Hoosier Lawn Pro took over our lawn care during the summer of 09, on recommendation from our previous long term, lawn care specialist, who moved out of state at that time. During that first summer, Tom Padgett, the owner, was on site to do our lawn mowing and care each week. During that time the work was satisfactory and we had no major complaints. During the summer of 2010, however, a different crew did our lawn care, and Tom was not on site, unless we called and asked him to specifically come to look at a problem. The work done by this crew was generally okay, though one new person did a horrible job of edging the grassy areas, leaving us with uneven bare spots that were approx. 8-10" wide in places. It took several weeks to recover. When I called the office to explain what had happened, I heard a list of defensive excuses as to what might have gone wrong, several suggesting that we were doing something wrong ourselves. I tried to explain nicely, but kept getting other excuses as to what might have happened. I was told they just do that trimming as a courtesy to us. Courtesy or not, we didn't want a horrible job done. A few weeks later, when Tom was called on site for other reasons, he could still see the left over uneven areas from the edging/trimming. There were other times when we needed to communicate with someone in the office, and found our calls to meet with a defensive attitude, no matter how polite we tried to be. We were, however, able to reach Tom on his cell phone, and he always was polite and came to check out the problem. No one on our specific lawn crew was licensed to treat the lawn with chemicals. Our lawn had suffered from summer patch disease for a number of years, depending on the weather. Last summer, the weather was extremely tough on the yard, and we lost much of the susceptible grass due to fungus, and the fact that with no one on site who could do the fungicide treatments, it wasn't started quickly enough. Tom did come out to treat the lawn at least a couple of times, but other times, sent out someone else who works with him. We understood that the fungus was not the fault of Hoosier Lawn Pro, but we needed new seed for those dead areas. That was done late in the summer, but straw was used to cover the seed. I would never allow that again, as the straw was never picked up as I was told it would be, and this spring, there was still straw on, and ground into, much of those areas. While the seed was germinating, I was given conflicting information from Tom, about watering the lawn, which we had always done according to proper watering procedures our previous lawn specialist had given us. After the seeding was done, more grass died, some in a very unusual curved line pattern. The crew denied doing anything that could cause that. While no one else had been on the lawn to do anything, we did not blame them, but needed further seed put down. It was, unfortunately, late in the season, and we basically, have almost no grass growing this spring, from either of those two seedings. What we have is a lot of bare ground in those areas. Early this year, we received the schedule and cost of proposed work for the 2011 season. We wanted to discuss the specific plan for reseeding and treatment, to get our lawn back to a healthy situation, so I called Tom to talk with him about this. I was told that we couldn't tell yet what grass would come up, despite the fact that we see areas of nothing but dirt. I was told that 'he didn't earn a dime from doing our lawn last year'. I was told 'he could not be here every week to watch over our lawn'. I was told he would come out, and reseed our lawn, at no cost, to keep his name ''clean", and that we should 'find a little guy who could be here every week to mow and take care of our lawn'. I had to ask 3 times, why he had sent us the cost and schedule, for us to have the option of prepaying for the summer, before he finally started to answer, that 'he shouldn't have done that'. At this point, I told him this was not 'very good business' and hung up. I was upset that he would act in this manner, which we considered to be very unprofessional. We had not blamed him for much of what had happened, and I told him so. We could only wonder how long it would have been before he told us that he was not interested in doing our lawn care this year, leaving us with little time to find a replacement. I have written Tom and apologized for hanging up, but we are totally dissatisfied with our experience with Hoosier Lawn Pro. If we had a lawn that had no problems of any sort, if we were interested in having a crew come in and do a quick job of mowing, and if we did not care about being able to communicate with the owner of the business, we likely would have had a much happier experience. Perhaps, Hoosier Lawn Pro took on too many new jobs when our previous guy moved away, but that doesn't excuse the lack of professionalism. We also did get an estimate for leaf blowing from Hoosier Lawn Pro, for the fall of 09, however chose to go with the company we had used in the past. Communications given to his office, apparently did not reach Tom, as while we were gone on vacation, his crew blew all of our leaves. It was not done as we would have instructed, if we had chosen them to do the work, and it was done too early, necessitating further work later by our chosen company. We ended up paying more than we normally would have had to pay for the leaf work.
