I would tell a member of Angie's List or a friend not to call them and that they will probably be disappointed. They cannot determine the cause of a chimney leak. They will just rebuild your chimney and charge you thousands and thousands of dollars for nothing.

They removed all brick on old chimney down to the roof and rebuilt.

Shackelford is an outstanding company that I would not hesitate to use again. They over-delivered on their quote, and the quality of their work - with multiple projects - was spectacular. Moreover, the workers were friendly, and they went out of their way to do other things that needed to be done. This is an old fashioned company that knows how to deliver a quality product.

They did a wonderful job! They came when they were suppose to, cleaned up each day, and were very pleasant. The price was good compared to the other companies that I contacted. I was very pleased. Mine looks much better than my neighbors who recently had their chimney repaired by another company.

In July 2009, a rain storm resulted in another leak into our garage in the exact same location. After several attempts to contact him, Bob Shackelford returned our call. He sent an employee who (without our knowledge or consent) caulked the cracks in the counter-flashing and informed us that the leak had been repaired. Water damage in our garage continued with added rainfall, and two roofing companies informed us that the flashing for which we had paid Shackelford $650 had never been replaced. Shackelford minimized this as an “error.” One of the roofing companies noted other possible sources of leakage, pointing out multiple areas of concern relating to Shackelford’s workmanship on the chimney itself, in particular defects and cracks in the brick, receding mortar on the corner of the crown, and 60 problems with the mortar that required tuck pointing. We again had difficulty contacting Bob. When we finally did speak with him, he was unwilling to consider the possibility that there was any problem with his company’s work and portrayed us as complainers. He was hostile, angry, and accusatory without ever having come to our home to inspect the work himself. Bob and Steve Shackelford finally came to our house on August 12 and admitted their company utilized inferior quality bricks and poorly prepared mortar. They also acknowledged that the flashing had never been replaced and that the chimney had been so poorly built that it should be replaced in its entirety. Shackelford offered to redo the chimney, this time using high quality brick. But by this time, we had lost all trust in his company for six reasons: (1) They pocketed payment for the flashing job and pretended it had been done; (2) They minimized this failure to do the work as a mere “error”; (3) Even once they were alerted to the fact that the chimney was leaking, they did not reveal that the flashing had not been replaced; (4) They were unresponsive to our calls, and when we finally spoke with them they were dismissive, argumentative, and accusatory; (5) They utilized substandard bricks and mortar and demonstrated poor quality workmanship; and (6) They insisted on repairing the damaged areas of our garage themselves rather than hiring experts. In short, we lost all faith in Shackelford’s honesty and integrity. We were not confident that they would provide us with the quality chimney they had originally promised, nor were we comfortable with doing further business with individuals who are unreceptive and argumentative. Thus we decided to hire another company in whose responsiveness, integrity, and quality materials and workmanship we were more confident. In three letters, we asked Shackelford to compensate us the money we paid them and to reimburse us for the expenses we are incurring as a consequence of their negligence and poor workmanship. They offered to pay only $1,400 and excluded the cost of repairing damages and wrapping the chimney in a protective tarp. We believe that Shackelford should reimburse us $3,110 -- the entire amount we paid them ($2,410), the cost of wrapping our chimney to prevent further damage ($225), and the cost of repairing our garage ($475). Our last letter to Shackelford gave them a deadline of November 6, and as of November 12 they have not replied.
Response from SHACKELFORD MASONRY INC
"We contracted to replace the chimney in question. After the contract was received and the work order was placed in our system, the customer added the option to have the flashing replaced which they had originally opted not to do. Because of that, the flashing was not part of the original work order and was not done. We did however, replace the counter flashing; it was our mistake and we never denied that. About a year later, when we were notified by the customer of a problem, it took a little time to investigate what had actually occurred as we have several people who do flashing for us. As soon as I had all the information relative to the job, I called the members to explain everything and told them I would make it right. They did not seem to be interested in having us correct the situation. Aside from being difficult to communicate with, they were both on different extensions at the same time telling me what an irresponsible company we are and how we tried to “rip them off”. After allowing a couple of days for a cooling-off period, I called and made arrangements to meet with them at which time, my brother and I went to their home and looked at the job. In order to be as accommodating as possible, we agreed to completely redo the job although it was not necessary as we wanted to go the extra mile. We agreed to use a commercial brick instead of the brick that was a near perfect match to their house. We agreed to do the chimney work personally as well as repairing the garage ceiling. We thought they couldn’t say no to that, but we were wrong. They acted like our offer was acceptable but would not give us a firm answer. I told them I would bring them brick samples which I did, a couple days later. At that point, I noticed a tarp around the chimney and when I called two days later, I was told they were going to have someone else do the work. Shortly afterwords, I received a letter demanding we pay them $3,600.00 which I felt was very unreasonable for several reasons. 1. I was willing to make good on our agreement and then some. 2. Part of the cost was $250.00 for a $20.00 tarp around the chimney that wouldn’t stop the flashing lead, anyway. 3. When I saw the garage ceiling initially, there was a small water spot that would be a minuscule repair. I don’t know what it looks like now, but had we been allowed to do the work then instead of waiting until now, it wouldn’t have gotten worse. 4. The price they received from someone else was exorbitant and unreasonable. I responded that I would complete all the work as agreed and guarantee everything for ten years, or I would pay them my cost of the work. Next, I got a letter demanding $5,500.00 which I ignored; that brings us to where we are now. We have always been willing to resolve this issue, but we will not be extorted. We made an offer that was more fair and more legally required. We are willing to go to arbitration because I believe we went far and above being reasonable. After 35 years in business and thousands of happy customers, we have found someone who refuses to be pleased. If they refuse to settle the matter equitably, then I guess we will have one unhappy customer. I don’t like it, but I am convinced that no matter what happens next, they will still be unhappy. Bob Shackelford, General Manager"

They did what they promised. They did not add to the cost later in the project when some unknown problems revealed themselves during the project. I thought that the quality of their work was outstanding. I found them on Angie's List and I was very pleased that they matched the previous ratings very well.

Tom Shackelford was very prompt in providing an estimate. His bid was 1/5th that of other competitors for the same work. When I asked him if he might have overlooked anything and to describe why the bids were different, he answered very 'matter of fact' that the others were simply overcharging for the work and he would guarantee his price. They called to schedule the work in advance, arrived promptly, were very careful to cover all surfaces (driveway, sidewalks, roof), used padding under scaffolds to protect the roof and were very thorough in the repair. While waiting on mortar to set on the chimney, the crew walked around the house and tuck pointed/repaired any visible cracks in the masonry at no extra cost. They cleaned up the job site thoroughly and we've had no issues with the work.

I was very surprised they were able to do it in one day. I was having a new roof installed but I had to have the chimney repaired before the roof was put on. There was about 3 or 4 people. I was very pleased with their work.

The crew was very professional. They did a nice job, but missed about seven broken pavers. This may have been my fault since I apparently did not set out enough extra used pavers. I thought they knew where the pile of pavers were located, but maybe they did not. Either way, when I brought this issue to Mr. Shackleford's attention, a crew was out promptly the next morning with instructions to do whatever was necessary to get the job done to my complete satisfaction. They replaced the remaining broken pavers and even did a little extra work on one area of the other sidewalk. I was very pleased.

THEY WERE TIMELY IN RETURN CALLS AND ESTIMATING. THE OFFICE MANAGER WAS PARTICULARLY FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT. ONCE THEIR BID WAS ACCEPTED THE WORK WAS COMPLETED IN A TIMELY AND PROFESSIONAL MANNER. ALL THE OTHER MASONS SAID WHAT THEY DID COULDN'T BE DONE AND GAVE ME BIDS 2-3X MORE. ONLY TIME WILL TELL, BUT CURRENTLY IT LOOKS FINE.

I FIRST STARTED DEALING WITH BOB SHACKELFORD IN 2002 AND GOT AN ESTIMATE FOR THE FRONT ENTRANCE SIGNS. TWO YEARS LATER, AFTER ASSESSING RESIDENTS FROM OUR HOMEOWNER'S ASSOCIATION FOR FUNDS, WE HAD THE MONEY AVAILABLE TO GO FORWARD WITH THE PROJECT. HE HONORED THAT SAME ESTIMATE TWO YEARS LATER. AFTER DOING THE WORK, HE EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. I WAS ABSOLUTELY THRILLED WITH THE JOB THEY DID. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM AND I WOULDN'T HESITATE TO HIRE THEM AGAIN.
