We had an experience similar to other reviewers. SWAT installed a radon system in our home in early 2012. A few days ago, we noticed it making a sound it's never made before. We called to have someone come take a look and over the phone, the service tech told us it was the fan, that the part was covered under warranty, but that installing the part would be $200. To make matters worse, they wanted $200 just to come to the house to see if that was even the problem. Without arguing, I told the service tech that I'd like to check my paperwork to confirm what he was telling me about the warranty and he snapped at me that the paperwork would say the exact same thing. It might say the same thing, but becoming rude and beligerent because a customer wants to verify what you're telling them is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. He became even more rude when I told him I had a former certified radon tech out to our house who told me the unit was not installed properly. He raised his voice and essentially told me that the other radon tech couldn't possibly know what he was talking about.
Many other radon companies, including the one we're going to use, have "A" ratings. Use one of them. There is a reason this company doesn't get higher reviews. For the record, when we called one of the companies with an "A" rating and told them about our situation, they GUESSED that we were talking about SWAT. SWAT is the first name that came up when we mentioned a bad experience with a radon contractor. They use cheap parts and then charge to replace them later, which was exactly our experience.
"I would like to apologize for any inappropriate behavior from any staff member in this office, that is not how someone should communicate with a customer. I understand having to pay a service fee can be difficult at times, but our warranties clearly state that you have a 5 year Manufacturer warranty on the fan. The only thing covered is the component not our technicians labor (which is standard for most radon mitigation companies), the techs are paid per job not hourly or salary which is why we have to charge, now if our tech stated the system was installed wrong then you would not pay anything because of the workmanship warranty. I am the Director in the Service department and value each one of our customers and do agree this is not how this call should have went. I would be happy to work with you the best I can in order to resolve this, please call me at 517-908-3269. I want to assure you the equipment we use is not faulty, we use Radon Away which is the top supplier in the US. These fans can go out anywhere from 1 -10 years, this is not something we can control it runs 24/7 and depending on your homes underground conditions, some will work harder than others which can cause them to go out quicker than others. We get several calls daily from customers with 3rd party systems that no longer work and no one is helping them, but we do and that is what I would like to do for you. I am again very sorry for your experience please reach out to me when you get a chance."
"I was never informed about this issue or received a call. If this issue has not been resolved, please call me directly at 517-908-3269 My name is Ashley and I am the Director in the Service department. Please let me know if there is anything I can do."
"The appointment was scheduled form March 25th, the customer cancelled the appointment on March 19th. Because the cancellation was more than 24 hours before the appointment, there were no cancellation fees accessed. ---NO WORK WAS PERFORMED, AND NO FEES CHARGED TO THE CUSTOMER."
"I would like to apologize for any inconvenience our company has caused. We definitely stand behind our work and will always make sure the customers issue are resolved. I have not received a call back about this and definitely would be willing to help rectify the situation the best I can. If there is still an issue here please call me directly at 517-908-3269. I am the Director for the Service department, my name is Ashley please let me know if there is anything I can do."
"Sorry for the poor experience with our company. A new, replacement fan was offered, however, I am seeing that the customer did not want the new fan. The sounds heard due to the system, were sounds that are common with Radon Mitigation Systems."
SWAT installed the system, and left. Fast forward to the next rainstorm, on October 31st 2013. This storm had high winds and heavy rain. I ended up with a soaked patch of ceiling in my garage right next to the radon system. At this point, I did not immediately blame the radon system, because it was possible the storm had damaged the roof. USAA, my home insurer, sent out a licensed contractor/inspector to assess any damages. THERE WERE NONE. The storm did not damage the roof one bit.
On the other hand, the inspector notified me that the rubber boot installed on the radon pipe was not fully seated, causing a buckle in the rubber and a deflection in the shingles. We had found our source of the leak. Makes sense anyways, considering I had the roof fully inspected by a 30+ year certified inspector prior to purchasing this $400,000 home built in 2009. The roof was pretty much brand new. Low and behold, after SWAT ENVIRONMENTAL cuts a hole in my roof, water leaks in and soaks my drywall ceiling, causing the plaster to fall off and everything.
This is disappointing, but at this point, SWAT could still prove to be a great company and fix their substandard installation. Or not. Every time I call this place, someone with an attitude answers the phone. I don't call in with any attitude either, because I know an irate customer is not going to get treated well. I explain the whole situation, and am told bluntly. "You think it's our fault? I'd like to see these pictures." The undertone of the conversation is 'we have your money, you have no proof, and we don't care.'
I have emailed the pictures to SWAT 3 times IN THE LAST MONTH and have gotten NO REPLY. This is not acceptable.
This evening I find the warranty sheet that was left with my wife. No joke, it releases SWAT from liability from defects in workmanship, damages caused by faulty installation, pretty much everything under the sun. This company does not stand behind their workmanship, at all. They don't even attempt to.
Long story short: SWAT Environmental half-assed a radon mitigation install on my $400,000 home causing $750 in damages, and they this is acceptable business, hilarious in fact. Now I have to pay more than the Radon system cost to repair my home from their lack of competence.
