A Fence Guy

We worked with almost 2 dozen different vendors on our extensive home remodel (essentially a gut) and have to say that James' company was simply a pleasure to work with. His company, along with our tile guy and our lead plumber were our top three vendors. They did everything that they said they would do, were respectful of the property, cleaned up well and...most important, did extremely high-quality work. We worked with several vendors from Angie's list, ranging from mediocre to outright horrible. James' company was a refreshing change.

Jim and his accompaniment did a fantastic job installing our fencing! It turned out better than we imagined! High quality work and the price was just right. Highly recommended!!

They did a great job. They were easy to work with, communicated often and were excellent in their quality and craftsmanship. We're working on approximately a dozen different home improvement projects throughout the home and Jim has been the most enjoyable to work with. Thank you!

He did a fabulous job, convincing us to use cedar instead of vinyl (existing fence was vinyl) saving us almost $2K. We wanted the new fence to match the existing fence, and he suggested staining the new fence to match the old fence, and told us to go to Home Depot and use their Behr stain, which can be color matched.

Great would like to buy from again

He did a great job, although it took a little longer than initially estimated, because his bond expired the day after he applied for the permit. He had the receipt to show he paid his bond renewal, but the government needed the original bond before he could get the permit and start on the new fence. Since he didn't need the permit to repair the existing fence, he did that while waiting for the bond to arrive. I couldn't be happier with the results. I have never seen a straighter fence. He actually convinced us to build a cheaper fence (cedar instead of vinyl) and stain the fence to match the existing fence. Very personable, beautiful workmanship.

Never contacted me to schedule / execute the work. Initially responded and came out to the house and looked but then no reply after I said yes, let's proceed.

Jim and Son did a great job on our fence and we couldn't be happier with the finished product.?They took (3) days to finish since our lot is so wide, they took their time and did the job the right way and it looks fantastic. The materials were first class and the posts all lined-up in a perfect line?across the?entire width of the 100ft wide yard. They did such a good job that my neighbor asked for a few of?their business cards to recommend them to his landscaping customers looking for a fence.?They were also the best quote that we received for the same?materials and labor?and the other company only?used sub-contractors to do the work which, to us, was suspect since we didn't know who was eventually going to show up and?be on our property. I would recommend them to anyone. Great price, Great workmanship and Great responsiveness. So glad we found them on Angie's list and had them build our fence to keep the neighbor dogs from barking at us, non-stop, every time we're?trying to relax and enjoy?our yard.

Really good. He got to our project quicker than I thought he would and did a great job on the repairs.

He installed a chain link fence, 1 gate and 1 double gate.  He does very good work, the materials were very good and we are very pleased with the work. We would have him do work again.

It didn't . He never returned my call or left me a message.

The service I was provided was great.  Jim walked me through all of his repair plans.  He's very knowledgeable about his trade and it shows.  I would recommend A Fence Guy to anyone.
I received quotes from other fence companies and I felt he was the best match for our job given his background and pricing.  Very competitive.

I don't think Jim does this full-time, so there may be a little bit of a delay getting in touch with him.  With that said, we were completely happy with his work.  We can't even tell that there was ever anything wrong with the fence.  He came out, did his job, cleaned up, and even hauled away materials unrelated to the job.  The price was extremely fair and the quality of the work is great.  We'd hire him again any time.

I called and left Jim a message.  (I don't think he does this full time.)  He called back within a week.  I told him the scope of the job and that I wasn't in a rush.  Within a week or ten days he came by.  He was to get me an agreement by the weekend.  I never saw it until the day before he started.  He did call with a price and I agreed.  It was another two weeks before he called again to set a tentative day.  It was then that he came by with the agreement and picked up a check for 1/3.  He got another 1/3 when he showed up later that week and the balance when he finished the following day.
Like I said, punctuality (promptness) was not his strong suit but don't go by my experience because I made the mistake of saying I was in no rush.  I assumed he would fit me in around other jobs but now I believe he only does this part time (nights and weekends).
I would definitely use him again if I needed fence work.

After Jim Tague came to my home on Wednesday, 8/24/11 and took measurements of the property, he gave me an estimate and I agreed (with a handshake), to contract with him to do the work, which was scheduled to start on Friday, 9/2/11 and finish Monday, 9/5/11. On 8/26/11 Jim informed me that he would not be able to perform the work himself, as he would be going back to his regular job as an iron worker @ B/P, but said his buddy, (which was an experienced fence installer) could do the job, and Jim would stop by to oversee the job as it was progressing. which I agreed to.   On 8/28/11, I signed a proposal and also met the substitute installer.  Prior to the signing of the contract, Jim said since they were digging on the property, they would have to have my lot checked for gas lines, water lines, cable lines, etc. I waited for this to be done and after a few days I let Jim know that no one had come out to do this work and he told me, "I thought you would be making those arrangements", which seemed a little out of line to me as I had no information that was needed to make those arrangements, but I agreed to get the ball rolling, made the call and the people came out the next day and flags were laid. After I signed the contract, it was determined that the dimensions were wrong and overlapped the easement.  Changes were made which lessened the amount of supplies that were needed  i.e. concrete, wood posts and pickets. No mention was made as to what happened to the extra unused supplies, if they would be given to me or if I would be credited for them. I asked the substitute installer about the extra unused supplies and he said that he was lucky he had enough cedar pickets, as there were some that were damaged and couldn't be used, after Jim assured me prior to signing the contract that he handpicked all the pickets before buying them. So obviously someone was handing me a line!  I felt that after my signature was on the contract, there wasn't a lot of concern as to how the job progressed or the returning my phone calls, etc. The fence looks good as far as my knowledge of fences go.  All in all I feel that they thought they were dealing with a not so intelligent single woman, which I took exception to. If you are not familiar with the fence installation process, I would not recommend contracting with Mr. Tague and if I could have given a C- rating I would have but gave him the benefit of a C instead of a D rating.  And I would also advise Mr. Tague that adjustments need to be made to his ethical compass.

Jim was very responsive. He was the last company we called for an estimate, but was the only fence company (from a total of 5 estimates completed) that even called us back as a follow-up on doing the job. And the job is now complete!

Jim replaced 232' of fence from the storm damage. Once he was 1/2 done with that project, we were both so happy with the finished fencing we asked him do another 71' in another area. That has been also been completed and its great.
We have scheduled him to do another 32' area in August.
We highly recommend Jim.

We are also greatful we found him on Angies List because he in not in our Schererville local area and would not have found him with it.
And do not distance hold you back. He traveled from Valpo to Schererville to complete the job.

We had called before the weekend and the gentleman said he would call back on Monday and set up a time to come out that day. I took the day off of work to be available at any time, but he never called back that day or any other. I waited for hours. I think that is very inconsiderate and unprofessional.

We got our estimate and it was the cheapest one around.  He got our fence up by the time he promised even though there was a lot of rain that helped cause some delays.  He understood how I wanted my fencing done as I wanted it to keep in even the tiniest dogs.  It goes all the way to the ground without a gap, right up to the buildings and put in the double entry gateway.  He was very patient with me being a fidgety worry wort about the fencing and how I wanted it done.  

Jim did a fantastic job. He came out for an estimate within 24 hours of our first telephone call. He listened to my wife to make sure he understood exactly was she had invisioned and then drew a sketch of what he was going to do to make sure it met her approval. We quoted 2 other companies and Jim's price was the lowest by 40%. He was the most knowledgable and genuine of the contractor's we interviewed. He wasn't just looking to be awarded the job. The entire time he made sure we were happy with the work. His payment schedule was reasonable and he wouldn't take final payment until we walked the fence and made sure everything looked great. We will definately use Jim again when we expand and we will continue to refer him to friends and family. You cannot go wrong with Jim.
