We initially hired Mark to test our well water. After a few weeks without results of the testing he said that he didn't collect enough water and we would have to pay for him to come out again! I called him explained how that wasn't fair and he should do it over for free. I ended up working out an agreement with him to give us a discount on well cleaning. When he did show up, he was late, unprofessional, and profane, but seemed like a nice guy. He said he was short on cash and did painting on the side. He said he would paint the house for $800. I told him that I might call him back in a few weeks. The next day he called me acting desperate for work. It was a stupid decision, but I ended up giving him the work because I felt sorry for him. Because of his unprofessionalism, I didn't really trust that he would be responsible, but I didn't think he would flat out try to rip me off. But to protect myself I wrote up a contract which we discussed at length, but I didn't have him sign it because it wasn't quite finished. I was initially going to only pay him after the work was complete, but he convinced me to make a relatively small down payment to pay for supplies and to pay his assistant. To make a long story short, he ended up running away with our $250 down payment. Will not return calls. I got a hold of him on 8/8/11 by calling him on a different number. He said he had some family issues and would be out early the next morning. Never showed.
