Major Home Repair (General Contractor)

Redid floors. Took out a wall and opened up door ways to ceiling on main floor. Refinished stairs. Got all the work done before we moved in on a tight timeline. Everything worked out great! Gray was easy to work with and nice to hangout with.

My Home In Indy - Gary did a wonderful job overall, the quality of work was excellent and we're extremely satisfied with the final work done. As feels typical with construction work the time line ended up being extended beyond what was initially anticipated, so simply factor this into your decision and you'll be really pleased with the end work performed.

My husband is in a wheel chair and needed his den remodeled for his needs. Gary & Kevin designed and custom built bookcases, counters, and drawers for him. The work is beautifully done! We also did a hall bath remodel which went well and we were pleased. We have worked with Gary on two other major home projects and we know we can trust him as a great contractor.

Gary & his crew repaired the beautiful, decorative front porch of my historic Georgian Colonial Meridian Kessler home. This required removing the heavy parapet, replacing its rotted supporting columns with a non-wood material, and fabrication of matching trim molding. The failed 100-year old tar and asphalt roof was then replaced with a modern membrane, and the copper work redone. The parapet was then reconstructed on the new roof. Gary kept me informed throughout the renovation process. The work was done well, on time and for a reasonable price. I would strongly recommend his company for any renovation projects, especially those involving custom work.

It's been 2.5 years since our project completed. The project went well over the estimated time period and involved significant rework by My Home Indy during the project. This included re laying of flooring because it was not level. The paint quality was poor and lacked good finishes. They cut corners by not using door and trim paint in the appropriate parts. Most concerning is the poor quality of tile work done in our master shower. My Home Indy did not properly seal the grout in the master shower. This has resulted in mold issues that will require us to redo the flooring in our custom master shower.

We had My Home In Indy (Gary Vickrey) for the project manager to handle the carpentry, electrical, plumbing and tile installation for remodeling our kitchen. We purchased the appliances and contracted the quartz counter top portions ourselves. We did not replace our cabinets, but did make modifications as described below. Gary's craftsmen were excellent, especially the carpenter (Kevin) and tile installer (Nick). Kevin had to modify two cabinets to accommodate the new double oven and microwave drawer plus he modified two drawers and installed wood bevels under the cabinets to hide the new under-cabinet lighting and power strips. My wife decided to go with a herring bone design for the tile on the walls above the counter tops, which required precision cutting and placement. Nick did an outstanding job. We converted the existing electric cook top to gas. The plumber ran a new gas line plus changed three water shut-off valves under the sink. The electrical crew was either three or four craftsmen depending on the work being done that day. They had to run two new power lines from the main junction box in the garage, convert one 220v line to a 110v line, move the existing power switches on the walls above the counter tops to under the cabinets and install several LED light boxes under the cabinets. They also installed new lighting over the island. This was the largest portion of the labor and cost by My Home In Indy. We told Gary that we wanted the project completed by September 1. The work was completed one week ahead of that date. The overall project cost was $31,000, of which $12,300 was the portion charged by My Home In Indy. I'm glad I used a project manager rather than sub-contract everything myself. Gary was an excellent choice.

We completely re-did our kitchen. We removed all cabinets and existing lath/plaster walls. Tore down an entry wall. We re-configured an awkward entry way which had a low ceiling breakfast nook, side door entry, and also garage door entry; we turned it into a flowing kitchen space which required increasing our square footage a bit and pouring some concrete outside the house and raising the ceiling. There was a lot of new electrical work done to add a multitude of under cabinet lighting, under cabinet outlets, can lights, sink light, garbage disposal, dishwasher, RO water system, and outlets outside the house and in the garage as well. Along the way, Gary found some sagging floor issues which he fixed with extra support in the basement. We added all new cabinets and a farmhouse sink as well. We love our kitchen! All in all, there was a LOT of work that was done. Gary worked with us to get us exactly what we wanted for a budget we were comfortable with. We had other contractors come out and quote the job and some told us it wasn't possible (via crazy high quotes) or tried to convince us to configure our space differently (easier for them). He pointed out things we could do ourselves to save money, such as demolition, painting, insulation, and a handful of other things. He was there to supervise and make sure we didn't do anything incorrectly. Gary is very responsive and very honest. I'm writing this review a few years after he remodeled the kitchen. Just last week, our pull-out trash can slides quit working, which wasn't his fault. They just broke. But he came over the same day I texted him and had the problem diagnosed. He fixed it within 24 hours of getting the replacement parts at no charge. That is a great example of Gary's personality and pride in his work.

The project grew as related issues surfaced during the project resulting in additional cost and time. (Not their fault!) We couldn't be happier with the results.

He did a design consultation and he was great. They wrote me up an estimate of what it would be for them to do the remodel but it was more than I had expected so I didn't happen to do that. But they took the time to write up an estimate. They came about a week after the purchase. He didn't charge me anything else. He was just very friendly, very professional and very helpful. He had ideas. The consultation they provided was very detailed.

It was an Angie's List $49 special. We still haven't gotten the plan yet. He spent a lot of time with us and seemed like a really nice guy, but was very slow. He came back and asked questions on the things we had spent an hour talking about because he never really understood what we said. We are actually not too happy about that. He still has not gotten back to us with his plan. He has sent us a couple of questions but they are real basic questions that we had already spent time talking about. It was like he did not take notes, didn't remember or I don't know what it was. It took him a while to actually get back to us because he said he was getting so many calls because of Angie's List, which is fine, we understand that, but it has been a long time and he still has not gotten back to us with an actual plan. The questions he sent to us by email made us wonder if we had spent an hour when he was here and wasted our time. At this point I am kind of disappointed. He spent a long time with us and it went very well. He seemed to know his business and had good ideas, but there has been no follow up and the questions he asked us seemed to indicate that he was not paying attention. So it is a mixed bag. He came when he said he was going to come.

Response from My Home In Indy
"Doing those $49 design contacts thru Angie's List ended up being a real problem to me because too many of them came to me quickly and I couldn't keep up and then I get a negative review like this - doing my best"

thought I hired a contractor to deal with all the details, scheduling, and making sure the work was completed on time – this was not the case. Gary came out for the estimate 2 days after I contacted him, but took 3-4 weeks to provide the estimate, and only after I followed up. Once he provided the estimate, he seemed very eager to start. We started the project right away and things moved very quickly for the first 3 weeks (Gary estimated the project would take 3 weeks). At this point Gary asked for a check for about half of the estimate and said he would send over an updated invoice. I gave him a check and asked when the project would be completed, but I received no answer or updated invoice for over 2 weeks, it seemed he just lost interest in finishing the project. During those 2 weeks, we had about one day’s worth of work done and then Gary asked for another check which was well over what the balance was on the project. I then received an updated invoice that had increased about 15% from the original estimate – until that point Gary had only communicated that the project was going to increase 3%. A week went by with only one more days’ worth of work completed. I had 3 weeks left until I absolutely needed the project to get done for something I am hosting which Gary knew about. I finally pressured Gary into finishing the project 8 weeks after it started. On top of the slow work, Gary did not have smaller items fixed for us. They removed built-in shelving to get into a wall, but did not replace the shelves. They added a door, but they didn’t add flooring to the area, so you could see into our crawlspace. I have taken care of these things, but it would have been nice for them to do the finishing touches. The electrician and plumber he hired did great work. I was not impressed with the drywallers, their work was not smooth and the replaced walls were warped. There was a point where Gary asked US what was left to get the project done. His invoices are very detailed, which is nice except you can tell he is not paying much attention to what is actually going on at the job. I definitely will not be recommending Gary even though things started off so well.
Response from My Home In Indy
"Wow, I obviously do this for a living and [Member Name Removed] has a total different take on how everything went. There were a couple of burps but I was mainly in touch with her husband. For instance the flooring in the doorway I communicated with her husband about the need for piece of matching vinyl flooring which they didn't have and could not find at the Home Store so he decided to patch it in his self. The finish looks great. Not sure where she is coming up with the percentages typically the only increases in the final number is created by the Clients changes."

This is the third remodeling job we have worked with Gary on, and we have always been pleased. This job involved adding a full bathroom and custom closet to an unfinished space in our basement. The results are beautiful, and all of the work is high quality. Remodeling older homes can be unpredictable, but Gary was always responsive and worked through issues to resolution. The initial estimate was accurate, and comparable to other estimates we received. He kept us informed along the way on costs as changes were made. Overall, we are very happy with the final outcome and would recommend My Home in Indy.

We are very pleased with out kitchen remodel. Due to some unforeseen issues and the addition of a few extra changes the project took longer than originally estimated, but it was done by the date that we needed it to be completed. The kitchen was gutted and remodeled with beautiful new cabinets, counter tops, flooring, tile back splash, and lighting. We chose Gary over other companies because of his familiarity with older homes in the Broad Ripple area and his knowledge of what to expect when working in a house like ours. His contractors do excellent work.

I have hired Gary Vickrey of My Home In Indy twice.  The first time was in 2010 and I had him build a 500 square foot room addition on my house in Broad Ripple.  Gary's price was competitive, and his work was on-schedule and high-quality. So, when a neighbor's large tree fell recently fell on that room addition, I called Gary back.  The tree damaged several portions of the roof decking and framing, requiring extensive repairs.  Gary doesn't normally do insurance repair work, but he met with the adjuster and provided the documentation they requested.  Once the insurance company processed my claim, Gary got the work done quickly.
Gary is easy to reach on the phone, returns messages promptly, provides detailed estimates/bids and his subs do good work.  I have recommended Gary to many friends and neighbors and will continue to.

dualWe love our new kitchen.  There were a few snags due to communication between the different contractors.  The main contractor listened carefully to my ideas and responded.  Main problem came with the individuals who were contracted to due the various tasks.
Response from My Home In Indy
"I use the same contractors on every job and have done so for years. The only time someone thinks like this is when they don't work and they get involved in conversations probably not meant for them. My contractors have been around each other for years and are very easy to get along with. The project went really well and we added some built in pantry and china cabinets which added old house character. [Member Name Removed] was a very nice person to work with. They are very pleased with the final product."
