The technicians were nice when I arrived, but there was another customer with her kids trying to pick up a pair of glasses and there were lots of problems with her order, which should have been my first red flag. She'd received a text saying her son's glasses were ready and not only were they not ready, but the wrong glasses had been ordered. I filled out paperwork and waited for my exam as their mess. They told me another guy who was there when I arrived was ahead of me for an exam and they were running a bit late, but it was the end of the day, so understandable. I ended up getting waved into my exam ahead of him, which was perhaps another red flag.
To be fair, it was my first time at this center and I had forgotten my old prescription info. They did not act like this was a problem. The exam was super quick and the doctor went from brusque to rude. It's hard when you meet someone for the first time and have no contacts in and literally cannot see them across the room, but he introduced himself quickly and jumped into the exam. Afterward, I tried to ask the doctor a question about aging and eyesight because I was wondering if I could expect a decline in my sight in my 40s, and he responded: "There's no correlation between eye health and age." I repeated the question and he just said: "No." Then I tried to clarify by saying I meant eye sight and not eye health (although how do you explain the incidence of cataracts and glaucoma in older people?!?!), and he just said: "No." "No," that was all. No attempt to try to to understand what I was asking or provide me with useful information. It was really rude and awkward. Either he was ignorant (because if you Google this question, the first response is the American Optometric Association, which says: "Beginning in the early to mid-40s, many adults may start to have problems seeing clearly at close distances, especially when reading and working on the computer." <<exactly the info I was seeking!), or else he was just a jerk. I'm going to put my money on the latter. I think he just didn't want to answer my question or engage me in conversation. I took his response as essentially: "Get the f-k out of my office."
In addition to this, one of my eyes was found to be at -5.5. He didn't have a contact at that prescription so he gave me -5. I was concerned about walking out with that and tried to tell him that I knew this was lower than what my previous prescription for that eye had been (I didn't remember the exact number but knew it was greater than -5). He told me in a voice that conveyed his annoyance: "I KNOW. That's all I have." I was shuttled out to the lobby, where the tech told me to wear the lenses for a month, one of which was not the prescription he even gave me that day, to see how they fit. I told him this was the same brand I had for five years, so I wasn't sure what kind of new information I was going to get of them with the wrong prescription. He ended up giving me daily disposables in the "right" prescription for the one eye. It actually turns out that my old prescription was -5.75, so what he prescribed me was .5 BETTER than my old prescription (I'm doubting my eye improved), and the contact he gave me was actually .75 WORSE than what I'd been wearing for about a year and a half. So, basically I walked out with a blurry left eye. I immediately got a headache, which could have either been the prescription or the stress of the experience. I have no confidence I have the right prescription now. I put my old contacts in as soon as I got home.
In the 45 minutes I was at the office, every person asked me multiple times if I was "ordering contacts or glasses today." Honestly, I would have considered ordering something from them if they had provided me any kind of service. I felt like the expectation was that I make an order, regardless of the quality of service. I needed contacts immediately, but also need new glasses soon and they looked like they had a good selection, with Ray Bans and other popular brands. I shop at this Target probably once a month. But I didn't get the impression that this office had any interest in my health. I got the sense that making sales and doing damage control was the main routine, hence the five daily contacts I got for my one eye — which is just not convenient or practical when you have a monthly lens from another brand in the other eye. I don't even know what to do now because insurance pays for one exam annually and I really don't want to order contacts or glasses from anyone, especially their office, based on this prescription.
The next day I also got an email from them with an appointment for my annual exam next year. They didn't schedule this with me in person or ask what times I preferred. Needless to say I will not be going back.
The experience in the lobby and with the administrative portion was a little time consuming and a little frustrating. The computers took an awful long time to process, and I was sitting there waiting for what seemed like forever while the system caught up. I was taken to three different computers/terminals while the lady tried to get the information to work and come up.
I chose this location because it's where my insurance provider recommended, and I liked the eye doctor and will be back, but I didn't feel the service was as expedient and as efficient as it could be.
"The entire staff has left that location. Dr Swift is currently at Moody Eye Care and the opticians have went to work for J C Penny Optical. Jeremy is now managing the JC Penny Optical in the Castleton Square Mall. 317-842-2290."
