Issues with communication started right after our initial meeting, I was under the impression that we would be dealing with Doug throughout the process, because he was the one who 'sold' us on using his company to do the work. We set up a time to meet with the insurance adjuster so Doug could be there as well. I took a half a day off from work, so I could meet with the adjuster and talk to Doug about next steps. So, I was a bit surprised when Doug didn't show up. He had sent another person from his company to handle our job. It wasn't a big deal that someone else was helping us, but I was upset that I didn't get a call or anything from Doug telling me that he would be much less involved in our repairs than what he initially told us.
Two or three weeks passed before work began on our house (this was more a result of my wife and I picking colors for the siding and roofing than anything). Once we had decided what we were going to use, we contacted our new representative from Sego, LLC to start work. We requested that we be notified when the roofers and siding would go on. Our request fell on deaf ears. Nobody told us anything. One day roofers were on my roof taking off the old and putting on the new. I was upset that nobody told us that the work was going to start, but to this point the work was being done well and timely. So, I let it pass.
The siding was next on the list, and it took much longer to get started. The storm hit in late May, the roof was on by mid june, but the siding did not get started until late July/early August. I asked again that we be contacted with the siding installers were going to start work. Again, this request fell on deaf ears. All of the sudden, our house was half way completed. I was upset that I wasn't told, but I was more upset that the installers were not putting the insulation between the house and the siding that my wife and I insisted be put up. We called and this was remedied. They took the siding down and put the insulation up correctly. Apparently, the insulation had never been put on the work order. Furthermore, boxes of leftover siding from our job and others were piled at the edge of our driveway for weeks and ended up killing some of the grass in our yard.
This was when I started to feel a bit more uneasy about the company we were working with. The communication issues were getting worse...calls were not returned and if they were they were returned much too late, and had the installers not left half a side of our home undone over night, we would have never known that we did not get the insulation and I am sure we would have paid for it nonetheless.
A couple of days after the siding was taken down and reinstalled, everything seemed complete. The only thing left was window screens. Those were repaired rather quickly and put back on the house. After they were put back on the house, my wife looked at them and the support bar for one of the screens was obviously crooked. It looked ridiculous. I'm guessing nobody used a level while fixing it. I called our contact, and he told me that he had noticed the screen was bad when he put it up. I asked the obvious question of why he put it up and why he had not told me about it. After our conversation, the screen was fixed....again.
The entire house was done probably by mid August, but then I noticed that the siding on the back side of our house was loose. I looked at it closer, and the siding had not been attached at the top. It was only supported by the bottom nails and nothing else. I called right away (mid-august). It was literally just fixed a week or so ago (end of October).
In general, the delays in fixing their mistakes later in the process and the lack of communication throughout the process made me have a very bad opinion of this company. We were given an estimated completion date of 6/14/11. There were a couple of weeks of delay on our part picking colors, but that is no excuse for the work not being completed until late October. When I think back to Doug Sego sitting in my kitchen telling me he was going to treat this house like it was his own, I get upset. The work got done, and I have checked over it a lot to get comfortable that it was done correctly. But I shouldn't have had to make myself feel comfortable....that was their job.
Our issues have all been resolved, but as first time home-owners who had never needed a contractor before, we wanted to share our story so anyone considering them will know that they "don't treat every home like it is their own".
