In a state of panic in the middle of the night - my husband and I were able to call Indy Vet Emergency & Specialty Hospital and we spoke to Megan who was one of the vet techs. We let her know our Yorkies' condition and she very calmly let us know, that they will be able to take care of our Yorkie, there office location and told us the examination fee up front ($89.00). Twenty minutes later we were greeted at the door by Megan, who was able to take our dog quickly back to an examination room. She had us fill out some paperwork and then lead us into our own waiting room.
The waiting rooms were relaxing. They had a TV that we were able to watch to calm our nerves while they were testing our dog. Shortly after arriving, Dr. Goldman came into the room and let us know that our dogs reflexes, pupils, heart rate, temp and respiratory rate was normal. With that being a good sign, she was then able to ask us everything that had happened. She listened very well and was able to give us a list of things that she thought it could have been. She recommended that the symptoms sounded like he had a seizure due to hitting his head. Dr. Goldman made a recommendation that they cold keep him there for 24 hours and they would be able to monitor him to see if any of the symptoms came back. We opted out of leaving him there without us since he is like our child. We asked her if there was any other alternative. She said that they could run some blood work (cost about $207) and those tests would be finished in about 30 minutes. We decided to go with the blood work test.
Shortly after drawling his blood, a very nice and friendly vet tech brought our Yorkie into our waiting room so that he could wait with us. He acted like nothing had happened less than an hour ago and he was back to his normal self. Then Dr. Goldman came back in and let us know that the blood work came back great and she said everything looked just fine. She mentioned no medication, but mentioned that we should keep a close eye on him. She definitely let us know that due to him hitting his head, his symptoms lead to a seizure. I am so glad to know that during this traumatic instance, everyone at Indy Vet really took care of not only our Yorkie, but also my husband and I.
They also gave me a print-out of what was done, along with instructions about medication, what to look for if there would be any changes, & when the next appt. is to be.
Prices seem alittle high, but probably comparable to other places. I just think vets in general, have gotten out of hand with prices. But @ least they offer payment options. And like most doctors, they tend to run late!
They got her back on her feet but she was never the same and had to remain on high doses of prednisone to prevent and quot;mouth dropand quot;. I am comfortable in knowing that they did everything possible which was all I asked. Yes, emergency care is very expensive and it was a hardship for me. But we can't put a price on our beloved furry friends. Unfortunately sometimes the money just isn't there so please don't feel guilty if you find yourself in that situation. You can only do your best for your friend and sometimes there are just limits. Your love for your pet is the most important gift you can give to them.
The clinic also runs a blood donation division and my Shepherd/Rottie donated to that on a regular basis. It was good to know I could give back in some way and perhaps save another dogs life. I highly recommend participating in this important program. I wouldn't say my Vet's bedside manner was the most charming but again, that wasn't why I was there. I wanted the best care I could provide. The staff have always been wonderful espeically the gals running the Blood Donation program. In an emergency, IVEC is the only place I woiuld go.About a year later, I came home to find my dog having seizures and vomiting blood and I knew I had to rush her to the closest vet possible, which was unfortunately this particular clinic. Keep in mind, my dog was very elderly and I was well aware her time had come. They were quick to take her from me and rushed her to a room on one side of the clinic and took me to a different room on the other side. Needless to say, I was hysterical and upset.
A doctor came to my room and explained it was best to put her to sleep, which I figured was going to be my only option. I had her euthanized and asked for her to be cremated. Before I left, they handed me a bill for over $600.00. The price was outrageous! Not only had I just lost my best friend, but now I'm getting slammed with a bill that included "Vet Inspection/Check-up". What was there to check up and charge me $300 alone?
The cremation itself was the cheapest part of that bill because they ship your pet elsewhere for that service. Had I been able to take my dog to my normal vet, the same visit would have cost me maybe $50. I would never recommend this vet to anyone. Unfortunately, they are the only vet open after hours and they make you pay for it. They are heartless robots, no sympathy or emotion that take advantage of people in despair with ailing pets.
Luckily my dog is fine now, thanks to my own vet. But because of IVEC's misdiagnosis or incompetence, I put her through an unnecessary surgery which was quite extensive.
I was pleased with the experience. Yes, it was expensive but it was after regular vet hours. The only improvement that could be made would be to have the doctor talk with the owners more promptly, both at admission and during the time he was there.
The front desk is the best of their staff. They are patient and answer many questions.
I've been there at 4 am with a dog who had seizures. They kept him for 12 hours. As I went to visit the next afternoon I heard the vet, through the door, say she wouldn't let him go home that I was only to visit. I knew right then he would be going home with me.
I've been there as my dog was bleeding from the nose. After more than an hour in the waiting room, I went to the front where they said and quot; What, the doctor hasn't seen you?and quot; This was after I saw the doctor go into the room of another client who had arrived 20 minutes after me. They did pull another vet from the back to come see us.
On the other hand, they have filled prescriptions when my regular vet isn't open or is too far to drive. They do hold a wonderful party in July. They have a extensive diagnostic equipment.
I wouldn't use them to replace a regular vet as they are more expensive, but in a pinch you can get service.
