Since Geist Remodeling is just that, a bigger remodeling company, I knew coming in they would be sub-contracting the work to a crew and not personally doing it themselves like some of the other companies. Being that our agreement was finalized with very short notice (they started less than a week after I received the quote), I was somewhat worried about the type of crew/people they would have working on my house. I was concerned they would would have to hire the work completely out just to get the job. But, it didn't take me long to feel a lot better about the situation/crew. From day one they were punctual, super polite and professional. They've worked fairly quietly....quiet enough to not be a bother while working above them from my home office. In fact, the faint Mexican music put some pep in my work :). They've done a fabulous job cleaning up any messes left in my garage/main floor left while coming in and out of the house. They did a good job covering most things (furnace/personal items) in the basement area not being finished, and the work they've done has been both high quality and high paced. I am especially pleased with the mud and tape job they appear to be doing. They seem to be doing a lot of layers of mudding, then sanding, repeat (lots of trips to the house while the mud dries over night), and they have taken (properly) the mud strips increasingly wider each time they sand then re-mud the seems to ensure the seems are gradually feathered into the wall. That's how it should be done, but they appear to be really taking their time to ensure that is done correctly......better than I had hoped.
Even though the job is not yet finished, I have enough trust in these guys and their work (and their willingness to follow-up with any issues that may arise after) that I'm submitting my review ahead of time. Although Geist Remodeling was somewhat aloof in the beginning, they have been super responsive and great in their communication since having them out for an estimate. This is why I gave them an A for responsiveness in spite of a slow start. In fact, one of the crew cut a 35 ft HDMI cord ran through the ceiling from one side of the room to another. I called them for about the issue, as well as another concern, and they were at my house almost immediately working to resolve the issues. By the next day, the damaged HDMI cord had been replaced with the same exact wire from Amazon. Although the avoidable set back was somewhat annoying at first, in the grand scheme of things it was very minor accident that was easily fixed. The good thing that came from the mistake was I got to see how his crew handled it. The HDMI that was cut was a secondary cord (there in case we want to hook up a blue ray player or something) and was only slightly cut. There is a chance they could have taped the cord up, hid it in the wall, and gotten away with it. But they didn't do that. Not only did they immediately bring it to my attention, but they were genuinely apologetic and sorry for it (even though it was a fairly easy fix). That gained my trust and appreciation for the character of the crew and the owner.
The only complaints I've had so far is the issue of hanging the drywall itself. For starters, I told both owners, and the SV on the job where i wanted the green board drywall placed and where i wanted the regular drywall placed. Even after telling 3 people, and then telling the crew separately once I realized they were doing it wrong, the drywall was still hung wrong. That said, they eventually tore it all down and redid it even though I was not pushing very hard for them to do so. So, that complaint was quickly resolved as soon as it was brought to their attention and I'm very happy with how it turned out. The other thing is they didn't exactly hang the drywall in the order I would have, and they appeared to use a lot more nails (higher risk for nail pops down the road) than I've done on my own drywall projects. I figured with the number of people they had hanging drywall, there would have been fewer support nails here and there to help hold while they screwed in the rest, but it appears as though almost the entire boarder of every panel was nailed down. Not saying it is wrong, but just not my preference/perhaps not the best way of doing it when it comes to preventing future nail pops. In either case, Geist Remodeling has been quick to assure me there won't be any issues and they'll stand by the work and will have no problems rectifying any issues later should something pop up (pun intended). Since everybody involved has been great to work with so far, and everyone appears to be primarily concerned with doing the job right and customer satisfaction, I have no reason to believe they won't deliver. So, I still gave them an A for excellent.
That said, I'm very happy with the work being done and my choice to go with GR. I will certainly look to them for future projects as well. I gave them A's across the board on all ratings, even 'Price' which I don't normally do. Their price was good....it wasn't the cheapest, it wasn't the lowest, it wasn't what I wish I could have paid or probably what I would pay if I had a lot more time and a connection to finding a pool of cheap labor. That said, for a realistic scenario, the average homeowner, and my short time frame - and factoring how great they have been and the quality of work their crew has done, I had to give them an A. I feel the job done to this point, in the timeframe they had to do it, is about as good as I could have asked for for the money spent.
Thanks guys!
We wanted to finish our basement in 2 phases to manage it financially, and Mark and Jim were very flexible and helpful to make this happen. They finished ahead of time, their team was on time and professional everyday for the entire month they were here, and Jim even helped to repair a problem we were having with out sink in our kitchen upstairs. A few months later, when our basement door jambs had swollen and our doors were sticking, Mark and Jim came out and fixed the doors for us.
Mark, Jim, and Dave are all very personable, honest, and exceptional in customer service, and they stand behind their work. Most importantly, our basement really turned out great. They are very skilled professionals. We will use only them for future home improvement projects.
These guys had done some serious work for us 2.5 years ago, so when we needed a couple of small projects done, we called them back. Mark got us right on the calendar and showed up ready to work that day. It's difficult to match ceiling textures but they made this patch look just like the rest of it. The garage drywall work they did was above my expectation. We are very pleased with the work and the price and the guys that did it.
The shower repair took less than a day and the shower looked brand new! They did a great job. After we were sure the shower had stopped leaking, they came back and repaired the ceiling. They even repaired and repainted a prior 'bad' spot in the ceiling from a different previous leak.
Everything was done very professionally. At my request, they came back and did a small repaint on the ceiling that was needed to match the coloring with no problem.
I would use them again in the future - maybe next time for a remodel!
On time to do the work, very reliable and always caring for what had to be
done and always a job very well done. If not right, they would do it over,
or make the job right. Very professional, and very concerned that the
job was alwas done right and to the customers satisfaction.

"This customer already sent a report July 10, 2008, soon after the work was completed. They scored us all "A's". I don't know why they are sending out another report. We haven't completed any new business since then."
