Throughout the job there were signs of bad things to come, i.e, they had to borrow a bucket for their (minwax) stain, they had no tarps laid down to protect our hallways from their equipment, they forgot to bring the samples of the finish and the colors of stain we asked to see, etc...but the worst part came when they applied the stain on the second day. In both bedrooms the irregularites in the stain were staggering, including pools of stain all around the perimeter of the rooms, and a "windsheild wiper effect" from applying the stain perpendicular to the grain of the wood. On the morning of day three, we thoroughly explained our concerns and pointed out the flaws throughout the rooms. Justin admitted that the stain had been wrongly applied against the grain, and assured us that he would address all of our concerns. At the end of the day, he did nothing at all to fix the stain problem except to seal it in with a sloppy coat of bubbled poly.
On the fourth day, when we presented him with the same exact concerns of the day before, he insisted that he had resanded the floors and reapplied the stain the day before. Yet, he admitted that all the same irregularities remained. When we asked him what he could do to make it right, he suggested that he should sand the floors and start over again. Unthinkable! We might have been naive at first, but there is no way we would let these guys near our floors with a sander again! All evidence suggested that there was no time or tools or intentions or anything else that a second chance could fix--these guys simply don't know how to do the job right!
So, to make a long story short, we did not pay him the second half of the deposit. Perhaps we should have demanded a full refund, because now we will have to buy a giant rug to cover the floors until we can afford to pay someone else to do it over. Furthermore, we have a whole new series of necessary repairs to attend to in the hallways, which IHF tore up with their equipment.
