It turns out I did not have a transmission problem. I took it back to the original mechanic. They were very friendly and helped figure out what the problem was.

The gentleman in charge examined my problem, determined that some coins had dropped through a hole in my cup holder into the working parts of the transmission, and that I needed a new cable because of the damage that it had caused. The problem was solved in a few hours with very little expense and has run well since then. I had been expecting a similar estimate as I had been given before, so this gentleman could have easily taken advantage of that fact. I have recommended this shop to several people since then, and would not consider any other place for this kind of work.
