I had a great experience with this company. I was having trouble with my late 1970's Kenwood stereo receiver. It was clicking on and off when I would try to turn the unit on. The fee to diagnose the probem was $20 dollars which would be applied to any repairs. Very reasonable price. I dropped the unit off on Friday and they called Monday to give me an estimate of $90, minus the $20 already payed. They said that it was having a problem with the pcb board and would take about a week. Two days later they called and said that it was ready! Although they appear to service a wide range of newer electronics, I was ecstatic that they seemed to know how to work on the old stuff and cared about my unit. The work included a 30 day warranty on labor and 90 day warranty on parts. They really seem to know there stuff and did a great job!

I used Charlie's TV & Appliances based on many very positive "A" reviews on Angie's List. They accepted my old stereo receiver for initial troubleshooting which cost $ 20 (and is applied to repair costs), whereas all other electronics places I visited will not touch an Akai stereo. They called me within a day to say that the unit could be repaired for $ 150. Three days later I received another call that the unit was ready to be picked up (this was right after the recent ice storm !). Charlie's TV & Appliances will work on any electronic component, except for car radios (they provided me with a referral to a company in Indianapolis that does this). They are friendly. their location is easy to find, and their technicians seem to be very good at troubleshooting electronic components. I was very pleased that repairs are an integral part of their business; of course, they sell new equipment and they also have used equipment for sale.

I have an old stereo system consisting of a Receiver (AM/FM Tuner, Power Supply, and connections for several components, including a turntable for records), a turntable , and two speakers. I had a problem with output from the Receiver to the Speakers - the power would come on and after a few seconds would fade and die. After searching for someone who could (or would) analyze my problem i called Charlie's. They indicated they could do the analysis and quite likely fix the Receiver. I took the unit to them for analysis on January 25th. They called me back on January 27th, gave me a price to make the fix, and finished the work on the 29th. The unit was placed back in service two days later and is performing as good as new. Considering the cost of a new Receiver is about $300, might not have the capability of being connected directly to a turntable and the short amount of time this repair took, this was a bargain.

Contacted Charlie's via email for my first inquiry to see if they could repair a record player from the 1970's. Within 24 hours, my email was returned with an answer and information regarding their opening fee ($20). I brought the Technics record player for them to assess and repair. I did deposit the $20 opening fee for them to look at it. 2 days after the player was dropped off, I received a call saying it could be repaired (detailing what would be needed) and if I wanted, they could have it back within 7 days. I agreed and was told to expect a call within 7 days. 3 days later, I received the call stating the player was ready to be picked up. They detailed out the repairs, removing an old drive belt, and cleaning out all of the dried up grease (most likely original from the 70's). I paid the bill and found out that the $20 opening fee was applied to the final balance. I do not know whether or not the repair worked, as the player repair was a birthday present, but they seem to be competent at what they do and their customer service is top notch.

I had to take the TV to them since they wanted so much to pick up the TV. They repaired the TV and advised me I should not have any more problems, and I have not to date. The service was wonderful and the advise was great. The only problem was taking the TV to them. I would go back to them if I needed services in the future.

On January 16, 2009, after removing the main power cabinet, I took the TV to their store, instead of having them come to the home for the repair. After one week, I was called to be told the TV was fixed and ready for pick up. On Saturday, January 24, 2009, I stopped in, paid for the repair and brought the main power cabinet home. As instructed, I waited for 2 hours before installing the main unit in the cabinet. So, later in the day, I installed the main power cabinet, reconnected all the cables, etc. and turned on the TV. The TV turned on, however, the picture was "HORRIBLE". It had "ghost" images in "red" and "green". After further investigation, the manual indicated I needed to readjust the TV after a power outage or power disconnection. So, I went through all the adjustments to see if this was the problem. The picture was a little better. However, there was a "red" ghost image at the top and at the bottom of the images. It was almost like the "red convergence" was out of alignment. Prior to taking the TV to Charlie's, the picture on our TV was perfect, almost as good as an HDTV. At 8:15, early Monday morning, January 26, 2009, I contacted Charlie's about my concern. The response, "It sounds like something may have happened when the part was changed out. And, we would need the whole TV to fix that". I stated I could not bring the TV into the shop and asked for a technician to come to the house. The response, "Oh, we don't have technicians that come to the house, they only work in the shop". In other words, I would have to haul the massive TV out of my basement and into their shop for the repair, just to get the TV aligned properly. In my opinion, the TV could get jarred and back out of alignment in the moving process. After further discussion, I asked to speak with the manager/owner about my concerns. The response, "Dave is out of the country until next Saturday and won't be back into the office until Monday, February 2nd." I stated I was unhappy with their service and the response, "We can't check the "vision" on the TV when we don't have the whole TV." HELLO....Isn't the reason you take a TV into a shop to get it repaired for the "VISION". I almost laughed at the response. However, I knew I would have to wait and speak with a higher authority to get this resolved.

I took the VCR to them late Tuesday. They called with an estimate on Wednesday and had the VCR repaired by Saturday. When I first saw this place, I imagined one old guy who did repairs on TVs, but I've used them several times for repairs for a stereo, VCR, and TV. The guys are very knowledgeable, have been accurate with estimates, and have finished repairs earlier than they said. I next time I need a TV or VCR, I'm going to get a used one from these guys instead of pay for a new one.

This is an 11 year old Mitsubishi VCR with Auto Tracking, HiFi with four heads. Some features I have grown accustomed to and would prefer not to give up for a newer model. Charlie's is the closest shop with the best reputation for repairing VCR's I could find. I was very pleased to find that he could do the repair. The process for repair was straightforward. Deposit and diagnosis took 2 days, and when completed, they called me with the estimate for the repair. Another 3 days later and the job was completed. The crew was courteous, helpful, and listened to my description of the problem. I knew I was in the right place when I walked in and saw how clean the shop was. The service counter, the business cards, the shelving with other repaired units were clean with no dust accumulation. Someone is always present at the front counter to greet you when you walk in. The crew is knowledgeable and will stand behind their work.

It was a great experience with them from the very first phone conversation. I paid $20 for an estimate, which was later applied to the total owed for the work done. I MUCH prefer this to somebody giving a FREE estimate and greatly overestimating the cost of the job. They answered all of my questions and even called to give me a status on the work as it was still in process. I'm very pleased with the work they did. I'll return to them in the future if needed.

OFFICE PEOPLE VERY PLEASANT. WE TOOK IN TV. WERE TOLD THAT IT WAS $15 TO DO ESTIMATE, WERE TOLD WE WOULD BE CALLED IN A FEW DAYS AND THAT IF WE DECIDED TO GO AHEAD WITH THE WORK THAT THE $15 WOULD BE SUBTRACTED FROM THE FINAL BILL. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE POWER SUPPLY AND TOLD US IT WOULD BE ABOUT $150 AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT A WEEK. WE DECIDED TO HAVE THE WORK DONE. TV WAS DONE AHEAD OF TIME. WENT IN TO GET IT. THEY TURNED IT ON TO SHOW THAT IT WAS WORKING BEFORE WE LEFT. THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG. THEY APOLOGIZED AND THEY KEPT IT A FEW MORE DAYS TO MAKE SURE IT WAS WORKING. WE WERE GLAD THEY CHECKED IT BEFORE WE LEFT THE SHOP. THEY HELPED US GET IT BACK INTO THE CAR. IT WAS COLD OUTSIDE AND THEY TOLD US TO LET IT WARM UP IN THE HOUSE FOR ABOUT 30 MIN BEFORE TURNING IT ON BECAUSE ELECTRONICS CAN BE SENSITIVE TO TEMPERATURE. WE APPRECIATED THE ADVICE.

THE REPRESENTATIVE WAS VERY POLITE WHEN I CALLED TO SEE IF THEY COVERED THIS TYPE OF WORK. HE INFORMED ME OF THE INITIAL CHARGE FOR DIAGNOSIS, HOW LONG THE WORK USUALLY TAKES, AND THE COMPANY'S POLICY ON CREDITING THE CUSTOMER FOR THE DIAGNOSIS CHARGE IF THE WORK IS COMPLETED BY THEM. WE BROUGHT OUR TV IN THE NEXT DAY, IT WAS REPAIRED EXACTLY WHEN THEY STATED IT WOULD BE. THEY CARRIED THE TELEVISION OUT TO MY CAR FOR ME SINCE IT WAS TOO HEAVY FOR ME TO MOVE, AND ASKED ME TO CALL THEM IF I EXPERIENCED ANY DIFFICULTIES.

CHARLIE'S STAFF WAS VERY HELPFUL AND FIXED MY VCR IN A TIMELY FASHION FOR A REASONABLE PRICE. I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS TO FIND SOMEONE WHO WOULD WORK ON AN OLDER VCR, BUT CHARLIE'S REALLY CAME THROUGH. I WAS ACTUALLY REFERRED TO THEM BY ANOTHER ANGIE'S LIST PROVIDER I WAS INVESTIGATING FOR THIS JOB WHO NO LONGER DOES VCR REPAIR.
