounding good this morning and I called Jim Russell. He was here within 2 hours to replace it. We have used Jim for the last 6 years for all of our heating/cooling and plumbing needs. He is a very honest and personable man to do business with. He is very thorough in his work. I never worry about being sold something I don't need or being overcharged for something. I would highly recommend Jim Russell for anyone looking for a good heating/cooling/plumbing guy.

"[member name removed] I am not sure who you are as no one in my company has ever spoken to you, I am going to assume that you are Ed’s wife. I am not sure where the break down happened regarding the plumbing work that we did for [member name removed]. [member name removed] called into the office (after 3 months of repeated calls by us to collect payment) he said he wanted an explanation of the job. At that time Dan explained the changes to him and [member name removed] said that was all he needed, he appreciated Dan’s time and he would get a check in the mail. Three weeks later we received a check and the account was paid in full. Then, Friday I received a letter from the better business bureau and then a phone call from Angie’s List telling me I had a very poor response on their website. I had no idea there was any kind of a problem and all of a sudden you are smearing my companies good name on the internet. I don’t know if you realize it or not but on the day of the work [member name removed]changed the scope of work when he told my plumber that he didn’t want to do the washer and dryer portion of the contract. They discussed some other things he wanted done which we were going to do on a time and material basis. My plumber went ahead and took care of the finish, he tried to install the faucet that you provided but it wouldn’t work due to the thickness of the top. They also installed a new di-electric union on the water heater that was compromised. Removed a faulty saddle valve and repaired the line. They drilled and installed the cabinet and helped your contractor set the top, none of which was in the contract. The proposal states rough-in only which means pipes sticking out of the floor with caps on them. He did it that way because at the time of the proposal you didn’t have a cabinet. Since the cabinet was there on the day of work he went ahead and took care of the “finish”, this means valves on the water lines, drains hooked up, a new basket strainer, etc. The proposal also states drywall repairs by others, you quoted his proposal verbatim on Angie’s List but forgot to mention that part when you made it sound like we left holes in your ceiling that you were not aware were going to be there. When the work was complete my plumber figured up the changes and they actually came out to about $150.00 more than the original contract but out of the goodness of his heart he kept the contract price the same. We have tried very hard to communicate with [member name removed]and have had a very difficult time getting in touch with him. I also tried to contact you directly via the phone number you left on the BBB paperwork. I would like for you to retract the very hateful comments that you put on the internet as I have worked very hard to keep a good reputation. We only did what [member name removed] asked us to do on the project and if there was a problem it should have been communicated to my office. I have built a successful business by solving people’s problems, but I can’t solve them if I don’t know they exist. Regards, Derek Brandt Jim Russell PHAC [email protected] 317-989-5773 317-873-5773"

We found them to be very responsive. They had corrected some issues for us, and they are just great to work with. They are very thorough and professional. If there appears to be a problem, they keep working on it until they identify the source or they have ruled out that there is a major problem. We have been just very pleased with them.

They had done work in my basement bathroom before, so I called them for this too.  They came out the day after I called.

I was worried my whole unit would have to get replaced; however it didn't.  They ran a few tests on the flow a d temperature of what I was getting when my A/C was on, and based on that they could tell there was a problem with the compressor.  They took a look at the compressor and immediately found the problem: over time the vibration of the unit had rubbed wires to where they got split.

They replaced the wires, added some padding around them so the same problem wouldn't happen again, and were done within a half an hour.  They were even nice enough to stick around for an extra 10 minutes or so to answer a couple of questions we had about hot water heaters (we're predicting we are near the end of the life of it).
