"The homeowner was scheduled for service the week after calling to report a recent bad smell from her fireplace and elevated carbon monoxide levels. The glass panel was missing from the direct-vent fireplace that had been installed over two years ago. All direct-vents are sealed, using a ventilation system designed to pull outside air in for combustion and exhaust combusted gas. They require and include a fixed glass panel. Gas fumes will spill inside the home if the panel is not on securely. Additionally, cold outside air would also flow inside the house without the glass in place. This would occur immediately, not two years after. It was apparent the decorative screen front had been removed and painted, so it would be reasonable to assume the glass was removed to be cleaned. The homeowner initially thought they never had the glass. However, her husband thought he had it inside his garage, but was unable to locate it. Since the fireplace is unsafe to use, it was not serviced and they were not charged for the appointment. They were instructed to order a new glass panel and promptly provided the part number to do so. As far as we know, they ordered the glass through the same company who sold them their fireplace and certainly have no control over the cost. The homeowner did not appear to be upset or angry, so we were surprised to read the comments posted and needed to address the inaccuracies."
