"Thank you for taking your time to review our services. We enjoyed having your pup stay!"
"Thank-you [Member Name Removed] for taking time to review our business. We take great pride in developing relationships with our clients so they can trust us and know their pet is in good hands. It is nice to receive positive feedback every once in awhile. Thanks again. Mel"
About 3 hours later, the owner of the Animal Den called me to inform me that our dog was ready to go, but that the groomer had accidentally sliced our dog's tongue while trimming the hair around her face. He said the groomer felt terrible but that our dog seemed fine and he didn't think there was anything that needed to be done with it. Based on the conversation, I was nervous but hopeful that it wouldn't be a very bad or long slice. He said he would be there to talk with us when we came to pick her up, which we did about 5 minutes later.
When we arrived, the person at the front desk said we could go ahead and pay the $93 while they went to bring our dog out, and it was later clear that she was aware of the incident so it made no sense to me why they would ask us to pay before we even saw her. I asked to see our dog first, and when she was brought out by the groomer, the groomer seemed very nonchalant about the whole thing, saying that our dog didn't seem bothered, there was no need for a vet to look at it, and that she would just have a "scar" for the rest of her life. Even if she felt awful about what happened, it really did not come across that way. When we finally got a good look at her tongue, it was actually worse than I thought it would be based on everyone's demeanor at the facility. It was about a 1/4 inch split on the tip of her tongue that will never grow back together. When the owner finally appeared, he did not even come directly over to us to face us and instead stood in the background watching as we were concernedly checking her over. I questioned him as to whether they have a vet on site because I am not informed enough to know if this could cause an infection, and he reiterated that he thought it would be fine and did not require a vet visit. To me, the professional thing to do would have been to come up to us and apologize profusely to our faces and tell us that we should take her to our vet just to be sure, and that they would pay for any vet charges incurred. We told them that we would take her to our vet despite their advice, which we did, and luckily we did not incur any charges. After all of that, I went up to the counter and they still expected that I would pay the full $93. I shockingly had to ask for a discount, to which the owner offered 50% off, and I accepted. Looking back on the whole situation and the way it was handled, I don't think I should have paid a dime.
Even though dogs are resilient and the permanent split in her tongue may not affect her on a daily basis, she is our family and I did not want to be responsible for bringing her pain and possibly causing her fear in getting groomed in the future. It has left an impression on us and it will be very difficult to trust other people to care for her, as if it wasn't already. I am also extremely disappointed and angry at the way this was handled in person by the Animal Den and will not be returning. I hope they show a lot more empathy for owners and their pets if this happens to anyone else, no matter how serious the incident is.
"We appreciate your insight. It is a shame you did not call and talk with us in person since the care of our beloved pets is something we take very seriously and always encourage open and honest dialogue. Trust is something we earn and work very hard to maintain. Your comments will be shared as a learning experience in regards to customer care and perceptions."
I did my homework here on Angie's List and found Animal Den. I went out to visit one day, and was so impressed. I was greeted warmly at the front desk and although I was there unannounced, the receptionist was happy to call someone to give me a tour right away. She showed me the whole place, including the laundry and kitchen areas. Everything was clean yet warm and inviting (one place I visited seemed overly bright and sterile! This place seemed just right.) I arranged for Chico to stay in a deluxe suite (small, quiet room with only 4 cages, and Kuranda beds) because the dogs seemed so calm in there.
Anyway, the day I brought him, I left Chico in the car to run in to see if the coast was clear (i.e., no dogs around). The staff kindly put us into a private reception room, which is such a great way to ease a dog into a new place. It was clean and cozy with soft music and a bed, and Chico was obviously enjoying himself. He did his tricks and took treats and played with his ball (these are things he loves but won't do when he's stressed). Someone came in and greeted us and went over all the necessary info, and took inventory of all the stuff I brought. I like that I can bring a blanket with the family's smell on it, and whatever toys he wants. I asked for the staff to give him treats whenever they interacted with him (because he sometimes growls at people, and we want to get him to start associating people with good things to change that reaction!), and they were happy to do that. I also paid for 2 playtimes per day and brought his favorite flying toy, and the staff person said yes, they would throw that for him during the play time (I know there's no way of knowing if they actually do this, but Chico seemed happy and tired when I picked him up, so I believe they did! I hope so!).
When I picked Chico up, again, they were understanding about his reactivity and made sure he was the only dog in the waiting room when they brought him out. They said he barked a LOT in that deluxe suite and thought he would be happier in the standard kennels--they considered him a sociable dog who seemed to want to be around the action. Maybe so--plus he could have access to the outdoors within his little run, which he would probably like. I loved the little card they gave me that said how he ate, how his elimination habits were, and his overall demeanor. I also appreciated the flyer with information about easing your dog back into the routine at home--it was really helpful.
All in all, I am so grateful to find Animal Den. I love their attitude--everyone seemed friendly and understanding of Chico's issues. It will be a comfort to me to leave him here for a visit next time we have to go away.
"Thank-you (member name removed) for sharing your experience with other pet owners. We are so glad Chico's experience was fantastic. We look forward to your next visit."
"Great feedback. Sorry you did not share these thoughts with us last year but better late than never. You will know when you have found the perfect place for Montana. Since last year we have installed an amazing puppy playground, puppy astro turf, and an outdoor grassy playground the size of a hockey rink! Best wishes to you and your lovely furry friend."
I definitely recommend the Animal Den!
