I should just cut and paste the review from January 06, 2015 on this company because the same thing happened to me. I should have checked Angie's List first!
Technician from Elite Hating & A/C Refrigeration, Inc showed up on time. Very personable. He was to clean and inspect my ten year old Carrier furnace. It had been inspected and cleaned just one year ago. He claimed that the heat exchanger was bad and needed to be replaced because it was damaged (scorch marks on top and an expansion of a joint in the far back of the furnace was too wide) and not working properly (emitting high carbon monoxide count (20 ppm) and some yellow spots in the blue flames). He said he was going to cut me a break and not notify Louisville because they would cut the gas off to my house until the furnace was repaired or replaced. He warned me to not have someone else inspect my furnace before it was replaced. He then proceeded to call his office and have them check the warranty. Despite the owners manually saying the furnace had a 20 year warranty, he told me the system was out of warranty because it was not been properly registered with Carrier ten years ago when it was first installed .He then proceeded to tell us about a good deal from Carrier that was only available for a few more days for a new air conditioner for $6,850. Along with the new air conditioner I would get a new 96% efficient furnace, new 4" media filter system, new humidifier, new WIFI thermostat, and condensate pump system. He said we could trust him because he did not get a commission.
I told him my wife and I would think it over but it sounded very good.
After he left, I decided to so some research on line. I found some of his comments did not stand up. I finally contacted Carrier directly and was told that I had a full ten years left on my warranty with parts and labor for 100% on the secondary heat exchanger. They put me in contact with Middletown Air Conditioning & Heating which had only one (positive) review in Angie's List. The technician from Middletown A/C & Heating inspected the furnace the next day and found nothing wrong. Carbon Monoxide was less than 5 ppm. We talked about what the other technician had said and he informed me that scorch marks are normal. The location he tested CO was not the recommended location to test for CO. Gas to the furnace should be turned off if the furnace was venting well over 30 ppm not 20. The local gas company would only be notified if the furnace was an old fashion one with a pilot light. Once again he said my warranty was good for another 10 years. The furnace should work longer than that if cared for properly (he said mine looks well taken care of). The technician said he has been in this field for over 15 years and as far as he knew; his company was the only Carrier dealer in the area with technicians who did collect commissions. He recommended that I get an electric plug in CO detector for upstairs. Which I plan to get this weekend.
I have filed a complaint with the Kentucky Attorney General.
