The job went very smoothly indeed. Chris and Joe were professional, punctual, and very easy to work with. They were both sensitive to our plans and fears (you know you have them when you have this big a project) and sensitive to our budget.
They were also creative in their solutions, which is something you certainly want but don't always find you have in remodeling help. For example, we mentioned our basement, which was remodeled into both a study and a storage area, neither of which we ever thought we'd have, and the aforementioned amazing "dog spa," solving the problem of how to invite company who don't love your dogs as much as you do. They also suggested some features we wouldn't have thought to request, for example, they rewired our computers and TVs, achieving a synchrony we hadn't expected and have so much enjoyed.
They solved any problems that came up quickly and well. The quality of their work was exceptionally high. We recommend them very highly; if we needed to have any further work done, we will definitely call Green Men Restoration and know we would be lucky to have them.
We called Chris from Green Men to come out and give us a quote. I explained that the previous painter had power washed then started to paint within a day and I suspected this was why our paint was peeling. Chris confirmed that this can happen with power washing, if it is not given adequate time to dry. The quote was for hand washing the exterior wood, scraping as much of the paint off as possible (down to bare wood in a lot of areas), priming, painting, and replacing 4 known sections of rotted wood for $4000. The price seemed a little high at first, but knowing now the amount of preparation before the painting even started it was very reasonable. Chris also suggested some colours to make our house pop a little more, we had previously just had flat white, so this made the job a little more fun for us than just a maintenance job.
Chris and his crew started on the morning of the agreed day with the scraping and washing. As the job progressed there were 4 more areas of wood to change, but they always checked and gave an amount extra it would cost, or give us the option of painting over it with some basic repair. My wife also requested for them to encase the turned pillars on our front porch, which they did with cedar boards. Their attention to detail was impeccable, and they requested our feedback at every step to make sure we were happy with the work. The end job wasn't just a quick maintenance job, but a transformation of the house that was worth every penny!
The pillars were $800 extra that was not in the original quote and as I mentioned they always asked about extra work before going ahead with it, so the overage was about $400 (or 10%), and wouldn't have been that high if we asked them not to do the extra wood replacements.
Chris and Joe, the proprietors and main workers at Green Men Restoration, were thorough, thoughtful, checked at every point with us about choices, punctual (they finished the job a little early, and they had scheduled it very promptly in the first place), and cleaned up at every point. They both work a very full day, starting early and remaining sometimes till sundown. They are both meticulous, making exterior painting seem like a craft.
Both Chris and Joe are pleasant and easy to work with. They explain their recommendations well, while always respecting individual choices. They involved us in every aspect of the job.
Chris is especially knowledgeable about (and licensed to evaluate) EPA issues, so that he was able to evaluate our old paint for lead and take measures to make sure his job did not cause old paint to contaminate our yard or our community.
For the first time, we have had many neighbors come by to tell us how wonderful our home looks. Chris is also an artist, so he uses his painter's eye to choose the best color scheme and remodeling scheme. He also painted our basketball backboard at our request. We now have the only backboard that we know of with an abstract expressionist design. We couldn't be happier.
