"I am sorry but I think you must have us mixed up with another company because we didn't move a [Member name removed]"
I had decided not to do a review of this move. Just let it go. However, every day I walk by another scratch, ding, etc. and the disappointment just won't go away.
This makes the 8th time I have hired Busy Bee to assist me in a move. Residential and Business combined.
This is the 1st time I have ever been disappointed.
Almost every piece of furniture, including file cabinets, desks, & chairs, received some new nick or scratch in this move. (Busy Bee themselves have moved this same furniture a few times before with NO damage.) None of the damage was significant enough to file any claims or make a federal case out of it. Just enough to disappoint.
I gave Busy Bee a "C" because of the notion society has the C is average. This company used to be way above average and to me, average means I could have had amateurs do the same job. For some reason, unlike past moves, no padding was used when moving the furniture. Even the furniture dolly was bare. Just plain wood and carriage bolts. The one I own for general use is carpeted to prevent incidental scratches. Why wouldn't the pros use carpeted dollys, or have padding of some sort. They used to!
I noticed things seemed different from the original call to schedule the move... but I relied on past experience to rest assured everything would be fine. I was uneasy enough to call again a couple of days in advance. I was assured the crew would be on site and on time... which they were... but the phone call still had me uneasy until they actually arrived.
All this leaves me wondering if the company has changed ownership or philosophy because it does not feel like the same company I dealt with before.
I decided to do this review to get this off my chest and to share the experience as Angie's List says they want us to. 7 times before I've used this company with 120% satisfaction. #8... not so much. I doubt if there will be a #9.
Once in Columbus, things continued to go downhill. It was Jon's first week on the job. He wouldn't stop trying to socialize and the pace slowed down even more. He talked so much and worked so little. Next came the smoke breaks. Jon informs me they were taking smoke breaks but would not smoke in my parent's house. As if that was ever an option. So instead, they took their smoke breaks right behind the open truck with my furniture in it. When the move was finally over, I was charged 7 hours for a total of $796.19.
This company is so dishonest. Starting with Ottis charging me for 45 minutes for the seven mile drive from Busy Bee to my Greenwood home. I don't mind paying travel expenses, but that's excessive especially when you're paying by the hour. When I questioned Ottis, his response was "You can call Matt, but he won't do anything." He was right. Matt's crew know how to take advantage of the customers without consequence. Well, I did call Matt. He asked me why I didn't call him earlier so he could send me another crew. I guess this was my fault. Maybe it's common for him to send multiple crews, but I didn't have that much stuff. Matt informed me he's been in the business for over twenty years and knows what he's doing. I believe him. I just don't believe he knows what his crew is doing. If he did, my 800 dollar bill would have been much closer to his 450 estimate. When I brought this to his attention, Matt informed me that Ottis said I had more things than I originally told him. This is a flat out lie. I didn't have a single box extra. Not one. The dining table was even disassembled for them. Remember, that Subway break? It was never taken off my bill and Ottis seemed surprised that Jon even told me about it.
Bottom line, if you can't trust the estimate, you can't trust the company. Going from $450 to $800 is completely dishonest. I can't be more clear that the amount of items I had did not increase one box. Ultimately, Matt refunded me 80 dollars which covers the 80 tip I gave the Marlboro men. Yes, I tipped them 10% for a job poorly done. The next day, one of my parent's neighbors says to me, "I hope you weren't paying those guys by the hour. They seemed pretty worthless".
"Since the job was in Columbus, IN and we are in Indianapolis; we were not able to go out that far to give a free estimate. It was told we charge by the hour and the "MINIMUM" charge was 4 hrs. This was written and agreed upon on the contract. The move took 7 hours total. The customer did not complain and paid our employees and tipped them $40 each. Later the customer called to say that she thinks she was overcharged for her move. She stated they took breaks totaling 45 minutes which totals up $80 she wanted credited back to her credit card or she will give us a bad review on Angie's List. I apologized and told the customer I would credit her credit card the $80.00 and after that she was totally happy and thanked me for taking her word for it."
My roommate and I had everything in the living room ready to move out the door by 10 am. By noon I called to get a time estimate. The owner (who answers the phones, not part of the crew) said closer to 2:30 they are finishing a job. By 2:30 I called and he said they're running behind, closer to 3:30. By 4:00 I called he said they just got done and are grabbing some food and will be up. At 4:50 I called and he said they were picking up a 3rd guy. We were beyond disappointed as we had an event at 7:30 pm that we specifically told him about about. We also had the freight elevator blocked out from 2:30-4:00. They showed up at 6:40.
The move out was quick. They had two guys and someone in the truck covering everything, plus my roommate and I worked the entire time as well, so we had a lot of man power. Took 45 minutes to load up the entire place, down three flights of stairs.
We then went downtown, and obviously someone else had the elevator. We worked with the people moving that they would take it up, unload, send it down, we would load, take it up and unload on our floor, send it down, etc. We finished getting everything in my new apartment at 9:30.
Overall, the move was efficient. The crew was fun to talk to, and wanted to get done just as bad as us. They were very appreciative of the extra help we were supplying, as if it was just two guys, we would have gotten done well past midnight. We gave them a very hefty tip and they were extremely thankful.
However, the communication on arrival time with the owner was disappointing. I'm sure if he was part of the crew it would have been different, but he is behind a desk. The quoted price was why we went with him and was well off. I was shocked we did not get any discount either from being 6 hours late AND giving the movers two extra bodies. We did the same amount of labor they did. I'm glad it was all moved, and it got done, but I do feel cheated and extremely disappointed that there were no concessions after that. However, nothing against the actual crew, they were just doing their job and working hard and have no control of the pricing, as they called the owner to get the final price at the end. I wish I could rate the ownership and crew separate.
"I'm sorry you feel you were treated unjustly for the timing of your move but I wanted to explain a few things about the service you received. When you originally called to get rates I explained that for a 2 man crew with a truck is $89/hr on a Saturday and they charge from the time we start until the time we finish + 1 hour service charge (within Marion Co.) + $10 fuel and the 3 hour MINIMUM charge was $277.00 When you later called back to schedule the job, I only had afternoon times available. Also, when you explained that you had stairs at the load and an elevator at the unload I explained that your total cost was going to be more and had suggested that you use a 3 man crew to cut down on the overall time but you had explained that you had some help that was going to be there. I explained that afternoon times are approximate and therefore we cannot guarantee arrival times because they ultimately have to have their morning job done before we can do an afternoon job. You wanted an approximate window, in which I gave 12-2pm and then let you know that the driver or I would call that day and let you know closer to what time they would arrive. Never was "latest arrival time" said because it's an unknown. I am the owner and 95% of the time answer all the calls and schedule the appointments and it's been like that for 24 yrs now. I called the crew throughout the day to get an update on their arrival to you and relayed what they said to you throughout the day. Unfortunately their 1st job was not quite packed and ready and thus it took longer than normal. Luckily I was able to get a 3rd man at the last minute to accommodate your move and got the employees fired back up to do your job. Your total cost was $479.00 My employees appreciated the tip! Thank you! Ultimately I feel you would have felt quite different about our service had you scheduled a morning time. Morning times book up the quickest. In fact, I called on your move day, after their morning job called to see if any afternoon jobs would switch with them because they were not fully ready, but was told you needed the afternoon."
"Thank you for the kind words. I will pass it on to James and Mark. :) Thanks!"
However, this move was a very different experience.
When we called to schedule the move, one of the first questions we asked Matt, the manager, was, "Do you offer storage?" The answer we were given was, "yes" and we were told it would be 200 per month. On the day of the move at 7:30 am Matt called my husband to make sure he had scheduled the storage facility. He had not, because we were told that Busy Bee would provide the storage.
Since it was the last minute, the move being scheduled for 8:30, my husband went ahead and arranged storage at the facility Matt suggested he call- this was a 20 minute drive from my home (time for which we paid our movers their hourly rate) and $285 per month- higher than the rate of the many facilities closer to our home that we had contacted as we shopped around before scheduling our move.
Price and location of the storage facility aside, we would have chosen a different moving company entirely because offering storage was one of the amenities we were seeking from our moving company. When I spoke to Matt the following day, he claims that he told my husband they "recommend a storage facility" but do not offer storage.
The movers informed my husband during the move that they would have to charge us 20 dollars per television over 32 inches. This information was not presented to us prior to their arrival, and would certainly have been pertinent information for us to know, considering our household has several televisions over 32 inches... When I contacted Matt the next day to express my dissatisfaction he stated, "You should have known because you used us 10 years ago, and it was on the contract your husband signed." The first part of his statement is too ridiculous, and yes it was on the contract, the one that was presented on the day of the move. Not helpful.
The movers themselves were courteous. However, one of the movers told my husband it was his first day on the job- Matt denies this. However, it was evident that the other mover had to constantly direct the "new" guy, which didn't help the speed of this "paid by the hour" job. The movers were not able to get all of our stuff into the truck they used. We didn't even move any appliances. We paid them by the hour as they tried to rearrange things to get them to fit. We ended up having to move 3 SUV and 2 car loads of our own stuff to my mom's house because they couldn't fit it in the truck (to be fair, this includes the tvs we would not pay to have moved..) *When scheduling the move, my husband told Matt the square footage of the house and that it was 3 bedrooms, so the movers had the information they needed to be prepared. Matt's response to this was, "Well its the same truck we always use."
Before it was all said and done, the move took 8 hours, plus the 1.5 hours we were charged for the movers to drive from Indy to Fishers for our move (at least we were warned about this charge in advance). We spent our entire budget for the move in this first half (we will still have to pay to move from storage to our new home in a week), and we had to arrange our own storage and do some of the labor.
As I've already mentioned, I called Matt the next day to give him the run-down on our experience, and ultimately to ask him to make it right. Matt was not at all apologetic. He had an excuse or argument for each thing I reported, and basically put the blame for all of our issues on us. In the end he offered to take 5% off the second half of our move and give us a different crew. LOL. no thanks. Ultimately, his response, or lack thereof, to the series of issues we dealt with is what lead me to write this review.
"Communication is typically the root of most problems and this review is of no exception. When this move was booked it was asked if we move to storage. This is a common question in which I answered yes we move to storage. We work with many different storage providers and depending on location and if wanting climate and or non climate storage I can recommend someone. On this particular move I recommended Mill Creek Storage because they were close by and had climate controlled storage on the ground floor and are very accommodating in getting big moving trucks in and out efficiently. I doubt their prices are substantially more or less than anyone else for the same sized units or features. I had explained that the storage would ultimately have to be set up by the customer for liability and financial reasons as explained by the storage facilities. As far as the moving charges go; I've owned and operated this company for over 23 yrs and go into great detail of our charges and the same goes with our contracts. Our charges have not changed much if at all in the past 10yrs. However, I explained that in 10 yrs of time most people accumulate more and that is why their move time reflected this. [member name removed] had budgeted this move to be what she paid 10 yrs ago but that is unrealistic due to the volume difference in what she had and inflation. She asked what do we offer for a repeat customer within a month? I told her we give a 5% discount on the 2nd move and usually the second move (coming out of storage) takes less time to load out of storage than loading out of a house."
