About us
We have been in business since 1987. There are three employees. Most of our business is from word of mouth from satisfied customers. We also work out of Muskegon, Michigan. The (231) 740-2171 phone number is my Michigan number. We offer professional antique furniture refinishing and restoration, professional wood stripping, and cabinet refinishing and repair. We also provide caning and weaving services, which can save you a significant amount of money by repairing and refinishing what you already own versus buying brand new. We will also work with you and your insurance company if you experience furniture damage as a result of water or fire. We do custom furniture painting including outdoor patio furniture. We can also coordinate services with other trusted suppliers (such as upholsterers) if necessary.

John gave a very helpful and specific quote over the phone by looking at some emailed photos. We dropped off the chair, and the work was completed within days, well ahead of schedule. John came in right on budget, and ahead of time. The craftsmanship was excellent and the chair looks better than ever!

Our dates got bumped a few times due to other jobs running long or being put on the calendar so I would encourage people to get an estimate and get on their calendar. Once the work started John and John were very efficient. They did very nice work. We had a few touch up items that needed to be done but they took care of them with no problems. We added new floors as well and with their work it looks like a brand new kitchen. It was roughly a 2 week process. We would use them again.

I had tried to strip the paint off an antique wooden file cabinet, but ran into allergy problems with the stripper. The people at Second Time Around stripped the old paint off and filled some places where the wood had deteriorated. It's ready for me to put my finish on.
They loaded and unloaded my cabinet carefully and were always very professional.

Three of my kitchen chairs had come apart, the stretchers no longer connected to the legs with the remaining three likely to do the same. I tried to re-glue them myself with no success. At 2nd Chance they re-glued the whole set and put better protective pad on the feet. I was please not to have to buy new chairs.
They helped load and unload the chairs from my van even though I could have done it myself. Dog pats were free.

I dropped off the wood chair at the provider location on July 21, 2014. The provider quoted me a price to repair the chair between $50.00-$75.00. He said the chair would be done within a week and that he would call me when the chair was ready.
The next week, I hadn't heard from the provider, so I called him. He informed me it was taking a little longer to repair the chair and that it should be done within the next few days. I received a call from the provider on August 1st, saying the chair was finished.
I picked up the chair later that afternoon. I was very happy with the work done.
If you didn't know the chair was cracked, you wouldn't even notice where it had been repaired. I would definitely use them again!

I initially took 2 of my oak chairs (plus a sample chair) into the shop and asked for them to be ready in 5-6 weeks. I then returned the following week with two additional chairs. Chuck and owner, John, were very accommodating and assured me that the chairs would be ready by date promised. The final product was very well done and good match to my existing chairs. I am very happy with the result.

Dropped off 2/7/14 and picked up finished cabinet on 4/2/14. I was wanting this cabinet the same finish as current bathroom vanity drawers and they did a good job matching the finish. There was a little confusion on the original price quote but everything worked out.

Second Time Around repaired the arm on the settee so that, unless you knew it had been broken, you would never notice the repair. They repaired the chair seat and gave the chair an all over tightening up because it was near collapse. The repairs were completed before the promised date for a bit under the estimate. The gentleman I worked with was pleasant and explained the repairs to me when he gave me the estimate and showed me the repairs before I paid. They had some pieces in the shop awaiting pick up that they had refinished. The quality was beautiful and meticulous. I highly recommend Second Time Around.

He did a great job. It took a little longer than originally quoted, because recaining the seats were so difficult. They had to redo 3 times. But in no rush for the chairs. They are beautiful.

"Second" picked up the dresser from my house and took it back to their shop, where they did a nice job of stripping paint from the dresser as I requested. He did in one week what I hadn't been able to do in months. Sure made my life easier!

It was an old cigar humidor that my grandfather had. It had old water stains and the refinished furniture and it is a beautiful piece of furniture again. I would recommend them and say that they did a beautiful job for me. Their quality was excellent. They took the piece of furniture. They said they were busy and would get back to me in about six weeks; I did call in the fifth week, because I was going to give it to brother. They were almost done and told me to come over and get it. They were very punctual and professional. I would use them again.

They picked up the desk from my house and when the repairs were complete, I visited the workshop to look at stain choices. He painted a few on so I could actually see what it would look like which was nice. When the staining and drying was complete, he brought the piece back to my house for no extra charge.

He took all the doors back to the shop but sanded the boxes down to the bare wood and hand stained and applied a satin finish. Beautiful job. He restores antiques and furniture damaged in fires. Highly recommend him.

They do absolutely exceptionally fine work. He is a true crafstman and the men that works with him. He does wonderful work. He is not inexpensive, but he is a true tradesman and his shop does wonderful work. Even his prices, I think for what he does, is good.

John was easy to work with and reasonably priced for the amount of work that needed to be done to the cabinet. He told us at the beginning that it would be a long process due to the amount of repair that the cabinet needed. He kept us up to date on the progress and called when it was time to pick the color of the stain to be used. The cabinet is now home in a corner of my kitchen and is a work of beauty.
We were so pleased with the work done that we had him give us an estimate on repairing the door on a large chimney cabinet. He took it with him that day.
