About us

80 +/- employees. Cost is determined by the job. Sub-contractors used on select projects. Earl and Dorothy Knapp started Sundown Gardens in 1949 by specializing in growing peonies and perennials for retail sales. They grew and cultivated plant material as cut flowers for purchase. In 1966, Stevan Knapp, Earl and Dorothy’s only child, started the landscape division. To complete the full-service lawn and garden package, Sundown Gardens offered a landscape maintenance service in 1993. The service provides landscaping, hardscape and lawn services. To this day, the service customizes groundskeeping plans for client properties primarily throughout Indianapolis and surrounding areas, including but not limited to: Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers and Geist. In 1995, Dorothy and Stevan retired and a few long-standing employees took leadership of the company. The current owners, along with a dedicated team of knowledgeable and skilled experts, continue the Sundown Gardens tradition of expert knowledge coupled with quality installation and top-tier customer service. In January 2016 Sundown Gardens moved to its new location at: 505 West 186th Street, Westfield, IN 46074, at the corner of Springmill Road and 186th Street. Nate and Phil were knowledgeable and helpful in helping us select Norway Spruce and Red Pointe Maples for our landscaping. Clayton and Tomas were excellent on the installation, ensuring everything met our expectation and satisfaction. They took care not to damage anything, and explained what they were doing and why. We will not hesitate to use them again.

Not well. They forgot to put me on their spring schedule for three applications of fungicide to prevent Leaf Spot . They were also taking care of our euonymus plant. As a result of them not doing their job I have lost half of our euonymus plant and our Crab apple tree suffered premature defoliation which weakens the tree. I left a voicemail on Sept. 29th. and another one Tues. the 13th. this week and have not heard back from anyone. I left another message today and told them not to provide anymore services on my property . We have used this company for the last few years and they always did a great job and were great to work with. Don't know what is going on with them but they don't seem to care about their residential customers. I will never recommend them again nor will I ever use them again . Sad to see this happen to a once good company. They did offer to fertilize our tree this fall but since they won't return my calls I told them not to bother.. This offer was made last April and I have not heard from them since.

Great job plowing our snow this winter. Easy to contact, very dependable and always keeps you informed. Excellent job of cleaning snow and very careful not to damage the surrounding landscape. Great to know Sundown will always be there when you need them.

Excellent. Scott Levy is a great designer, and we love the results, including backyard patio/kitchen and all trees/shrubs/flowers and sidewalk/patio stone designs. We also appreciate a multi-year relationship of their quarterly maintenance of our landscaping so that it stays in top condition. A good, honest company that is responsive and always helpful. Our neighbors have hired them too based on our recommendation (or good looking landscaping) and they are happy as well.

Highly recommend Sundown Gardens for any landscaping needs. My husband and I were shopping around for a spruce tree this summer, and Sundown Gardens had absolutely the best selection. Lots of trees to choose from and all looked very healthy and nice. We ended up buying a decent-sized spruce and two other maple trees. The prices were very reasonable, with the price of the spruce tree being less than other places we shopped around for the size of the tree. Installation prices went down if you installed more trees. They called the utility companies to mark with flags before they came to plant. On install day, we were both at work and when I got home, I wished they had planted the spruce tree facing a different way (as all trees have a better side). After some thinking, I decided to call them back to ask about it, and they sent a crew out to turn the tree the way I wanted. Very happy with their service, and it seems like they are willing to make the customer happy. Give their nursery a look if you are looking for plants or trees!

Had a designer come out and look at the property. Never heard back from them even after leaving repeated voicemails. Called and spoke to customer service and was told i will hear back but again never heard back. Probably too busy to take new work or just dont want my business. Thought it was a bit unprofessional of them.

Their pricing is very competitive. Their attention to detail is excellent, especially when seeding the lawn - they're very careful to not get it into the landscape. If I have an issue, if there's something going on with the grass that I'm not familiar with, they always get back to me and will come look at the property.

Been a long-time customer of Sundown Gardens. Quality of service seems to have decreased. Plant spacing was off and had to be replanted. New mulch is full of weeds after 3 weeks of placement. Referred a friend to Sundown for new landscaping and they never received a return call after multiple calls to their office which is disappointing. Not sure I will use next spring/summer.

Very prompt service. I just left a message and they came 3 days later to perform the service. They treated 2 very very large ash trees with PentraBark and Safari. I have used them for the last three years. The gigantic trees are alive and heathly and free from ash borer damage so far. Neighbors untreated trees are dying.

I was extremely happy with their service. I had used a different service for many years then switched to Sundown. Sundown provided many additional services for about the same cost. They did hand edging versus mechanical edging, weeded, trimmed, and cleaned out the flower beds. I would recommend Sundown Gardens and will continue to use them.
