Tom Shank was responsive with phone calls, kept me updated of progress. He is very willing to work within your budget and has really great ideas. Tom also worked with me on using the stones I already had to help in keeping costs down. My goal was to keep things as "natural-looking" as possible and this was done. The overall outcome is a beautifully landscaped yard and I would definitely use this company for future projects and have already recommended this company to several people.

In Summer of 2011, we were shopping bids and ideas for fixing up the landscape behind our existing paver patio in the back yard.  Our back yard is slanted so we were having difficult fixing up something that looked good ourselves.  Through the course of looking over several designs and estimates, we finalized our plan to build a retaining wall around the patio and fill it in with mulch and assorted plants.  In addition to that, we would be having 2 stone pillars built to highlight a couple new steps that would be installed to step down from our patio into the yard.

We found a guy who had the great idea of doing all of this, but his price was unreasonably expensive.  Then we called Thomas Shank, and presented him with our design and asked him if he could do it much cheaper.  He said yes, and so we contracted him.

The crew is composed of 2 guys who really know their stuff.  I brainstormed ideas with them on several occasions and we were almost always on the same page - even when the original design needed changed (and it did on several occasions).  They presented us with a few additional ideas that were not on the original design such as lighting that turned out great in the end.

We liked the work so much that we contracted Thomas Shank Landscaping again very shortly after to re-do our front landscpe.  We had them remove a do-it-yourself flower bed w/ retaining wall and replace it with a new lush mulch bed with assorted trees and plants.  They also over-seeded, installed several other beds with plants, boulders, etc. and really helped us meet our goal of upping the re-sale value of our home.  We are having this company also aerate our lawn in the upcoming Spring and finish sealing our patio.  We get complimented on our new landscape quite a bit, and we would highly recommend them to anybody who asks.

In reference to the 2 "B" ratings above... Only maybe 2 things negative I could say at all about this company.... the time it takes to get the job done. And it's not because they don't work hard, it's because they work short days. Their 2 man crew (1 foreman and 1 other guy) typically showed up between 9 and 10 and left between 1 or 2, with an hour lunch and a few breaks. I can sympathize because many of the days were extremely hot, but I don't want to leave anything out of my review. There were a few days where they didn't show up at all and I never received a phone call, but we assumed it was because they had other work that took precedence that day. Some days they were there for such a short period of time, we wouldn't have even known they visited if it weren't for the oil stains their truck left on the street each day. Tom really needs to get those guys a new truck! I think they missed a couple days of work from that thing breakin down.  The other thing is that occasionally we have difficulty getting a timely response to questions/inquiries, but the job has been completed so we are sure the guys are busy with other work.

But again, all in all, a job very well done.  We are very happy with the work.

It looks very nice. The thickness of the limestone was not what they showed us when they sold us the product. It looks pretty, but the product is different. We have had a problem and contacted them. They have still yet to fix the problem. The limestone looks very nice it is just not anchored very well. They were very reasonably priced.

Tom and his crew were both professional and courteous. They worked hard to get the job done to our satisfaction. We did experience a few quality issues but Tom was very responsive to "make things right."
