Darrell Bowden was very prompt, professional and reasonably priced.  He knew it was a small job, but that didn't stop him.  Some handymen want a minimum 3 hour billing or else they consider the job a waste of their time.  Darrell purchased all the supplies and even provided a receipt for the purchases.  We will definitely use Bowden Home Service again.

Had leaky window and couldn't pin down the cause.  Mr. Bowden came promptly after getting my message, and pointed out what he believed the problem was (weird drainage from a section of the roof).  He came back two days later with an improvised solution, and did a good job doing the repairs as agreed.  He could not (and should not) guarantee that his improvisation would permanently cure the problem, but I believe that it has.  In any event, he promised to come back if the leak still existed, and take further steps to fix it.  Also, he is a near-lifetime Westfield resident, which means he is sensitive about keeping a good reputation, because people know where he lives....

I think they are very good, they were efficient, and they were here on time. We were satisfied with what they did. We thought the price was reasonable. They were very good, and personable. They talked, and were open to communication. They called back right away, and they came out when they needed to be. We are very happy with them. I have recommended them to other people that I know.

Mr. Bowden was timely showing up to our house and explained that he was a little more expensive per hour then the previous quote we received but his work was excellent. During the next few days I asked several times to tell me how long he thought it would take to finish the agreed upon work, but he would never give me even an estimate. He told me it takes what it takes.
Mr. Bowden took 37 hours to perform a very small job. When he found wood rot in several 2 x 4 boards, I did ask him to replace those in additions to the other work being performed.
After the second day he handed me a contract to sign that stated I would be charged time and mileage to/from the hardware store, but I never thought he would drive back and forth to Westfield, which is where he lives, instead of going to the same box store 5 miles from my house. That same contract stated that he would charge an excess of 15% on top of all parts purchased. I signed the contract because we had to have the work finished for a party we were having at our house and my entire porch was torn apart.
Mr. Bowden installed one of the two glass/screen doors but didn't know until I showed him that he installed it upside down. He then told me that I would have to get another handyman to install the doors.
When Mr. Bowden came to me with the bill, I told him I was very upset with his charges and felt I was being taken advantage of.
He 'reworked' the bill and we agreed on a discounted amount.

Response from Bowden Home Service
"[member name removed]'s porch was much worst than originally thought with extensive rot. The more we took it apart the more problems occurred. I agree it did take longer than we originally thought as It was like exploratory surgery. I did amend the bill much to my own loss but it was not because[member name removed] asked me to as suggested by her. I have a policy of doing almost anything I must to make the customer happy which I did in this situation.I'm sincerely sorry she was unhappy and I bent over backwards to rectify the problem."

I was very pleased....Mr. Bowden knew exactly how to hang the drapery rod that we wanted installed. The draperies were very heavy and he knew exactly how to install them so we would not have problems later.

Darrell is a careful, dedicated craftsman. He removed and replaced several feet of soffit and detail molding on our house. He had to fabricate the detail as none was available. The job was done on time and under estimate too!

Mr. Bowden completed quality work. He measured and ordered the window and while he was waiting for the window to come in he installed the access door and trim. He returned when the window was in and installed it. Both times the work was completed in a less than a day and the area was clean after Mr. Bowden finished.

Darrell Bowden did an excellent job! He was very accurate in all his work. All his review of work needed to be done was very honest and fair. He always kept us informed of his progress and if he found anything unforseen as he progressed. Always showed us what he found, gave estimate of the additional work, and cleared with us before proceeding. I appreciated his honesty in doing this.

We have a fairly large home nearly 6000 Sq. feet that had some high levels to work. He followed very safe practice in how he preformed his work.

I highly recommend Darrell and we will certainly use him again when we need outside work done on our home.

Mr. Bowden was polite enough, but very irresponsible. He was not punctual; he showed up an hour late twice, and four or five hours late once. He seemed confused about confirmed appointments, and was very slow to respond to my contacting him. He called me at 10:30 at night to confirm an appointment that we already confirmed for the next morning. He forgot to caulk certain areas before painting, then brought the wrong caulk, so the job was delayed even more. He promised to fill certain small drywall holes (from pictures hanging), and he did not fill all of them. He took six days to complete a job that could have been done in 2-3 (house is only approx. 1800sq. ft.), because of his unpreparedness. He worked late into the evening (7:30 or so), which was an imposition on my family. I later told him to do so because I just wanted him to hurry up and finish the job. He left for long periods of time during the day, which caused him to return and work late into the evening. He painted a portion of my stairwell and loft that he was not supposed to paint. He also came up with unexpected charges for additional labor ($45/hr), for things that I thought were included in the original estimate, such as touch ups for his inaccuracies on the first or second coat of paint.

He did fine, and I was happy enough with him. However, there was a four hour minimum that he charged me, and he was done in two and a half hours.

Mr. Bowden charges $45 per hour. He told me originally that the work could be completed in 20 hours. He worked 20 hours and then told me that he had worked another 17 hours in 2 days to hang three closet doors. He was continually going to other jobs while working at my house. He drilled holes in doors in my kitchen leaving sawdust all over the floor. It was one of the worst experiences I've had with an independent contractor. I am awaiting a bill.
Response from Bowden Home Service
"1. Member was the sweetest person to work for until the last hour. I am flabbergasted at her attitude change and this report. If you read the last sentence of her report, in her own words she says, “I am awaiting a bill”. She complains at some length about the time spent and the amount of the charge, however she has not received a bill. How can one be “overcharged” until you receive a bill for the work? 2. My ad in Angie’s List says I do not do plumbing. However the faucets I explained to her, that even though plumbing is not my expertise, I would consider doing this for her. I put this off till last, however, I was “sent packing” by Member before I could do it. 3. The closet doors were 4 bi-fold doors per closet opening and there were 4 closets or a total of 16 doors. They were not hung backwards. They were paired different in each closet due to the fact that the doors were original doors and the guides in the tops and bottom had with much use become loose and the 3/8” holes were to large to properly accommodate the guides. By pairing the doors in different positions, new holes could be drilled where there were none already. Since the doors were now in different positions two of the four required a new hole drilled for the knob, and left two holes, though quite small, present from the original position. These I would have filled had I not been fired, by this dear lady, before I could do so. 4. Since the floors were carpeted and the new hardware was different from the original, some doors had to be cut off to fit. Even though the new hardware directions called for certain clearances I attempted to install them without cutting first. When it was evident they would not fit I had no choice to do otherwise. She was not home and could not be reached, and gave no hint she did not want them cut if necessary. 5. It is true that the doors were drilled in her kitchen with a low speed drill, however I swept up the loose sawdust from the floor with a dust broom and then brought in a shop vac to finish, at which point she told me she would rather I didn’t do so. 6.The following note was attached to the original estimate: *Estimated Time 20hr @ $45 = $900. This is only an estimate, I do not know the actual time. Most should be about right or less. #3 (this was for the hanging of the doors) is the most likely to be estimated wrong as there are so many unseen factors and it is something I don’t do often. The bill for the 16 doors was 14.5 hrsX$45.=652.50 less 6 hrs X$45 (-$270.)=Total Cost $382.50. (6.5 hours) You would think a customer would wait for a bill before complaining. This was for ½ hour more than the estimate that I said up front was probably an imperfect estimate. I think she got a pretty good deal. I hope she pays me ! The one good thing from this job, I didn’t have to crawl under her house and change those faucets. I wonder what a plumber will charge for that? Good luck!"

Mr. Bowden came and did the repairs the day after I called. He was kind, professional, courteous and extremely responsive. A real pleasure to work with. If we weren't moving out of state I would hire him again without any hesitation.
